How to Measure ESP32-CAM Current Safely and Accurately

Put the meter in series with the ESP32-CAM supply, preserve the required voltage, and distinguish whole-board input current from an isolated module reading.

To measure ESP32-CAM current, put a suitable ammeter or power profiler in series between the supply and the board’s positive power input. Keep the board’s required supply voltage, and record whether you are measuring the complete board at its input or an isolated module rail: those readings describe different things. For sleep-to-wake and Wi-Fi activity, use an instrument with low burden voltage and fast response, because a meter that switches ranges too slowly can miss current changes or disturb the supply.

Choose what you want to measure

An ESP32-CAM current reading is meaningful only when its measurement boundary is clear. The camera board includes more than the ESP32 module: depending on the board, its regulator, flash LED and other circuitry can also draw power.

  • Complete board: Measure at the board’s normal power input with its usual peripherals attached. This tells you what that board configuration draws from its supply.
  • Module or chip: Isolate the module’s supply from the rest of the board. This is necessary when you want to characterize the module itself; an unmodified development board can continue drawing current during deep sleep.

The AI-Thinker ESP32-CAM board document specifies a 5 V input. A reading at that input is not directly comparable to current measured on the module’s 3.3 V rail. Report the voltage and measurement point with every result. Espressif’s module measurement guidance explains why board circuitry can affect sleep readings.

Measure the board’s input current

  1. Record the test setup. Note the board make and revision if known, supply voltage, measurement point, firmware or example, camera state, Wi-Fi state, flash LED state, and whether each reading is steady-state, peak or average.
  2. Turn off power before changing wiring. Break the positive supply path and connect the meter or profiler in series between the supply’s positive output and the board’s positive input. Leave ground connected normally. Do not place a current meter across the supply.
  3. Check the meter before powering up. Confirm that the leads are in the correct current jack, the fuse is intact, and the selected range can handle expected current. A wrong jack or an unsuitable range can damage the meter or interrupt power.
  4. Power the board and check its operation. If the board resets or behaves differently with the meter inserted, the meter’s burden voltage may be lowering the voltage reaching the board. Use an instrument with lower burden voltage or a suitable profiler rather than treating the disturbed reading as normal operation.
  5. Measure the states you care about separately. Capture boot, camera use, Wi-Fi transmission, flash LED off and on, and sleep as relevant to your project. Repeat with the actual firmware and workload; a published specification is context, not a substitute for your own setup.

Choose an instrument for changing current

ESP32-CAM current can change from low sleep values to much higher active values. A basic digital multimeter can help with a stable reading, but its autoranging may not react quickly enough to a sleep-to-wake transition. Its internal resistance can also cause a voltage drop that destabilizes the module. A display that updates slowly may hide short peaks during boot or radio activity.

For sleep/wake cycles or brief peaks, use a profiler that can resolve the low-current state while also capturing active current, with sufficiently fast sampling and low burden voltage. Espressif names the Joulescope and Nordic Power Profiler Kit II as examples for this kind of measurement; its ESP-IDF documentation describes the Joulescope’s high-speed sampling and dynamic range switching and says the Nordic kit covers a dynamic range typically seen in low-power embedded work. These are examples rather than the only possible instruments. Check current manufacturer documentation for supported ranges and connection requirements.

  • Lowest useful current range and whether it resolves the sleep current you need to see.
  • Maximum range and ability to capture active current or radio peaks.
  • Burden voltage at the expected current.
  • Sampling rate and automatic range-switching behavior.
  • Whether it can log or display a waveform across a sleep/wake cycle.
  • Whether it powers the device or measures current in an externally powered path.

When measuring the module instead of the board

Module characterization requires isolating the module supply so the rest of the development board does not contribute to the reading. Espressif’s documented example uses an ESP-Prog, a suitable ammeter and a computer: ESP-Prog VPROG is routed through the meter’s IN+ and OUT+ to the module’s 3V3 pin; the module’s UART TX/RX, SPI Boot, Enable and GND are connected to ESP-Prog. That arrangement is for a bare module, not an intact ESP32-CAM board. For a complete camera board, measure at its own supply boundary instead.

Flash lamp off 180 mA AI-Thinker board document; measured at 5 V

Deep sleep 6 mA AI-Thinker board document; measured at 5 V
Modem sleep 20 mA AI-Thinker board document; measured at 5 V
Light sleep 6.7 mA AI-Thinker board document; measured at 5 V

These are board-document values, not universal readings for every ESP32-CAM configuration. For contrast, Espressif’s ESP32 Series datasheet, version 5.3, gives a chip-level deep-sleep figure of 10 µA. That is not the expected 5 V input current of a complete ESP32-CAM board: the board regulator and other circuitry may dominate its reading.

Espressif’s separate measurement example reports 8.14 µA in deep sleep and about 23.88 mA active for an ESP32-S3-WROOM-1, using the procedure in ESP-IDF Programming Guide v6.1. Those measurements illustrate the method but are for a different module, not an ESP32-CAM.
