How to Measure Google Discover Performance in Search Console

A practical guide to the Search Console Discover performance report: find the data, interpret impressions, clicks and CTR, compare periods, export results, and troubleshoot missing or mismatched numbers.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the Discover performance report in Google Search Console to measure how often your content appeared in Discover, how often people clicked it, and the resulting average click-through rate (CTR). Open Search Console, choose the correct property, and select Performance > Discover (the report may be labeled Discover performance). The report is available only when Google has enough Discover impressions for the property and normally covers the most recent 16 months. Start with impressions, clicks, and CTR, then break the data down by date, page, country, and Discover appearance type.

This guide explains what each number means, how to investigate a spike or drop, why Search Console and analytics rarely match exactly, and how to avoid drawing conclusions from suppressed rows, preliminary data, or incomplete days.

What the Discover report measures

Discover is Google’s personalized feed, surfaced in places such as the Google app and mobile browsers. Unlike ordinary Search results, a user does not have to enter a query. Google selects eligible content according to a person’s interests, so traffic is inherently less predictable than keyword-driven Search traffic. Google describes Discover as a supplemental source of visits and says that changes can be unrelated to content quality or publishing frequency.

Search Console measures Google’s recorded interaction with a Discover item for the selected property. It does not measure everything that happens after the click, and it cannot by itself prove why a story gained or lost distribution. For official coverage and availability details, see Google Search Console Help’s reporting overview and the Discover Performance report documentation.

Find the report and check whether data should exist

  1. Sign in to Google Search Console and select the domain or URL-prefix property that contains the canonical URLs you want to study.
  2. Open the left navigation and choose Performance, then Discover. Depending on the current Search Console interface, the destination may be called Discover performance.
  3. If the report is not listed, first check eligibility rather than assuming traffic was zero. Google requires a minimum amount of Discover impressions before it exposes the report, and individual table rows also have minimum thresholds. Google does not publish one universal numeric threshold.
  4. Confirm that the activity you are looking for falls within the report’s available period. Discover reporting is described as covering the last 16 months, subject to those impression thresholds.
  5. Verify the property type. A page’s metrics are assigned to its canonical URL and appear in the property that contains that canonical URL. A URL variant, subdomain, or separate URL-prefix property can therefore appear empty even when the canonical property has data.

An absent report means that Search Console has not met its display conditions for that property and period; it is not proof that no user ever saw the page in Discover.

Understand impressions, clicks, and average CTR

Enable all three headline metrics above the chart before interpreting a change. Their definitions are different from common analytics metrics:

Metric What Search Console counts How to use it What it is not
Impressions A Discover item was scrolled into view, either as a standard item or inside a carousel. It counts once per session even if the user scrolls away and back. Measure the amount of Discover exposure. Not page loads, users, or sessions on your site.
Clicks A user clicked the Discover item. Sharing or another action is not counted as a click. Measure recorded movement from the Discover surface toward the result. Not all visits, engaged sessions, or conversions.
Average CTR Clicks divided by impressions for the selected range and grouping. Compare efficiency only alongside the underlying impression and click counts. Not a separate traffic total and not a causal diagnosis.

Web Stories have additional counting rules for stories opened from an initial Discover click, so do not assume their counts behave exactly like a conventional article card. A CTR movement can result from more or fewer impressions, more or fewer clicks, or both. Always inspect the two components before deciding that a headline, image, or topic caused the change.

A repeatable workflow for measuring performance

1. Set a deliberate date range

Use the date selector to include the complete publication or event period you are investigating. A single day is useful for locating the timing of a spike or drop, but it is noisy: weekday patterns, holidays, breaking news, and feed-level interest can all move the line. For a performance comparison, use equal-length ranges and compare weekly or monthly aggregates to smooth ordinary day-to-day variation. Keep the same time-zone interpretation in both periods.

2. Establish the property-level baseline

Begin with the chart for the whole property and turn on impressions, clicks, and average CTR. Record the selected dates and whether the latest points are complete. This baseline tells you whether a page-level change is part of a site-wide movement or an isolated URL pattern. Do not call CTR a traffic count: the denominator is Discover impressions, not sessions in an analytics platform.

