How to Measure Entanglement Between Photon Groups

Photon entanglement is inferred from repeated joint measurements—not a single detection. This guide explains tomography, entanglement witnesses and Bell tests, and how to certify genuine multipartite entanglement without overstating what the data prove.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You measure photon entanglement statistically, by repeating joint measurements on many identically prepared groups of photons. The resulting correlations are compared with a precisely chosen criterion: a reconstructed density matrix for tomography, a bound for an entanglement witness, or a Bell inequality for nonlocality. One photon, one coincidence, or one detector click cannot establish entanglement.

The correct method depends on what you want to claim, which degree of freedom carries the information, how much is known about the prepared state, and how much calibration and data the experiment can support.

What a photon-entanglement measurement actually establishes

Entanglement is a property of a joint quantum state, not of an isolated photon. An experiment therefore repeats the preparation and records outcomes from several photons in the same trial. For each trial, the relevant record might be a coincidence between detectors, a set of polarization outcomes, or outcomes from analyzers applied to different spatial modes. The analysis uses the distribution of those joint outcomes, including how it changes when local measurement settings change.

Before collecting data, write the claim in operational language. “The photons are entangled” is too broad for a multipartite experiment. A defensible claim might be that a two-photon state is nonseparable, that a three- or four-photon state is genuinely multipartite entangled, that at least a specified number of photons share genuine entanglement (entanglement depth), or that the correlations violate a particular Bell inequality. Each statement rules out a different set of alternatives and needs a different analysis.

For a finite-dimensional model, tomography estimates the joint state and permits several subsequent tests. A witness tests one selected property more economically. A Bell test asks whether the observed correlations are compatible with a specified class of local hidden-variable models. These methods overlap in their use of repeated correlations, but their conclusions are not interchangeable.

Define the photons, encoding and claim first

Identify the parties and encoded degree of freedom

Label each photon as a separate party and state what carries its logical degree of freedom. Common choices include polarization, path, time-bin, frequency and spatial mode. The local measurement settings must address the degree of freedom actually encoded. Polarization analyzers alone cannot characterize path, time-bin, frequency or spatial-mode entanglement unless those variables are included in the measurement model.

Also specify the Hilbert-space dimension assumed for each party. Treating a source as two-level when additional modes are populated can make a reconstructed state or witness value answer a different question from the one intended.

Turn the scientific goal into a testable statement

  • Bipartite entanglement: rule out separability of the two-party state.
  • Genuine multipartite entanglement: rule out every biseparable explanation, rather than merely finding entanglement in one pair.
  • Entanglement depth: establish the minimum number of particles that must participate in genuine entanglement.
  • Partition structure: determine whether entanglement is concentrated within particular subgroups.
  • Quantification: estimate a named measure, with its model and uncertainty, rather than reporting only detection.
  • Bell nonlocality: test violation of a selected Bell inequality under its stated assumptions.

This choice determines which states count as counterexamples, which measurements are necessary and how a negative result must be worded.

The three principal measurement approaches

Method Primary question What is measured Strength What a negative result means
State tomography What joint state is consistent with the data, and is it separable? Joint outcome frequencies from an informationally complete set of local settings Broad characterization; supports several later analyses The fitted state may be separable, or the data, model or sensitivity may be inadequate; uncertainty must be reported
Entanglement witness Does the state violate a bound for a selected separable or less-entangled class? Expectation value of a designed observable decomposed into local measurements Fewer settings when the target state family is known Failure to cross the witness bound does not prove separability
Bell inequality Are the correlations incompatible with the specified local hidden-variable models? Correlations for several settings and outcomes Can support a Bell-nonlocal or device-independent claim when assumptions and loopholes are addressed No violation does not prove separability or even the absence of entanglement

State tomography: reconstructing the joint state

How the measurement works

For polarization qubits, choose a set of local analyzer bases that is informationally complete for the assumed two-qubit or multiphoton model. Record the joint frequencies for every required combination of settings and outcomes. A reconstruction procedure then estimates a density matrix, usually constrained to be physical (positive semidefinite with unit trace). From that estimate, calculate a separability criterion or a named entanglement measure appropriate to the dimension and number of parties.

The same logic applies to another encoding, but the settings must span that encoding’s degrees of freedom. A polarization-only reconstruction cannot silently be interpreted as a complete state estimate when path or time-bin modes are populated.

Why tomography is data- and model-intensive

Tomography uses many settings and requires enough repeated events in each setting to estimate probabilities reliably. Detector efficiencies, analyzer alignment, dark counts, accidental coincidences, background, loss and mode leakage enter the measurement model. Calibration choices and the assumed Hilbert-space dimension affect the reconstructed matrix. Consequently, a density matrix is not an assumption-free photograph of the source.

