Gboard capitalization problems usually have one of four causes: Auto-capitalization is disabled, the Shift key is not applying capitals, only one app or text field is behaving differently, or Gboard needs routine maintenance. Identify which symptom you have, then work through the least disruptive fix first.
Automatic sentence capitalization and manual Shift capitalization are separate functions. Testing them independently prevents you from changing the wrong setting or erasing Gboard data unnecessarily.

First, identify what is failing
“Gboard is not typing capital letters” can describe different behaviors. Check the one that matches your screen before changing settings.
| What you see | What it usually indicates | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The first letter after a period stays lowercase, but Shift works. | Automatic sentence capitalization is disabled or being altered by the app. | Gboard Settings → Text correction → Auto-capitalization. |
| Tapping Shift and then a letter still produces lowercase text. | A manual Shift-key or Gboard software problem. | Test Shift in another text field, then restart and update Gboard. |
| Capitalization fails in only one app, form, or password field. | The field may handle input differently; the available evidence does not establish a single cause. | Type in another standard app such as Gmail or Keep. |
| Capitals stopped working after a Gboard update, or the keyboard freezes. | A software regression or damaged configuration is possible. | Restart, update, clear cache, and escalate to data reset or reinstall only if needed. |
Do not use the Auto-capitalization switch as a test for a broken Shift key. That setting controls automatic sentence starts; it does not replace tapping Shift yourself.

Before troubleshooting, make the test repeatable. Use a short sentence such as “test. next” and separately tap Shift followed by A. Note whether the key changes appearance, gives haptic or touch feedback, or changes state without changing the letter. This prevents an autocorrect change, a single mistyped key, or an unusual text field from being mistaken for a keyboard-wide failure.
Turn on automatic sentence capitalization
If Gboard fails to capitalize the first letter of a new sentence but manual capitals work, enable the setting directly in Gboard.
- Open any app with a text field.
- Tap the gear icon on the Gboard toolbar. If the toolbar is hidden, tap the four-square menu or the arrow first, then choose Settings.
- Open Text correction.
- Find Auto-capitalization and turn it on.
- Return to the text field and type a sentence, a period, a space, and another word to test the result.
Google’s Gboard Help guidance identifies Auto-capitalization as the relevant control for sentence-start behavior. Google also notes that if automatic changes are unwanted, you can turn off Smart Compose or Auto-capitalization. The setting affects automatic edits; it does not determine whether a manually tapped Shift key can produce an uppercase letter.
Test with ordinary prose rather than a field that deliberately suppresses suggestions or changes. If the first word after a period is still lowercase, toggle the setting off and on once, leave Settings, and repeat the same sentence test. Do not repeatedly change unrelated correction options: doing so makes it harder to identify which control affected the result.
Check the active language and layout
Gboard can have more than one language or layout enabled. Before calling the key defective, look at the spacebar or language indicator and confirm that the expected keyboard is active. Switch to the language you normally use, then repeat both the automatic sentence test and the manual Shift test. Record the language and layout if the failure occurs only in one of them.
This check does not prove that a language is the cause. It simply rules out testing a different layout than the one you intended and gives useful information if you later send feedback. A data reset can remove enabled languages or downloaded dictionaries, so note your current choices before using that step.
Test manual capitalization and Shift lock
To test the key itself, tap Shift once, then tap a letter. The letter should appear uppercase while the key is active. Repeat with two different letters so a single key or touch target is not mistaken for a keyboard-wide failure. Then tap another letter without Shift and check whether the keyboard returns to lowercase, as it normally should for a one-letter shift.

Some users also report that holding Shift and sliding to a letter does not capitalize it. That gesture is not established as a universal fix, so use the simple tap-Shift-then-letter test when documenting the problem. A long press that shows touch feedback but leaves the typed letter lowercase is worth recording, but it is not by itself proof of a known, widespread bug.
Check whether one app or field is the exception
Open a second text-entry app and try the same sequence: tap Shift, tap a letter, type a period and a space, then type another letter. Gmail and Keep are convenient comparison fields, but any ordinary editable text box will work.
Compare like with like. A normal message or note field is a better control than a password box, search field, form with validation, or an app that transforms text after entry. Record whether the problem affects typed text, pasted text, or both. If capitals work in the second app, the evidence points to an app- or field-specific difference, not necessarily a broken Gboard installation.