3. Locate affected pages

Open the Pages tab or grouping and sort or filter for the URLs associated with the event. Check the canonical URL shown by Search Console, not merely the address that was promoted in a newsletter or social post. A page can have multiple query-string, tracking, HTTP/HTTPS, or trailing-slash variants; Search Console attributes page metrics to the canonical URL, and a duplicate URL can show zero.

4. Segment by country and appearance type

Use Countries to see whether a change is concentrated in one market, and inspect the Discover appearance type when the report supplies one. A country or appearance-type shift can explain a property-level CTR change even when the page mix is unchanged. Apply filters for a specific date, page, country, or appearance type when you need a focused comparison. Keep in mind that filtering changes the visible subset and can make displayed totals differ from the unfiltered chart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Compare the chart with the table carefully

The table is capped at 1,000 rows. Low-impression rows can be omitted while still contributing to property totals, so adding every visible page will not necessarily reproduce the chart. Filters can create another difference. Treat the chart as the property-level total and the table as a thresholded, limited view of its dimensions rather than as a complete event log.

6. Check data freshness before publishing a result

Recent values can be preliminary and may change as Google finishes collection and processing. The 24-hour view is displayed in your browser’s local time and includes preliminary hourly data. Other date views use Pacific Time. For a stable report, favor complete days and note the time-zone convention in your internal comparison. Do not report a partial local day as a finished daily result.

7. Export when the comparison must be reproducible

Use the report’s export control to download chart or table data when you need a spreadsheet, a recurring review, or an external analysis. Google notes that values rendered as unavailable or non-numeric can export as zero. Preserve that caveat in your processing rules so a display limitation is not mistaken for measured zero activity. Save the date range, filters, property, and export date alongside the file.

How to compare two periods without misleading yourself

Before calculating a change, align the comparison on every axis that can alter the result:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Axis Control to apply Why it matters
Volume Compare impressions and clicks separately. A CTR percentage can look better while total clicks fall, or look worse while clicks rise.
Efficiency Calculate or read CTR with its clicks-and-impressions denominator visible. A small number of impressions can make a percentage unstable.
Time Use equal durations, complete days, and the same time-zone convention. Partial days and weekday or holiday mix can create false differences.
Content Compare the canonical URL set and account for publication timing. Duplicate URLs and newly published pages can be assigned differently than expected.
Audience and surface Check country and Discover appearance type. A distribution mix shift can change aggregate CTR without a page-level change.
Data confidence Separate preliminary points, threshold-suppressed rows, and the 1,000-row table limit. Incomplete or omitted data should not be treated as a final measurement.

For a page launch, compare a pre-publication baseline with a post-publication range of the same length. For a sudden drop, first identify the first affected complete day, then inspect pages, countries, and appearance type around that date. This sequence tells you what changed before you investigate why.

Why Search Console and analytics do not match

Search Console counts Discover interactions at Google’s surface; an analytics product generally counts visits or on-site events after a request reaches your site. Those systems have different coverage, processing, privacy, attribution, and time-zone rules. Google explains these differences in About Search Console data.

To make a comparison useful, align the date range and time zone, compare the canonical landing URL, and define the metric on each side. A Search Console click is not automatically one analytics session: redirects, blocked requests, consent choices, duplicate tracking, app behavior, browser privacy controls, and users leaving before the page loads can all intervene. Use Search Console to answer “How much Discover exposure and clicking did Google record?” and analytics to answer “What happened after a request reached the site?”

Do not force the two numbers to reconcile by adding rows that Search Console intentionally suppresses or by treating exported non-numeric values as measured zero. Investigate a persistent gap only after checking these definitions and processing boundaries.

What a Discover report can—and cannot—prove

What it can establish

  • The impressions and clicks Google reports for the selected property, date range, and dimensions.
  • The average CTR calculated from those reported clicks and impressions.
  • How reported activity is distributed across eligible pages, countries, and appearance types that meet the table’s display conditions.
  • When the change occurred relative to your selected dates, subject to preliminary-data and time-zone caveats.

