Measure the desk area, the chair’s movement zone, and the delivery route—not just the wall. Then compare those measurements with the desk’s full footprint, usable desktop, under-desk clearance, and any height-adjustment range. This check helps catch desks that technically fit but leave no room to sit, move, or use your equipment.
1. Map the room and the route around the desk
Use a tape measure and make a quick sketch of the room. Mark the wall where the desk will go, then note the door and its swing, windows, outlets, vents, shelves, fixed furniture, and the main walking path. These details can reduce the space available even when the room’s overall dimensions seem sufficient.

Measure the usable wall length and the distance from that wall to the nearest obstacle. Measure to the obstacle—not to the opposite wall if furniture, a radiator, or another fixed object sits in between. Dell recommends accounting for doorways, baseboards, nearby furniture, and room for the chair and movement when planning a desk location (Dell’s desk-planning guidance).

Check baseboards and trim where the desk will sit. They can keep a desk from sitting flush against a wall, changing how far it projects into the room. Note outlet locations too, so the desk or equipment does not block access.

2. Measure the chair zone and walking space
The desk footprint is only part of the space you need. Pull your intended chair into position and measure the area behind it when you are seated, when you push back, and when you get in or out. Check that the chair does not obstruct a doorway or the room’s usual walking path.
Wayfair suggests 33–36 inches of chair clearance, but that is retailer guidance, not a universal ergonomic standard. Treat it as a starting point: verify the space with your actual chair and layout, including its wheels and armrests (Wayfair’s desk-size guide).

Dell gives examples of about 55–60 inches for a gaming or work workstation and 65–72 inches for setups with more equipment. Those examples are not fit rules; your measured chair zone and equipment determine what works in your room (Dell’s desk-planning guidance).

Write down the available width and depth, then compare them with the desk’s published dimensions. Include the chair and movement area outside the desk footprint rather than treating the whole measured space as desk space. If the desk has a curved front, shelves, a monitor riser, or cutouts, check the product details or drawing to determine how much flat surface remains. Advertised width and depth alone may not tell you how much usable top you get.

Check the usable surface against your equipment
Measure the largest items first: monitor(s), speakers, microphone base or arm, and any other equipment that occupies the top. Lay out where the keyboard and mouse need to go, too. Compare those footprints with the desk’s usable flat area, allowing room to position and use each item rather than merely fitting them edge to edge. Lenovo recommends considering the equipment and workflow the desk needs to support (Lenovo’s gaming-desk guidance).
OSHA’s purchasing guide advises positioning the monitor at least 20 inches from the eyes. Use that as a setup check when planning monitor placement, not as a substitute for checking the monitor’s stand or arm footprint and the available desktop (OSHA’s computer-workstation purchasing guide).

4. Check legroom below the desktop
Measure the space beneath the desk, not just the open area around it. Look for drawers, crossbars, a keyboard tray, or stored equipment that could interfere with your knees, feet, chair arms, or footrest. OSHA advises keeping the area under the work surface clear and provides seated-workstation clearance dimensions: 20 inches wide, 17 inches deep at knee level, 24 inches deep at foot level, and 4 inches high at the foot. These are minimum dimensions for one seated-posture method, not a guarantee of individual comfort (OSHA’s workstation space guidance).
5. Account for height adjustment and delivery access
For a sit-stand desk
Check the space above and behind the desk through its entire height range. A monitor, monitor arm, shelf, or cable bundle may hit a wall or overhead shelf as the desktop rises. Consider how cables move at both the lowest and highest settings, rather than checking only the desk’s resting position. Lenovo identifies rise clearance, cable movement, and room fit as relevant when choosing a standing gaming desk (Lenovo’s standing-desk guidance).

For delivery
If the desk must pass through a hallway, doorway, or stairwell, check the packaged dimensions and the access route. The assembled desk may fit the room but still be difficult to bring inside. Compare the package’s width, height, and depth with the narrowest part of the route, including turns and door clearance.