If capitals work in the second app, record the name of the affected app, the exact field (for example, a search box, comment field, or form), and whether the field is a password or other restricted input. A community report dated August 28, 2023 describes app-dependent capitalization behavior, but the available official guidance does not explain why particular apps or fields may differ. Do not conclude that Gboard is globally broken until it fails in more than one text field.
Restart the phone and update Gboard
For a manual Shift failure that occurs across apps, use Google’s low-impact sequence before resetting anything.
- Save any unfinished text.
- Restart the phone using the normal power menu.
- After the phone starts, open the Play Store, search for Gboard, and install an available update. If the listing offers Open instead of Update, no update is currently offered through that listing.
- Test capitalization again in two apps, using the same short sequence each time.
A restart clears a temporary keyboard process problem. Updating replaces the installed Gboard build when Google has published a correction or compatibility change. Neither step changes your keyboard dictionary by itself. If the problem started immediately after an update, still check for a newer update first; a later build may address the issue without requiring a reset.
Clear Gboard’s cache without resetting your settings
Google’s troubleshooting guidance recommends clearing Gboard’s cache for typing lag or incorrect key presses. It is the next step after restarting and updating because it removes temporary files while preserving your configured keyboard in normal Android implementations.
- Open Android Settings.
- Choose Apps, App management, or the equivalent label on your phone.
- Select Gboard. If it is not visible, use the app-search field or enable Show system apps.
- Open Storage or Storage & cache.
- Tap Clear cache, not Clear storage or Clear data.
- Return to a text field and repeat the manual and automatic capitalization tests.
Menu names vary by Android manufacturer, but the distinction between cache and storage matters. Clearing cache is reversible in the sense that Android recreates the temporary files; it should not be treated as a guaranteed cure for every Shift-key failure. If Android displays separate buttons for cache and storage, read the labels carefully before confirming.

Clear Gboard data only when the earlier steps fail
Google lists clearing Gboard data or storage as a deeper troubleshooting step. It resets Gboard to its default state, so use it only after testing another app, restarting, updating, and clearing the cache.
- Open Settings → Apps → Gboard → Storage (the labels may differ).
- Choose Clear storage, Clear data, or the equivalent option.
- Read the confirmation dialog and accept the reset.
- Open Gboard again, reselect it as your keyboard if Android asks, and retest capitalization.
A data reset can remove personal configuration such as keyboard preferences, enabled languages, downloaded dictionaries, and learned suggestions, depending on your Android version and synchronization settings. Make a note of your language and layout choices before resetting if you need to restore them. Save drafts in another app first, and do not assume that a reset preserves every personalized setting.
After the reset, perform a clean test before restoring optional languages or preferences. If Shift works immediately, add settings back gradually so you can identify a configuration that changes the behavior. If it still fails in multiple apps with the default setup, further resets are unlikely to add useful information.

What to do if Gboard freezes, crashes, or will not respond
Capitalization trouble accompanied by freezing or crashes requires a slightly different branch because the keyboard process itself may not be running correctly.
- Close the affected app and reopen it.
- In Android settings, open Gboard’s app-information screen and use Force stop, then reopen a text field.
- Restart the phone and check for a Gboard update.
- Clear Gboard’s cache.
- If the problem remains, consider reinstalling Gboard or uninstalling its updates, following the options available on your device.
Do not uninstall the only keyboard on the phone without a replacement. Install and enable a secondary keyboard first, verify that it opens in a text field, and then remove or roll back Gboard. Google says uninstalling updates may be useful when the problem began immediately after an update; it is a rollback test, not proof that every update is faulty.
If Gboard is disabled rather than merely unresponsive, check the device’s keyboard or on-screen keyboard settings and enable it again. If Android asks you to choose a default keyboard after a reset or reinstall, select Gboard and immediately test a normal text field. Keep the secondary keyboard available until Gboard has worked reliably through a restart.
A recently reported Shift-key failure is not an established widespread bug
A Gboard Community thread dated October 9, 2026 describes a Shift key that provided touch feedback but did not capitalize letters. The report also says that long-press caps lock and hold-and-slide capitalization failed. The community page labels its content as potentially unverified.

