Choose flowering plants that are indigenous or native to your area, suited to the strip’s conditions and allowed by your local council. Favor low-growing plants and groundcovers, and plan for flowers at different times of the locally appropriate season. There is no reliable one-size-fits-all species list: a nature strip is often part of the public road reserve, so council rules, pedestrian access, visibility and underground services shape what you can plant.

Which plants are good choices for bees and butterflies?

Start with your council’s recommended plant list or advice from a local indigenous-plant nursery. Look for flowering species native to your immediate region, then check their mature height and spread, water needs, exposure preferences and flowering periods against the conditions on your verge. Native status alone does not establish that a plant will benefit every local pollinator, so favor species identified locally for their flowers and suitability.

Use a varied selection rather than relying on one plant. Where local advice confirms flowering times, combine species that flower at different points in the season so the strip offers flowers over a longer period. Add low groundcovers and, where appropriate, tufted grasses for structure; Stonnington recommends indigenous and Australian native plants, flowering native or exotic plants to attract local pollinators, and tufted grasses and ground covers in its [nature strip guidance].

Brisbane City Council likewise recommends water-wise local native plants and low-growing or groundcover species, with flowering options on its [verge guidance and recommended plant list]. Its advice is specific to Brisbane; use your own council’s list if you live elsewhere.

Examples are local, not universal prescriptions

A roadside project beside the A38 in Devon, England, included yellow rattle and bird’s-foot trefoil, with seed obtained from a nearby farm to keep the plants as local as possible, according to [Highways England’s 2018 project report]. These are examples from an English roadside project, not a planting prescription for Australian conditions.

The London Borough of Richmond upon Thames identifies dandelion as an early-spring food source for pollinating insects in its [July 2026 verge guidance]. That local observation does not mean dandelions should be deliberately planted everywhere; check local advice and rules.

How to choose between candidate plants

Compare each option against the site and council requirements, not just its appeal in a seed packet or nursery pot.

  • Local fit: Is it indigenous or native to your area, and does the council approve or recommend it?
  • Flowers: Does it flower, and can local advice confirm when? Choose a mix that can provide flowers at complementary times.
  • Size: Will its mature height and spread preserve sight lines, paths and access to infrastructure?
  • Growing conditions: Is it suited to the strip’s sun, soil, exposure and water availability?
  • Upkeep and resilience: Can it cope with roadside conditions and the maintenance the site receives?
  • Safety and compatibility: Is it appropriate beside pedestrians and compatible with trees, signs, utilities and other road-reserve features?

Check local rules before planting

Nature strips and verges are commonly part of the public road reserve in the council guidance cited here. Do not assume you can plant or dig wherever you like: the rules, approved species, dimensions and approvals differ between authorities.

Authority Relevant guidance
Brisbane City Council Residential verge guidance limits plants to 700 mm high, says trees and tall shrubs must not be planted in a verge garden, and specifies a 1.8 m pedestrian strip. Residents are responsible for their verge garden; service work may disturb it without reinstatement. Council guidance.
Sunshine Coast Council Self-assessable low garden beds may be up to 50 cm at maturity, must be set back 60 cm from the road edge, and must leave a 1.8 m clear passage where there is no formed path. Designs outside the criteria need a permit. Council guidance.
City of Stonnington Its draft policy describes a permit process, an overall 90 cm height limit and additional low-planting zones. The draft requires checking underground assets through Before You Dig Australia and disallows edible planting, citing possible soil contamination in inner-metropolitan Melbourne. These conditions are specific to this draft policy and location. Council guidance.
Camden Council Directs residents to check its maintenance policy and encourages discussion with neighbours. Council guidance.

These measurements and processes are examples of local rules, not a combined standard. Check your authority’s current requirements for your address before using any dimension or planting list.

Prepare the strip safely and keep it usable

  1. Confirm the responsible authority. Check which council manages the road reserve and review its current plant list, permit or self-assessment process, and maintenance rules.
  2. Plan the layout around access. Preserve the required pedestrian route and keep driveways, corners, signs, hydrants, trees and utility access clear. Keep plants low where they could block a driver’s sight line.
  3. Locate underground services before digging. Stonnington’s draft conditions require a Before You Dig Australia check; Sunshine Coast advises residents to check utilities before planting. Follow the process specified for your location.
  4. Confirm ongoing responsibilities. Establish who maintains the planting and what may happen if utilities need repair. Brisbane warns that service work may disturb verge gardens without reinstatement.

Can less frequent mowing help pollinators?

Where local rules and road safety allow, less frequent cutting can give native plants and wildflowers time to flower and set seed. Richmond upon Thames recommends this approach in its verge guidance. The council reported about 180,000 square metres of highway grass verge in its borough in 2026; that figure describes verge area, not a measured biodiversity outcome.

Less frequent cutting may change how a verge looks, so check the council’s maintenance approach and consider discussing the plan with neighbours where appropriate. A council representative, Councillor Julia Neden-Watts, described the longer grass verges as visually different from what residents may expect while noting benefits for nature, air quality and climate resilience in the same 2026 guidance.
