Track the journey in stages: what search engines show, which visits you can identify in analytics, how often those visitors click affiliate links, and what the affiliate network reports afterward. No single dashboard proves that AI search caused a purchase. Google Search Console includes traffic from AI Overviews and AI Mode in its overall Web search reporting, while GA4 and affiliate-network reports cover different parts of the journey.
What you can—and cannot—measure
Use separate measures for search visibility, identifiable arrivals, on-site behavior, affiliate-link clicks, and affiliate-reported orders or commissions. Each describes a different stage. A visit identified as coming from an AI referral is evidence of an identified visit, not proof that AI search caused a later purchase. Visits whose source information is lost may not be identifiable as AI-origin traffic.

- Search exposure: Search Console impressions, clicks, queries, and pages.
- Identified arrivals: Analytics sessions attributed to a recognizable source, referrer, or campaign value.
- Affiliate engagement: Outbound affiliate-link clicks recorded on your site.
- Affiliate outcomes: Orders or commissions credited by the relevant affiliate network under its own rules.
- Unobserved influence: Visits or purchases that may have been affected by an AI answer but cannot be tied to captured source information.
What Google Search Console can tell you about AI search
Use Search Console’s Performance report to examine Google Search impressions, clicks, queries, pages, and the Web search type. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall Search Console search traffic within Web reporting. That total is not an AI-feature-only click count; the reviewed guidance does not document a separate total for clicks from those AI features. See Google’s AI Features and Your Website guidance.

Search Console is the right source for Google Search performance signals, but its clicks are not the same measure as Analytics sessions. Google explains that Search Console counts every Google Search click, while Analytics sessions follow different calculation rules. Expect totals to differ rather than treating a mismatch as automatic evidence of a tracking fault. Google’s comparison of Search Console and Analytics data recommends comparing broad trends rather than expecting exact totals.
#1 Best Overall
Identify arrival sessions in GA4
In GA4, use Traffic acquisition to review session source and medium alongside landing page, engagement, and key events. Landing-page analysis helps show which pages received identifiable visits and whether those sessions later included affiliate clicks.
Keep the scope of the metric aligned with the question. Session-scoped acquisition dimensions describe the source associated with a session; event-scoped dimensions are used to attribute credit for key events. These are not interchangeable views. Google documents the distinction in its GA4 traffic-source dimensions guidance.
Rank #2
Use UTMs only on links you control
Campaign parameters can identify traffic when you control the destination link or asset. GA4 recognizes manual traffic-source dimensions including utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign, utm_term, and utm_content. For example, a publisher could use utm_source=perplexity&utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=ai_research on a link it controls. This is a proposed naming convention, not a claim that an AI platform supplies or preserves those values. UTM tags cannot be added by the publisher to third-party search-result links the publisher does not control. See Google’s campaign URL guidance.
Measure clicks on affiliate links
Record an event when a visitor clicks an outbound affiliate link. Give the event useful dimensions—such as merchant, article, placement, or link identifier—where privacy requirements and platform policies allow. Then compare the event with the visitor’s session source and landing page. This event design is an implementation choice, not a universal schema prescribed by Google.
Rank #3
Compare your site’s measured click events with the corresponding affiliate network’s click, order, and commission reports. They describe different systems and stages, so the totals need not match. Redirects, blocked scripts, duplicate clicks, consent choices, attribution windows, and network-specific rules can all affect the comparison. Reporting fields and attribution policies vary by network; verify the relevant network’s current documentation rather than assuming a common definition.
Why some AI-origin visits appear as direct or unknown
GA4 can derive traffic source information from campaign values or document-referrer information where applicable. Google defines direct traffic as sessions for which referral-source information is unavailable or configured to be ignored. As a result, an absent AI referrer can leave some visits in direct or other reporting. Treat AI-referral sessions you can identify as a measured subset, not a complete count of all visits potentially influenced by AI search. See Google’s explanation of direct traffic.
Rank #4
For Google AI Overviews and AI Mode specifically, Search Console reports them as part of overall Web search traffic. The cited Google guidance does not establish a reliable way to separate an AI-feature click from a conventional Google result click when a Google-origin session appears in Analytics. Do not label a count inferred from query patterns as observed AI-feature clicks.

Use Search Console for Google Search performance and Analytics for behavior on your site. When comparing the reports, align the date range, landing pages, country, device, and time-zone assumptions where possible. Check tag coverage, consent, attribution settings, canonical URLs, search type, and bot filtering before interpreting differences. Google notes that the systems calculate clicks and sessions differently, so broad trends are more comparable than exact totals. See Google’s guide to using Search Console and Google Analytics data for SEO.
Best Value
For decisions about affiliate performance, compare AI-identified visits with organic search or other referral cohorts using the same landing pages, date range, device, and geography. Review visit volume, engagement, affiliate-click rate, and affiliate-reported conversion value as separate measures. A Search Console click count and an affiliate-network order count are not directly comparable: they represent different stages and attribution systems.
Quick Recap
Qualify affiliate links
Google says affiliate links are generally acceptable, and its Search Central guidance asks sites to qualify affiliate links with rel="sponsored". Apply that attribute to the affiliate link in your page markup. See Google’s guidance on qualifying outbound links.