Report the encoding, measurement operators, calibration procedure, reconstruction method, treatment of loss and background, sample sizes, and uncertainty intervals. Exact entanglement quantification is often experimentally demanding; a 2019 review in Nature Reviews Physics notes that for most quantum systems it can be extremely difficult, or sometimes impossible, to determine the amount exactly.

When tomography is the sensible choice

Use tomography when the state is not known well enough to design a narrow witness, when several properties may be relevant, or when you need a state estimate for simulation and later analyses. Its broad output does not remove the need to validate the model: an apparently entangled reconstructed state can reflect an incorrect dimension, calibration error or unaccounted background.

Entanglement witnesses: testing one property efficiently

What a witness value means

An entanglement witness is an observable whose expectation value is bounded for a defined class of separable or otherwise less-entangled states. Decompose that observable into local measurements, collect the required joint outcomes, estimate the expectation value and compare it with the bound. Under the convention used for a particular witness, a value on the entangling side of the bound certifies the property covered by that witness.

Always state the sign convention and threshold. In one convention a negative expectation certifies entanglement; another witness may use a positive violation. The numerical value has no meaning without its operator definition, bound and uncertainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Efficiency and blind spots

A witness avoids reconstructing every element of the density matrix, so it can reduce settings and data when the target state family is known. It is not a universal detector. A state can be entangled yet fall inside the nonviolating region of the chosen witness because the witness was optimized for another structure or because experimental noise reduced its sensitivity.

A strong witness violation can sometimes yield a quantitative lower bound on an entanglement measure, but only when a proven relation connects that witness to that measure under stated assumptions. Do not convert a witness value directly into “the amount of entanglement” without that relation.

Multipartite witness examples and their limits

Witnesses can be tailored to GHZ-like, W-like, graph or other state structures. A photonic experiment applied a witness to three- and four-photon states, including cases in which known Bell inequalities did not establish the desired multipartite property. This illustrates why Bell violation and genuine multipartite entanglement are different claims.

A 2018 study by Lu and co-authors described two complementary witness families for identifying entanglement partitioning and entanglement depth. Each family used two local measurements and was demonstrated on five different eight-photon entangled states. That result is a study-specific construction, not a universal two-setting prescription for arbitrary photon states.

Bell tests: a test of nonlocal correlations

A Bell experiment applies several local settings to each party and evaluates a Bell expression. Local hidden-variable models obey the selected inequality; a statistically significant violation rules out that model class under the experiment’s assumptions.

Bell nonlocality is not a general entanglement meter. Some entangled states do not violate a given Bell inequality, and a nonviolation does not establish separability. A 2007 analysis by van Enk, Lütkenhaus and Kimble explicitly distinguished protocols designed to eliminate hidden-variable models from protocols designed to verify entanglement.

A device-independent conclusion requires a careful account of assumptions and loopholes, including how trials are selected, how settings and outcomes are generated and recorded, and which detection or locality issues are addressed. If the practical goal is simply to certify a known entanglement property, a tailored witness or tomography may be better matched to the claim.

Why groups of three or more photons need a sharper conclusion

For three or more parties, finding an entangled pair is not evidence that all photons are genuinely entangled together. A state can be a mixture of components that are separable across different bipartitions while still containing entangled subgroups. Genuine multipartite entanglement requires ruling out every biseparable explanation (or the corresponding generalized separability class for more parties).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Entanglement depth gives a less absolute but often useful target: the smallest number of photons that must be genuinely entangled in the data. Partition analysis asks a related question—how the correlations can be grouped without contradicting the observations. Witnesses can be designed for these targets, while tomography can reveal unexpected partition structure when the source is not known in advance.

A practical measurement workflow

  1. Define the parties. State which optical modes represent distinct photons and how trials are identified. Make clear whether the analysis treats photons as distinguishable parties.
  2. Specify the encoding. Name the degree of freedom and its modeled dimension for each party. Include additional populated modes or justify why they are excluded.
  3. Write the exact claim. Choose bipartite nonseparability, genuine multipartite entanglement, a minimum entanglement depth, a named quantitative measure or Bell nonlocality.
  4. Select the method. Choose tomography for a broad state estimate, a witness for a defensible targeted property, or a Bell inequality for the corresponding nonlocality claim.
  5. Define settings and operators before taking data. List every local basis, outcome convention and coincidence rule. Specify the measurement model and calibration parameters rather than treating detector clicks as self-interpreting.
  6. Collect repeated joint outcomes. Use the same preparation protocol across trials and retain counts for every required setting combination. A single high-quality coincidence is still only one event.
  7. Estimate uncertainty. Propagate counting statistics and relevant calibration uncertainty to the reconstructed state, witness value or Bell expression. State the confidence procedure and any assumptions about independence or drift.
  8. Apply the criterion within scope. Compare the estimate with the separability boundary, witness bound or Bell bound that was selected in advance. Record the observed value, uncertainty and the alternatives that the test rules out.
  9. Report limitations. Identify explanations not excluded by the method, such as a different entangled state that the witness does not detect or a local model not covered by the chosen Bell assumptions.

