Use Google Search Console to measure visibility in Google AI Overviews, and Google Analytics to measure what visitors do after arriving on your site. Search Console’s Generative AI performance report provides impression data, not AI Overview-specific clicks or conversions. Treat the two products as complementary views—not as a direct, person-level attribution chain.
What you can measure today
Google’s Search Console documentation describes a Generative AI performance report for impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google Analytics can report Google-organic sessions and on-site outcomes such as configured leads, signups, purchases, or other key events. The official reporting guidance does not document a field that connects an individual AI Overview impression to a later visit or conversion.

Google says sites appearing in AI features are included in overall Search Console search traffic. The dedicated report adds an impression-focused view; it does not turn those impressions into a count of visits. See Google’s explanation of AI Features and your website.
Step 1: Check AI-feature visibility in Search Console
- Open the Generative AI performance report for your Search Console property, if available.
- Review impressions by page, country, date, or device. Where offered, use the Web search filters for text-based or multimodal search.
- Record the selected property, date range, dimensions, filters, and time zone alongside any exported figures.
The report may not appear for every property. Google says access is rolling out, and a property with insufficient generative AI impressions may not have access. Search Labs experiments are excluded. Search results are reported under the Web search type; keep the dedicated report’s impressions distinct from overall Search Console traffic.

Interpret report totals carefully. The chart counts at property level, so multiple results from the same site in a generative AI feature can count as one chart impression. Table aggregation depends on the selected dimension, so table and chart totals may differ. Recent data can be preliminary and change over the next few hours; standard Search performance report row and time-period limits also apply. Dates are shown in Pacific Time. These details are documented in Google’s report guidance.
Step 2: Measure visits and conversions in Analytics
Use Google Analytics to evaluate activity on your site. Google recommends Analytics for behavior such as conversions and time spent on site, while Search Console is the source for search performance. Its guidance is available in Using Search Console and Google Analytics Data for SEO.

- In the Traffic acquisition report, examine Google-organic sessions and your chosen key events or conversions.
- For page-level analysis, use a landing-page view filtered to Google organic, then compare engagement and the defined conversion event.
- State what counts as a conversion—such as a purchase, lead, or signup—and specify the acquisition scope used.
Analytics traffic-source dimensions have different scopes. User-scoped acquisition describes where new users first came from; session-scoped dimensions describe the source when a session begins; event-scoped dimensions can be used to assign credit to key events. These scopes affect how a report should be interpreted. See Google Analytics’ documentation on traffic-source dimension scopes.

They measure different things: Search Console clicks count clicks on search-result links, while Analytics sessions represent periods of interaction on the site. Google says the systems calculate these metrics differently, so exact parity is not expected. Compare trends over the same period rather than treating the totals as interchangeable.
When a gap is substantial, check the following causes identified in Google’s comparison guidance:
- Analytics tag coverage or configuration, including whether relevant pages are tracked.
- Consent choices that affect Analytics data collection.
- Differences in reporting time zones, attribution, or traffic breakdowns.
- Search Console’s canonical URL reporting compared with URLs where Analytics tracking code runs.
- Non-HTML pages that Analytics may not track, and differences in bot filtering.
How to compare the reports without overstating attribution
Compare visibility and outcomes over aligned date ranges and, where available, by page, country, and device. In Analytics, examine landing page, session source or medium, engagement, and the conversion event you have defined. This can help identify patterns and pages or segments worth investigating; it does not identify which individual visitors saw an AI Overview.

Combining Search Console and Analytics data in Looker Studio or through BigQuery exports can help explore patterns across dimensions such as country, device, and landing page. A blended dashboard is still not person-level AI Overview attribution: the products measure different stages and do not provide a documented direct impression-to-conversion join. Google describes combining the products in its Search Console and Analytics guidance.

A clear way to report the results
Use wording that names each metric and its scope separately:
Search Console reported [number] impressions for our pages in its Generative AI performance report during [date range] ([dimensions and filters]). Analytics recorded [number] Google-organic sessions and [number] [defined conversion or key event] outcomes for the corresponding pages and period. These figures measure different stages and are not a direct AI Overview attribution total.
Along with the figures, include the property, country and device filters, date window and time zone, conversion definition, Analytics attribution scope, report availability, and relevant tracking or consent caveats. Google recommends using Search Console for search performance and Analytics for behavior inside the site; its guide to optimizing for generative AI features points readers to the Generative AI performance report for measuring performance in those features.