Document the failure and send useful feedback
When the problem persists across apps and survives maintenance, collect the information Google support needs to reproduce it:
- Phone manufacturer and model.
- Android version.
- Gboard version shown on its Play Store listing or app-information screen.
- Enabled Gboard language and keyboard layout.
- Every app and field in which Shift fails, plus one app in which it works, if any.
- Exact steps that reproduce the issue, such as “tap Shift, tap A; A appears lowercase.”
- Whether the key gives visual or haptic feedback, whether double-tap Shift changes state, and whether long-press or slide gestures behave differently.
- When the problem began and whether it followed an update, reset, or Android change.
Use Gboard’s Help & feedback option to submit those details. Avoid including passwords, private messages, or other sensitive text in screenshots or examples. A short reproduction using harmless words is enough. Mention both a failing field and a working comparison field, because that distinction can show whether the behavior is app-specific.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Common pitfalls to avoid
- Changing Auto-capitalization to fix Shift: the setting governs automatic sentence starts, not manual key input.
- Clearing storage first: data reset can remove languages, layouts, learned suggestions, and preferences. Cache is the lower-impact step.
- Testing only one app: one field may handle text differently. Always compare a second ordinary text-entry app.
- Assuming touch feedback means the key worked: record the result in the text itself; visual or haptic feedback alone does not prove that a capital was inserted.
- Repeating an unverified gesture: double-tap Shift and hold-and-slide behavior may vary by version and layout.
- Removing the only keyboard: prepare and verify a secondary keyboard before reinstalling or rolling back Gboard.
- Sharing private content in a report: use a simple test phrase and remove passwords or personal messages from screenshots.
Use this decision path
| Result of your test | Next action |
|---|---|
| Automatic sentence starts are lowercase; tapping Shift works. | Enable Auto-capitalization under Gboard Settings → Text correction. |
| Shift fails everywhere, but the keyboard otherwise works. | Restart, update Gboard, clear cache, then consider a data reset. |
| Shift fails in one app only. | Compare another text field and report the app and field details; the cause is not established by the available official guidance. |
| Gboard freezes or crashes. | Force-stop and relaunch, then follow the update, cache, and reinstall or rollback sequence. |
| The issue began immediately after an update. | Check for a newer update; if none exists, consider uninstalling updates while a secondary keyboard is available. |
| The exact failure remains after all steps. | Record device, Android, Gboard, language, app, and reproduction details and send feedback through Gboard Help & feedback. |
Frequently asked questions
Why does Gboard not capitalize the first word of a sentence?
Check Gboard Settings → Text correction → Auto-capitalization. If it is enabled and the problem occurs only in one field, compare another standard text-entry app before changing data or reinstalling.
Why does Shift not make letters uppercase?
Test Shift in at least two ordinary text fields. If it fails everywhere, restart the phone, update Gboard, clear its cache, and consider clearing data only after those steps. A community report describes a similar failure, but it is not an established universal bug or official fix.
Does double-tapping Shift turn on caps lock?
A Google community answer recommends double-tapping Shift for continuous uppercase entry. It is version- and device-dependent guidance, so treat it as a test rather than a guaranteed feature.
Will clearing Gboard’s cache erase my keyboard settings?
Cache clearing removes temporary files and is the lower-impact reset. Use the separate Clear storage or Clear data control only when needed, because that action resets Gboard and may remove personal configuration.
What if capitalization fails only in a password box?
Record that field as a separate symptom and test a normal note or message field. Restricted fields can handle input differently; the cause cannot be determined from the field alone.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Should I uninstall Gboard?
Not as a first step. Restart, update, compare apps, and clear cache first. If Gboard crashes or the issue began after an update, reinstalling or uninstalling updates may be considered, but install and verify a secondary keyboard before removing the only one.
Best Value
What information should I include in Gboard feedback?
Include the phone model, Android and Gboard versions, language and layout, affected and working apps, exact reproduction steps, key feedback behavior, and when the problem began. Exclude passwords and private text.
Bottom line
Start by separating automatic sentence capitalization from manual Shift input. Enable Auto-capitalization for the former; test Shift in another app for the latter. Then restart and update Gboard, clear its cache, and reserve a data reset or reinstall for persistent failures because those actions can remove configuration. A 2026 community report documents a similar Shift symptom but does not establish a universal bug or official fix, so unresolved cases should be documented and reported rather than treated with an unverified workaround. No accessory or replacement hardware is required for these software checks.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Gboard not capitalize the first word of a sentence?
Open Gboard Settings → Text correction and enable Auto-capitalization. If it works in one app but not another, compare a second standard text field before resetting Gboard.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy does the Shift key still type lowercase letters?

Does double-tapping Shift enable caps lock?
A Google community answer recommends it, but behavior can vary by Gboard version, Android release, language layout, and device.
Will clearing Gboard data remove my settings?
Yes. Clearing storage or data resets Gboard and may remove languages, layouts, learned suggestions, and other preferences. Cache clearing is the less disruptive option.
What should I do if Gboard fails only in one app?
Test Gmail, Keep, or another ordinary text field and record the affected app and exact field. App-specific behavior is reported, but its cause is not established.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Is there a confirmed widespread Gboard Shift bug?
A community thread dated October 9, 2026 reports a Shift failure, but it is labeled potentially unverified and does not establish a widespread bug or official workaround.
What details belong in Gboard feedback?
Provide the phone model, Android and Gboard versions, language, layout, affected and working apps, exact steps, key feedback behavior, and when the issue began. Do not include private text.
The Bottom Line
Separate automatic sentence capitalization from manual Shift input, then troubleshoot from settings and app comparison through restart, update, and cache clearing. Reserve data resets or reinstalls for persistent failures and report unresolved, repeatable symptoms with complete device details.