How to interpret positive, negative and inconclusive results

A positive result

A statistically significant tomography criterion, witness violation or Bell violation supports only the proposition associated with that test. For example, a witness designed to exclude biseparable states can support genuine multipartite entanglement, while a witness aimed at a narrower state family may establish only that family’s property. State the bound, observed value, uncertainty and assumptions together.

A result inside the bound

For a witness, a value that does not cross the entangling threshold means that this witness did not certify the target property. It may reflect a separable state, an entangled state outside the witness’s sensitivity, insufficient statistics or an inaccurate measurement model. The same caution applies to a Bell expression that does not violate its inequality.

A reconstructed state that appears separable

Check whether the state model includes the encoded modes, whether calibration and background treatment are credible, and whether uncertainty overlaps entangled states. A fitted separable state is evidence within that model, not a universal proof that no form of entanglement exists in the apparatus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Common failure modes and how to prevent them

  • Confusing coincidence with entanglement: coincidence identifies correlated detections; only the full setting-dependent statistics can support an entanglement claim.
  • Using a two-party test for a multipartite claim: pairwise entanglement does not establish genuine entanglement of the whole group. Use a criterion that excludes biseparable alternatives or report the narrower pairwise result.
  • Applying a witness outside its design: verify the target state family, operator definition, bound and sign convention before interpreting its value.
  • Calling Bell nonviolation separability: a Bell inequality tests a local-hidden-variable class, not every separable and entangled state.
  • Ignoring calibration and dimension: include detector and analyzer behavior, loss or background treatment, and all modeled modes in the uncertainty and methods description.
  • Overstating quantitative precision: a detection result and an exact entanglement measure are different outputs. Use a quantitative lower bound only when its derivation and assumptions are established.
  • Relying on too few trials: finite counts can move an estimate across a threshold. Report statistical uncertainty rather than presenting a threshold crossing as exact.
  • Postselecting without disclosure: explain which trials were retained and whether the selection changes the claim or the assumptions of a Bell analysis.

What a reproducible report should contain

  • The number of photon parties, trial definition and source preparation.
  • The encoded degree of freedom, Hilbert-space dimension and any omitted modes.
  • Every local measurement setting, outcome convention and coincidence rule.
  • The tomography reconstruction algorithm, witness operator or Bell inequality used.
  • Calibration procedures, detector model, background and loss treatment.
  • Counts or probabilities for the measured settings, sample sizes and uncertainty method.
  • The observed state criterion, witness expectation or Bell expression with its bound and uncertainty.
  • The exact alternatives ruled out and those that remain possible.
  • For multipartite claims, whether biseparable states were excluded and what entanglement depth or partition was established.

This level of reporting prevents a narrow certification from being mistaken for a universal statement about the photons.

Choosing among the methods

Choose tomography when discovering or characterizing the state is worth the larger measurement burden. Choose a witness when the intended property and likely state family are sufficiently well defined to justify a targeted operator. Choose a Bell test when the scientific question is specifically nonlocality or a device-independent certification route and the experiment can defend the required assumptions. Keep “detected,” “certified,” and “quantified” separate: they describe different strengths of evidence.

The most reliable conclusion is therefore conditional and explicit: repeated joint statistics, measured with settings that cover the encoded degrees of freedom, support a stated entanglement claim only to the extent that the selected criterion and its assumptions rule out the relevant alternatives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can one unusually strong coincidence event prove that photons are entangled?

No. A coincidence is one sample from a joint distribution. Entanglement requires repeated trials and a statistical criterion evaluated across the relevant measurement settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many measurement settings are needed?

There is no universal number. Tomography needs an informationally complete set for the modeled dimension; a witness or Bell test needs the settings appearing in its operator or inequality. The required set grows with the claim and encoding.

Can polarization analyzers detect entanglement in time-bin or path?

Not by themselves. The measurement model must include the degree of freedom carrying the claimed entanglement; otherwise the result is limited to the polarization subsystem represented by the settings.

Does a Bell-inequality violation measure how much entanglement is present?

Not in general. It certifies incompatibility with the specified local hidden-variable models. Quantitative entanglement requires tomography or a separately proven relation between an observed statistic and an entanglement measure.

What is the difference between genuine multipartite entanglement and pairwise entanglement?

Pairwise evidence concerns selected photon pairs. Genuine multipartite entanglement requires excluding states that can be decomposed as mixtures separable across at least one bipartition.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can two experiments studying similar photon states use different tests?

Their claims, encodings, prior state knowledge, calibration models and acceptable data burden may differ. A tailored witness can be efficient for a known family, while tomography is preferable when the state structure is uncertain.
