Measure false positives among known-human requests or sessions, report raw counts alongside the rate, and break results down by route and action. A single accuracy score cannot show whether the rule will wrongly challenge a reader or block a customer at checkout.
What counts as a bot-detection false positive?
A false positive occurs when the detector classifies legitimate activity as automated or abusive. Its rate is the number of known-human examples wrongly flagged divided by all known-human examples in the measured cohort:

Define the unit before calculating it. A request-level rate answers how often requests were misclassified; a session- or journey-level rate better exposes how many people or tasks were affected. One person’s journey may generate many requests, so a request count alone can make customer impact look larger or smaller than it is.
#1 Best Overall
Do not count every request that escaped a challenge as human. A useful human label must come from evidence independent of the detector being tested, such as a completed legitimate journey or verified successful account access. Those signals still require judgment: describe how labels were assigned and leave ambiguous cases unknown rather than forcing them into either class.
Which metrics should you report?
Use a small set of complementary measures, with the population and denominator stated for each. Include raw numerators and denominators so readers can see the sample size behind a rate.
| Measure | What it tells you | Definition |
|---|---|---|
| False-positive rate | How often known-human traffic is incorrectly flagged | False bot classifications ÷ all known-human examples |
| Precision | How often a bot verdict is correct among the detector’s bot verdicts | True bot detections ÷ all bot detections |
| Recall | How many labeled bot attempts the detector catches | True bot detections ÷ all actual bot attempts in the labeled test population |
| Raw counts | How much evidence supports each reported rate | Show the numerator and denominator for each rate |
Keep the known-human cohort used for false-positive measurement separate from the known-bot cohort used to test detection. For bot examples, use controlled runs or recorded attack examples, and disclose how traffic was selected, the time window, and which stage of a journey it reached. A test limited to login attempts, for example, does not establish performance across all site traffic.

When bots make up only a small share of traffic, a detector can appear accurate by labeling most traffic as human while still missing bots—or can produce a meaningful number of false alarms. Accuracy also says nothing about whether an error was merely logged, triggered a challenge, or blocked an important task. AWS’s model-performance documentation defines false-positive rate for a fraud-model context as legitimate events incorrectly predicted as fraud; its confusion-matrix and ROC-curve guidance illustrates how to examine classification errors and threshold trade-offs, not bot-detection performance benchmarks.
How should you label the test traffic?
Decide in advance what counts as a successful human session, which routes are in scope, and what period you will measure. Then build labels without relying on the score or verdict under test.
- Known human: Include only examples supported by an independent signal relevant to the route, such as a completed legitimate journey or confirmed account access.
- Known bot: Use controlled bot runs or recorded attack examples, and keep their results separate from the human cohort.
- Unknown: Leave inconclusive activity unlabeled. Do not quietly treat it as human simply because it was not challenged, or as a bot because it looked unusual.
For each cohort, record the selection method, sampling window, unit of analysis, and label rules. If an event is later found to have been mislabeled, correct the cohort and recalculate rather than treating the detector’s own decision as proof.

Where can an acceptable overall rate hide bad outcomes?
Calculate performance for each important route and outcome, not just across the whole property. Login, password reset, checkout, account creation, public content, and partner APIs can have very different consequences when legitimate traffic is flagged.

For each route, record known-human sessions observed, challenged, and blocked, as well as what happened next. Track challenge completion or abandonment and, where applicable, task completion, conversion, and related support cases. A false challenge on a public article and a false block that interrupts checkout should not be treated as equivalent errors.
Also record detector version, policy threshold, enforcement action, and test period so that later results can be compared fairly. Where there is enough data, use browser and device family, mobile versus desktop, geography, network or provider, corporate proxy or VPN use, and integration client as diagnostic slices. Small slices are uncertain; show their counts and avoid treating a pattern as proof that a particular device or network caused an error.
For example, Cloudflare’s bot-score documentation says its heuristics engine assigns a score of 1 to requests with a missing or empty User-Agent, and identifies corporate proxy or Zero Trust environments that strip the header as a common false-positive trigger. In a suspected case, inspect the request path and proxy behavior before deciding that the session is malicious. The same caution applies to shared IPs, headers, and fingerprints: Cloudflare advises reviewing Bot Analytics before blocking or rate-limiting on JA3, noting that fingerprints can overlap across clients or vary with operating system. AWS describes session-specific cookies or tokens and device fingerprints as ways to distinguish activity when clients share an IP. Treat these signals as evidence to investigate, not standalone ground truth.
How do you choose a threshold and enforcement action?
Use the same labeled cohort to build a confusion matrix at each candidate threshold. A confusion matrix counts correct bot detections, missed bots, false bot classifications, and correctly identified human examples. If the detector supports it, compare true-positive rate against false-positive rate across thresholds, such as with an ROC curve.
Then evaluate the action attached to the threshold. The acceptable evidence bar should rise with the potential harm to a legitimate user:
Best Value
| Action | What it means for the test | What to measure |
|---|---|---|
| Monitor or log | The signal is recorded without changing the user’s experience. | Review flagged examples and label quality before using the signal to affect users. |
| Challenge | The user must complete an additional step to continue. | Measure challenge completion, abandonment, and downstream task outcomes for known-human traffic. |
| Hard block | The request or session is denied. | Require stronger evidence and examine route-specific false blocks because the user may have no recovery path. |
These are practical risk bands, not a universal standard or a promise that any particular rate is safe. There is no universally acceptable false-positive percentage: the right tolerance depends on the route, the cohort, the action, and the consequences of an error. Scores are also vendor-specific, not interchangeable probabilities. For example, Cloudflare documents a 1–99 bot score in which 1 indicates high confidence that a request is automated and 99 high confidence that it is human; that score is an input to policy, not a universal probability scale.

- Observe first: Run the proposed rule in a mode that logs its decisions without affecting customers. Compare flagged examples with independently labeled outcomes.
- Review errors: Investigate likely false positives, verify labels, and look for route, proxy, client, or other patterns. Keep unresolved examples unknown.
- Try a limited challenge or canary: If observation results support it, apply the action to a narrow, selected part of traffic. Define rollback criteria before the test and monitor completion, abandonment, conversions, task completion, and support impact as relevant.
- Expand cautiously: Broaden enforcement only when route-specific evidence supports the change. Reassess after a detector, threshold, or policy change because results from an earlier configuration may no longer apply.
Cloudflare’s Bot Feedback Loop lets customers report requests that Bot Management scored incorrectly; Cloudflare says it analyzes those reports to train a subsequent machine-learning model. Its documentation, last updated August 3, 2026, says the feature is available to Enterprise Bot Management customers. The workflow asks operators to filter for traffic that received an incorrect score and recommends retaining uncertain cases when the operator is unsure. This is a vendor-specific feedback facility, not a replacement for independently measuring effects on users.

- Segment decisions and user outcomes by route, session, and action.

The evidence does not establish a universally best service or a universal acceptable error rate. Compare results under the same test conditions rather than relying on a headline accuracy percentage or an uncalibrated score.
