How to Measure Idle Motion in Robot Dataset Episodes

Idle detection depends on the motion signal and threshold you choose. Learn how episode-specific thresholds work, where they can fail, and how to interpret idle ratios.

To detect idle frames in a robot dataset, calculate how much the recorded action or state changes from one step to the next, then classify sufficiently small changes as idle. An episode-specific threshold can account for differences in motion scale and noise between episodes, but it is a design rationale—not a proven improvement over a single global threshold. The resulting idle ratio describes the chosen signal and rule, not whether the data is useless.

What does “idle” mean in a robot dataset?

Idle is an operational label: it depends on which signal you measure and how small a change must be to count as idle. It is not a universal judgment about whether a frame matters. Small action changes may indicate a pause, but can also occur while a robot intentionally holds an object or waits for a task to proceed.

Dataset resources show one practical use for the label. RoboInter-Data documents per-episode non-idle frame ranges; its example marks the beginning and ending portions outside those ranges as idle or stationary. A separate robot-data-audit package includes idle detection among its temporal-sufficiency analyses. These examples show that idle labels can support dataset inspection and filtering, but do not establish that the resources use the same detection method. RoboInter-Data · robot-data-audit 0.9.14

How can you estimate idle frames from a motion signal?

1. Choose a signal that matches the question

A practical method described by the RDA technical explainer starts with consecutive action vectors. It subtracts one action from the next and takes the L2 magnitude of that difference to produce a per-step motion measure. This measures action change; it does not necessarily measure physical movement. For example, a robot can change its command while remaining constrained, or hold position with little action change.

Before labeling data, document the signal, its units or normalization, and whether each label applies to a frame or to the transition between two frames. The RDA explainer, dated September 19, 2026, describes this implementation approach; treat its details as a secondary account rather than independently validated calibration guidance.

2. Set a threshold for each episode

With an episode-level threshold, inspect the distribution of motion values within an episode and use a boundary between low-change and higher-change observations when the distribution supports such a separation. The RDA explainer describes a bimodal-gap procedure and a median-absolute-deviation (MAD)-based fallback when that procedure does not find a suitable threshold. It does not provide independent evidence that the fallback is calibrated for every task or dataset.

Using a separate threshold per episode is defensible when episodes have different motion scales or noise floors: one fixed cutoff might be too strict for a quiet episode and too permissive for a noisier one. But an episode with no meaningful active motion, or no clear separation between low and higher motion, may not support a reliable adaptive cutoff. Record when the distribution does not support the assumed split, and specify what your implementation does in that case rather than presenting every output as equally certain.

3. Decide whether brief pauses count as idle

A threshold applied at every step can label a brief near-zero observation as idle even when it falls inside continuous task activity. A separate study of human motion in a human-robot interaction setting uses optical-flow thresholds together with a persistence condition to identify motion boundaries. That is an adjacent example of the design trade-off, not validation for robot-dataset labeling. Human Motion Understanding for Selecting Action Timing in Collaborative Human-Robot Interaction

If short pauses should not create fragmented idle labels, consider requiring low motion to persist for a defined duration before marking an idle span. Validate that duration against the task and recording rate; the available sources do not establish a universal value.

How do adaptive thresholds compare with other rules?

The following comparison describes expected trade-offs, not measured benchmark results. The sources reviewed do not establish that episode-specific thresholds outperform a global threshold.

Rule Episode-to-episode scale and noise Little or no active motion Brief pauses, spikes, and noise What it can label
One global threshold Simple to apply consistently, but a cutoff may fit some episodes poorly when scales or noise differ. May label most or all observations idle if they fall below the cutoff; task meaning still needs review. Can react to individual low or high observations unless paired with smoothing or persistence. Can label low-motion observations throughout an episode.
Per-episode adaptive threshold Can accommodate episode-specific scales or noise floors. A useful split may not exist; flag the case and document the fallback. Depends on the estimator and any additional temporal rule. Can label low-motion observations throughout an episode.
Threshold with temporal persistence Still depends on the signal and cutoff; persistence adds a duration requirement. Can identify extended low-motion periods, but does not by itself establish whether the episode is meaningful. Can suppress labels caused by very brief pauses or spikes, depending on the chosen duration and rule. Can identify sustained spans; whether it finds all spans or only trims episode boundaries depends on implementation.

Choose among these rules by checking whether their labels match the task and source recordings, not by treating complexity as proof of accuracy. Also distinguish a method that finds all idle spans from one that only trims idle prefixes or suffixes.

How should you interpret an idle ratio?

An idle ratio is the fraction of observations classified as idle under a particular signal and rule. It is a review signal, not a standalone verdict on dataset quality. A high value could warrant checking task rhythm, intentional holding or waiting, teleoperation pauses, recording boundaries, and whether the selected motion signal captures the activity that matters. The ratio alone cannot determine which explanation applies.

A September 15, 2026, user-submitted LeRobot issue reports an audit of 50 episodes and 11,939 frames from one dataset. In that tool run, the submitter reported median effective motion of 13.3%, or 86.7% of frames with minimal state change. These are not official dataset-owner statistics or a general baseline; the issue lists possible explanations rather than establishing a cause. LeRobot issue #4650

The RDA explainer separately reports a tool-run audit of 300 episodes from one named dataset, with a median idle ratio of 65.6%. This secondary, dataset-specific result is not an independently verified benchmark and should not be generalized to other tasks, platforms, or collection setups. RDA technical explainer

What should you report with idle labels?

  • The motion signal, units or normalization, and whether labels refer to frames or transitions.
  • The threshold rule, including how an episode-specific split is found and what fallback is applied.
  • Whether the method labels every low-motion span or only removes idle material at episode boundaries.
  • How brief pauses are handled, including any smoothing or persistence condition.
  • How episodes with no clear active-versus-idle separation are flagged or reviewed.
  • The task and collection context needed to interpret the resulting ratio.

These details make the label reproducible and keep a measurement of small motion changes from being mistaken for a semantic assessment of data value.
