To find out how much battery your ESP32 project really uses, measure current in series at the battery input with the complete device connected. To characterize the ESP32 module itself, isolate its power path from the development board. Those are different measurements: a board’s regulator, USB interface, LEDs, and other circuits can continue drawing power while the ESP32 sleeps.
Use an instrument that can capture both microamp-level sleep current and the much larger wake-up burst without disturbing the supply. A trace across several sleep/wake cycles is more useful than a single meter reading: it shows whether the problem is a high sleep floor, frequent wakeups, or long active periods.

Choose the measurement boundary first
A current reading is meaningful only when you know what is included in it. Decide whether you are answering a battery-life question about the whole product or a module-characterization question about the ESP32.
- Whole-device battery drain: Put the meter or power analyzer in series with the battery supply path and leave the actual device assembly connected. This includes the development board, regulator, USB-to-UART/JTAG circuitry, LEDs, peripherals, charger or fuel gauge, and battery circuitry that are powered in your real use.
- ESP32 module current: Isolate the module’s supply from the other board circuits. Espressif’s module-measurement setup uses ESP-ProG for flashing and a separate suitable ammeter for measurement. Do not treat an intact development board as a proxy for the module.
Espressif warns that development-board circuits may keep consuming power even after the deep_sleep example is flashed. If your aim is battery runtime, that extra current is not measurement noise: it is part of the device’s battery drain.

- Additional Tips - The following incorrect operations may cause the multimeter not to show results: Firstly, the plugs of test leads are not fully inserted or not inserted into the correct sockets. Secondly, the manual rotary switch is not placed in the correct position. In addition, this meter can not test all AC Current and below 100mV AC Voltage. Please check the user manual carefully before measurement.

Use an instrument that can follow sleep and wake
ESP32 deep sleep can be in the microamp range, while wake and active operation draw milliamps. A basic handheld meter may be unsuitable if it switches ranges too slowly or has enough internal resistance to lower the device’s supply voltage. The result can be missed wake peaks, inaccurate readings, or resets that would not occur without the meter.
Choose an instrument with microamp capability, a sufficient range for wake current, fast range transitions, low burden voltage, and waveform or logging support. Espressif names the Joulescope and Nordic Power Profiler Kit II (PPK2) as suitable options in its measurement guide. The guide says PPK2 resolution varies by range from 100 nA to 1 mA. A profiler is not essential for every project, but waveform capture helps when you need to distinguish sleep leakage from repeated active bursts.

Measure several complete sleep/wake cycles
- Record the hardware and test conditions. Note the exact ESP32 family member, module, development-board model, power input, supply voltage, connected peripherals, wake sources, retained memory or peripherals, and application. State whether the measurement includes the board and battery circuitry.
- Wire the instrument at the chosen boundary. For a battery-runtime result, place it in series with the battery supply and keep the normal assembly intact. For a module result, isolate the module supply from other board circuits. If possible, monitor voltage at the device while the instrument is inserted.
- Flash the intended firmware. For a baseline, use ESP-IDF’s
deep_sleepexample; its default wake interval is 20 seconds and can be changed in code. If reproducing Espressif’s low-current example, disable Enable touch wake up in the example configuration. - Capture multiple cycles. Record the sleep-floor current, active peak, wake duration, cycle period, and average current or energy per cycle. Serial output can confirm that the expected wake behavior occurs, but debug hardware and its power path may affect a whole-board reading.
- Compare equivalent setups. When comparing two results, match the chip or module, supply voltage, wake sources, retained domains, firmware, and measurement boundary. Label a board-level value as board-level; do not call it “the ESP32 deep-sleep current.”
A trace reveals why the minimum reading alone can mislead. Espressif’s ESP-IDF v6.1 guide documents an example waveform for an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 module with 8.14 µA during deep sleep and about 23.88 mA while active; these are figures for that documented example, not universal targets for other ESP32 variants or complete boards. Because the example wakes every 20 seconds by default, the trace can show whether frequent wakeups or long active time are dominating the cycle.

| Figure | What it describes | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| 10 µA deep-sleep consumption | Espressif’s ESP32 Series Datasheet v5.3 feature figure | Use as a family-level reference, not a guaranteed development-board measurement. Check the datasheet for the exact chip or module and its conditions. |
| 8.14 µA in deep sleep; about 23.88 mA active | Espressif’s ESP-IDF v6.1 documented ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 example waveform, accessed 2026 | Use to understand the contrast between sleep and active current in that example, not as a universal result. |
| 20 seconds between wakeups | Default interval in the cited ESP-IDF v6.1 deep_sleep example, accessed 2026 |
Confirm or change the interval in your own code before comparing cycle averages. |
The ESP32 datasheet figure and the ESP32-S3-WROOM-1 example are not interchangeable: they describe different levels of product and evidence. Neither number says what a particular battery-powered board will draw with its regulator, peripherals, and firmware.

Find the circuit that is still drawing current
If the sleep floor is high and stable, first confirm whether you are measuring the entire board or battery assembly. Then reduce the circuit systematically rather than assuming the ESP32 chip is responsible.
- Disconnect external peripherals one at a time, watching whether the sleep floor changes.
- Inspect the actual board schematic and power tree. Check regulator quiescent current, USB interface, power or status LEDs, charger or fuel gauge, sensor standby current, pull-ups, and GPIO paths. These are possible drains to investigate, not confirmed causes on every board.
- Check the exact module documentation and configured wake sources. A peripheral or wake configuration that remains enabled may change the result.
- For ESP32-WROVER-E/IE modules with the documented external GPIO12 resistor case, Espressif advises calling
rtc_gpio_isolate()before deep sleep. Do not apply this as a universal ESP32 fix: Espressif warns it can produce abnormal results on other modules.
To focus on board overhead, compare a whole-board measurement with an isolated-module measurement only when the setup and firmware allow a fair comparison. A difference points to power paths outside the isolated module, but the board schematic and component-by-component tests are needed to identify which one.

Troubleshoot the shape of the trace
Current stays high throughout the sleep interval
Confirm the measurement boundary, remove external devices one at a time, and inspect the board’s power tree. Then verify the module variant and wake configuration. On the specified ESP32-WROVER-E/IE external-resistor case, follow Espressif’s GPIO12 isolation guidance; do not generalize it to other modules.

The device resets or behaves differently with the meter connected
Suspect burden voltage or resistance in the wiring. Measure voltage at the device with the instrument in circuit, check connections, and use an instrument with lower burden voltage and enough dynamic range for the wake transition.
Your isolated-module value differs from a datasheet figure
Verify the exact chip or module, supply voltage, wake sources, retained domains, and measurement boundary. Also check whether the instrument’s low-current floor, noise, or range changes affect the reading. Published figures provide context; they are not a pass/fail guarantee for a complete product.
Report a result someone else can interpret
Include the exact chip or module and board, firmware or example configuration, supply voltage, wake interval and sources, connected peripherals, instrument, and whether the reading covers the module or the complete battery-powered assembly. Report the sleep floor alongside active peak, wake duration, and cycle-average current or energy. That makes it possible to distinguish an ESP32 module measurement from the real battery drain of a finished device.
