Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNot through Gemini Spark’s connected-folder feature unless you grant it access. Google says Spark can view and edit most Mac folders after permission is granted. But Gemini can also receive content you choose to share—such as a window, selected content, or an uploaded file—without connecting a folder.
What “Gemini on Mac” can access depends on the feature
Google’s documentation describes distinct ways to provide Gemini with Mac content. Connecting folders to Gemini Spark gives it access to those folders; sharing a window or highlighted content, or uploading a file, is a separate user-directed action. The documentation does not establish that Gemini silently scans every file on a Mac.

| Route | What you share | Can it change files? | How to stop or limit access |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gemini Spark connected folders | A folder you add through Spark’s Connected folders control. Google says Spark can view and edit most Mac folders if you grant permission, including Downloads, Desktop, Documents, and Photos. Google’s Spark for Mac help | Yes. Spark may change files by default when asked; Google warns it can permanently delete, send, or share files. | Disconnect a folder from the Connected folders list. For a one-off task, share a narrower item instead. |
| Share a window or highlighted content | A window, or highlighted content such as a document, PDF, or image, that you choose to share with the Mac app. Google’s Mac app help | The cited help describes summarizing shared content, not granting folder-wide editing access. | Share only the window or content needed for the task. |
| Manual upload on Gemini web | Local files you select using Add files, then Upload Files. Google says up to 10 supported files can be added to a prompt, subject to availability; ordinary supported files may be up to 100 MB, with separate video limits. Google’s file upload help | The upload route provides files for a prompt; the cited help does not describe access to their containing folders. | Upload only the file or files needed for the question. |
Google’s help describes Spark’s folder access as permission-gated, but does not specify the current macOS permission-dialog wording or an exact System Settings path. This distinction matters: granting access to a connected folder is broader than sharing a particular window or uploading one file.
What Spark’s folder permission allows
Google states: “If you grant permission, Gemini Spark will be able to view and edit most folders on your Mac, including downloads, files on your desktop, documents, and photos.” That is broad access to the folders you connect, not evidence of access to every file on the Mac by default. Add only folders you want Spark to work with, and disconnect any folder you added by mistake.

Can Spark delete, send, or share a file?
Yes, Spark can make changes when instructed. Google warns that it may permanently delete, send, or share files. Google says Spark is designed to ask permission before deletion or sharing, but you should still review the action, the file, and any recipient before approving it.
Google also says Spark creates temporary backup files while working with computer files. Those backups are deleted when a new query or task starts, or after 24 hours. This is a stated behavior, not a substitute for checking important files and the results of a task.

What happens to files and screens you share?
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice treats prompts and content users share—including files and screens—as information provided to Gemini. The notice says some collected data may be reviewed by people for purposes it describes, including providing and improving the service. It advises users not to enter confidential information they would not want a reviewer to see or Google to use to improve services, including machine-learning technologies. The notice is dated June 29, 2026, and the Gemini Apps Privacy Hub includes the Mac app in its scope. Google Privacy Notice · Gemini Apps Privacy Hub
How to limit what Gemini receives
- For Spark: Open Connected folders in the Mac app and connect only folders you want Spark to access. Disconnect a folder if you added it by mistake.
- For a single task: Share only the relevant window or highlighted content with the Mac app, or upload the specific file through Gemini web rather than connecting a broad folder.
- Before authorizing a change: Check what Spark proposes to change, delete, send, or share, and verify any recipient.
- For sensitive material: Avoid sharing confidential files or screen content you would not want handled under Google’s stated review and service-improvement practices.
Mac app requirements are separate from file permission
Google lists macOS Sequoia 15.0 or later, Apple Silicon, at least 8 GB of RAM, at least 200 MB of available disk space, and an internet connection as requirements for its Mac app. These determine whether the app meets Google’s published requirements; they do not tell you whether Spark has permission to access a particular folder.