What it cannot establish by itself

  • Why Google selected or stopped selecting a page.
  • Whether a headline, image, publication frequency, or technical change caused a movement.
  • What users did after clicking, including engagement, subscriptions, purchases, or revenue.
  • That a page with no visible row received zero impressions.

Google says Discover is interest-based and less predictable than query-driven Search. Shifts in user interests, content types, Search updates, or Discover product changes can coincide with a traffic movement. Treat a temporal correlation as a hypothesis to test against page, country, appearance, and technical evidence—not as proof of causation.

Use eligibility guidance as a diagnostic checklist, not a traffic formula

Google’s Discover and your website guidance says indexed content that follows Discover policies can be eligible, but “being eligible to appear in Discover is not a guarantee of appearing.” Apply the recommendations when checking a page that receives little or no distribution:

  • Write an accurate title and avoid clickbait or sensational wording.
  • Offer timely or distinctive material that is genuinely useful to the audience.
  • Use a relevant, high-quality representative image.
  • Provide a good page experience.
  • For large preview images, Google recommends an image at least 1,200 pixels wide, more than 300,000 total pixels, and a 16:9 ratio, together with max-image-preview:large or AMP where applicable.
  • Specify a representative image through supported metadata so Google can identify the intended preview.

These are Google’s recommendations, not a guaranteed ranking recipe. A technically compliant page can remain absent from Discover because eligibility is only the opportunity to be considered.

Troubleshoot common missing or surprising results

The Discover report is missing

  • Check that the selected property has met the minimum Discover-impression requirement.
  • Confirm that the suspected activity is within the 16-month reporting window.
  • Switch to the property containing the canonical URL, especially when using URL-prefix properties or separate subdomains.
  • Allow for processing time after a very recent publication; the latest data may be preliminary.

A page is absent from the Pages table

  • It may be below the row-level impression threshold, even though its impressions contribute to the property total.
  • It may be a duplicate URL whose metrics are assigned to another canonical URL.
  • The table may have reached its 1,000-row limit.
  • A filter may exclude the row from the current view.

The table total is lower than the chart

Low-impression rows, the 1,000-row cap, and active filters can all produce this result. Compare the unfiltered chart with the table’s stated scope; do not infer that the omitted difference represents tracking failure.

The latest day suddenly falls

Check whether the day is complete and whether you are viewing the 24-hour local-time display. Preliminary hourly data can change. Recheck after a complete day using the same Pacific-Time convention applied to other date views.

Clicks are high but analytics sessions are low

Verify that you are comparing the same landing URL, date range, and time zone, then account for redirects, consent and privacy controls, blocked or failed page requests, and the fact that Search Console clicks and analytics sessions are different events.

A practical investigation pattern

Suppose an editor reports that a newly published article “lost Discover traffic.” Start at the property chart and identify the first complete day of the apparent change. Compare impressions, clicks, and CTR with an equal-length prior period. Next, filter Pages to the article’s canonical URL and inspect Countries and appearance type. If the property total fell but the article is stable, the cause is probably a mix change elsewhere; if the article’s impressions fell while clicks and CTR move with them, investigate distribution rather than labeling the headline a failure. If only the latest hours differ, wait for complete data before escalating. Finally, compare any downstream analytics movement using aligned definitions. This workflow separates an observed pattern from a cause that still needs independent evidence.

Build a reporting routine that stays trustworthy

  1. Capture a weekly or monthly export with the property, date range, filters, and export timestamp.
  2. Use complete days for official comparisons; reserve daily charts for locating the timing of an event.
  3. Report impressions, clicks, and CTR together, with the denominator visible for every percentage.
  4. Keep page, country, and appearance-type cuts separate from the property headline so mix changes remain visible.
  5. Flag preliminary values, omitted low-volume rows, duplicate canonical URLs, and table truncation in the report notes.
  6. Pair Search Console interaction data with an analytics view of post-click behavior, while clearly labeling the different definitions.
  7. When recommending a content or technical change, record it as a testable hypothesis and define what independent evidence would confirm or reject it.

Following this routine gives you a defensible measurement of Discover exposure and clicks without pretending that the report explains Google’s personalization system or user behavior after the click.
