Start with the source, not the pixels. Rockstar acknowledged on August 26, 2026, that GTA VI gameplay videos had leaked, but that confirms a leak event—not that every clip circulating online is genuine or that its captions are accurate. Check the original upload, compare specific claims with Rockstar’s published material, inspect the full clip for consistency, and treat anything you cannot authenticate as unverified.
Start with Rockstar’s official baseline
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI page is the clearest public reference for material the company has released. It currently includes Trailer 1, Trailer 2 and “An Extended Look,” along with official videos, screenshots and game details. It identifies Jason and Lucia and places the story in Leonida, including Vice City. Use those sources to check concrete claims about characters, locations and released footage.

A clip posted by someone else is not official just because it uses familiar imagery or looks polished. Check whether it appears on Rockstar’s site or a channel linked from it; a repost’s title, voice-over or added captions may make claims the original material does not support. Rockstar’s page lists PlayStation 5 and presents the game for preorder, but those details do not authenticate any particular video.
What Rockstar’s leak acknowledgment confirms
On August 26, 2026, Rockstar said that GTA VI gameplay videos had leaked. Tom’s Hardware quoted the company statement: “It would be an understatement to say that having videos of Grand Theft Auto VI gameplay leak in this way has been heartbreaking for our team, and this is obviously not how we intended for you to see the game after all this time.” This is strong evidence that gameplay videos leaked. It is not an item-by-item confirmation of clips, claimed maps, mechanics, builds, watermarks or uploader stories.

That distinction matters because Axios reported on August 21, before Rockstar’s acknowledgment, that the company had not officially confirmed the purported footage then in circulation, amid debate over whether clips were genuine or GTA V edits. The later statement updates the status of the general leak event; it does not establish that every clip discussed online is authentic. A takedown notice or apparent watermark can be a clue, but neither proves that every frame is untouched, that the footage shows a final build, or that its accompanying explanation is true.
Use this workflow to assess a clip
1. Trace the earliest source
Find the earliest known upload and determine whether its uploader claims firsthand access or is reposting someone else. Prefer the original file to a cropped screen recording. Look for a coherent account of how the uploader obtained the footage, then check whether Rockstar, Take-Two or credible independent reporting has addressed that specific material. If the trail ends at an anonymous repost, call it unverified. High view counts, confident wording and “100% real” watermarks are not proof of origin.
2. Separate visible content from the caption’s claims
Write down what the video actually shows and what the poster says it proves. Is it being presented as official gameplay, a leak, a beta, a full build, a map reveal or evidence of a particular mechanic? Note any claimed date, platform, character, location or version, and check each factual assertion against Rockstar’s official page and media. A confirmed character or location that conflicts with published facts—or a supposedly final-build claim about an incompatible platform or release—is a stronger contradiction than a difference in graphics quality.

3. Compare like with like
When a clip claims to show a scene or interface comparable to official footage, compare shots with similar camera distance and lighting. Look at interface typography, minimap shape, button prompts, vehicle surfaces, animation timing and camera response. Treat differences as clues, not verdicts: development footage can use temporary UI or unfinished animation, and skilled creators can imitate a visual style. Trailers are edited presentations, so exceptional polish and visible roughness are both inconclusive on their own.
4. Inspect continuity across the full clip
Watch the longest available version and follow objects through consecutive frames. Possible warning signs include road markings, shadows or reflections changing without an apparent cause; vehicle panels, wheels or plates reshaping; interface icons drifting or changing; objects merging or appearing after being hidden; text changing between frames; and collisions whose contact, momentum or damage do not line up. Listen for voices or effects without visible causes and ambient sounds that loop conspicuously.
Any one anomaly can have an innocent explanation: compression, motion blur, interpolation, upscaling, editing, dubbing or an ordinary game bug can all affect what you see or hear. Look for multiple independent inconsistencies and keep your conclusion proportional to the evidence; a warped frame alone does not prove AI generation.

5. Treat labels and metadata as one layer of evidence
YouTube’s altered or synthetic content policy says creators must disclose realistic content that is meaningfully altered or generated with AI in specified circumstances, and YouTube may add labels. A “Made with AI” label indicates meaningful alteration or synthetic generation, but its display depends on disclosure, platform handling and available metadata. No label does not establish that footage is authentic.
YouTube’s “Captured with a camera” help page explains that some disclosures rely on supported C2PA 2.1-or-higher technology and an unbroken provenance chain. The feature appears only when creators use the relevant technology. Missing credentials therefore do not establish that a video is fake, and a credential or label does not guarantee that its caption is true. Re-encoding, screen recording and reposting can remove or interrupt useful metadata.
6. Find context before and after the viral moment
Look for the longest version and inspect what happens before and after the part being shared. A clip may be a concept scene, a modded GTA V video, footage from another game or a compilation that mixes plausible-looking material with a fabricated interface or narration. Search distinctive frames for earlier uploads and read the original creator’s description; reposts can strip a concept disclosure. A failed reverse-image search is not proof that a clip is original.

7. Do not install anything to verify a video
Assess the video as media; you do not need a game build, “unlocker,” extension or archive. Tom’s Guide reported that Kaspersky security researchers identified fake preorder pages and a purported GTA VI beta download promoted as a leak, with the download installing malware. Do not enter payment or login details on a page reached from a leak post, and do not run an executable or password-protected archive to check whether footage is real. Use Rockstar’s official site for announcements and released media.

- Official: Published by Rockstar or a clearly authorized source.
- Credibly authenticated: Supported by strong provenance, credible independent reporting or direct rights-holder evidence, but not officially released by Rockstar.
- Unverified: Plausible-looking material without enough evidence to authenticate its origin or claims.
- Demonstrably false or mislabeled: The creator identifies it as a concept, an earlier source shows it predates the claim, or clear evidence ties it to another game or a synthetic source.
If you cannot establish where a clip came from or corroborate its specific claims, say what is missing and leave it unverified. Do not turn proof that a leak happened into proof that a particular clip is genuine.
