Measure the installation opening at its narrowest points, then compare it with the exact appliance’s dimensions and installation instructions. Check door movement, hookups, and the full delivery route too: fitting the space in your kitchen or laundry room does not guarantee the appliance can get into the home or operate properly.
What to measure before choosing a model
- Measure the opening. Use a measuring tape to record height, width, and depth. Check width and height at more than one point, since counters, trim, baseboards, and uneven cabinets can create a narrower spot. Record the smallest usable measurement for each dimension. GE Appliances recommends measuring the narrow point and measuring twice in its appliance measuring guidance.
- Check space for movement. Note nearby walls, islands, counters, cabinets, and other fixed objects. Account for hinges and handles, then confirm that refrigerator doors, washer doors or lids, and range drawers can open far enough for everyday use. Door swing and opening width depend on the appliance and model; check the selected model’s dimensions rather than relying on a category-wide estimate.
- Check installation clearances and utilities. Compare the opening with the manufacturer’s required cutout and ventilation clearances. Locate water, drain, gas, or electrical connections as applicable, and allow room for hoses or other connections. Requirements vary by model and installation; there is no single clearance figure that applies to every refrigerator, washer, or range.
- Measure the delivery route. Record the narrowest points along the path from the delivery entrance to the installation location: doors, halls, turns, stairs, and tight passages. Include protruding handles, latches, shelves, and wall fixtures. Ask the retailer or delivery provider which appliance dimensions apply during delivery, whether packaging affects the fit, and whether door removal is possible for that specific delivery.
- Compare the exact model’s documents. Put the appliance’s overall dimensions, required clearances, door-opening space, connection locations, and route constraints side by side. GE advises checking the selected product’s specifications and installation instructions for overall dimensions, air clearance, and cutout dimensions.
How to check refrigerator fit
- Compare the refrigerator’s height, width, and depth with the narrowest points in the opening.
- Check the specified top, rear, and side clearances, and make sure doors can open without hitting a wall, island, or cabinet.
- If the model has an icemaker or water dispenser, verify its water-supply and shutoff requirements in the model’s installation instructions.
- Ask how the delivery provider measures the unit for your route. LG notes that packaging can add several centimeters to appliance dimensions; the bare refrigerator size may not be the dimension that determines whether it passes through a tight spot.
LG’s refrigerator clearance guidance says door-opening width varies by refrigerator type and points owners to model-specific requirements. Do not substitute a general refrigerator estimate for the chosen model’s instructions.

How to check washer fit
- Measure the opening and confirm the washer’s dimensions against the model’s installation instructions.
- Allow space behind the washer for water supplies, the drain, and hoses; check where the connections are located.
- For a front-loader, make sure the door has room to open and that there is usable access in front of the machine. For a top-loader, check that the lid can open without obstruction.
- Check whether the stated clearance guidance changes with the location of the water supply or other connections.
LG’s washer clearance checklist gives examples for front-loaders, including different arrangements based on water-supply position. Treat those as guidance for the cited checklist, not universal dimensions; the selected washer’s manual is the final reference.

How to check range fit
- Measure the opening’s height, width, and depth, including the space between adjacent counters or cabinets.
- Confirm the required clearance and utility setup in the instructions for the exact gas or electric range.
- Check the anti-tip bracket requirements and how the bracket is installed. Make sure the proposed placement and floor or wall conditions allow installation as instructed.
- Verify local installation requirements as well as the manufacturer’s directions; a delivery or installation service’s connection conditions are not a substitute for either.
Delivery and installation preparations can vary by company and appliance type. For example, Samsung’s US delivery guidance identifies anti-tip and utility preparation for ranges, while Whirlpool’s installation-service information describes conditions for its own service. Use these as prompts to check the selected model and installer, not as universal range dimensions or rules.

Keep delivery fit separate from installation fit
An appliance can fit its final opening but still be too wide or tall to pass through a doorway or turn in a hall. Conversely, a clear delivery route does not establish that the appliance has enough clearance once installed. Check both against the dimensions that apply to each stage.
Retailer measurement guidance also calls attention to access and delivery considerations: Lowe’s appliance measurement guide covers measuring for new appliances. For a specific purchase, confirm with the retailer or delivery provider whether the route check uses packaged or uncrated dimensions and what options exist if a doorway is tight.
