Generative Engine Optimization: A Practical Guide to Search Citations

A practical GEO guide for developers: strengthen Search foundations, check the right crawler controls, and measure platform-specific visibility without expecting guaranteed citations.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the work of making useful, crawlable pages easier for AI-powered search experiences to find and cite. It is not a universal ranking formula, and no formatting trick guarantees a citation. For Google, the practical starting point is strong conventional SEO and original, helpful content. For ChatGPT Search, OpenAI says not to block OAI-SearchBot if you want pages considered for summaries and snippets. Perplexity’s current crawler instructions should be checked in its official documentation before you change access rules.

What GEO can—and cannot—do

GEO is a useful name for improving the chances that content is visible in generative answers. It is not a shared technical standard that makes one page eligible everywhere: Google, ChatGPT Search, and Perplexity have different systems and documented controls. A publisher can improve access and the usefulness of a page, but cannot require an answer engine to cite it.

The foundational GEO paper introduced a benchmark and reported visibility gains of up to 40% under its experimental setup. That is an upper result from the authors’ benchmark, not a typical uplift, a forecast for a live site, or a guarantee for current ChatGPT or Perplexity results. The paper describes generative systems as black boxes and notes that creators have little control over when or how their content appears. Aggarwal et al., “GEO: Generative Engine Optimization” was revised as version 3 on June 28, 2024, and accepted to KDD 2024.

How do I get cited by ChatGPT?

Make the intended public page accessible to OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says any public website can appear in ChatGPT Search and advises publishers not to block OAI-SearchBot when they want site content included in summaries and snippets. This makes crawler access a practical eligibility check—not a promise that ChatGPT will select or cite the page. OpenAI’s Publishers and Developers FAQ describes these controls.

Keep Search access separate from training choices

Do not treat OAI-SearchBot and GPTBot as interchangeable. In its publisher FAQ, OpenAI associates OAI-SearchBot with ChatGPT Search discovery and GPTBot with a publisher’s ability to disallow pages from potential training use. Decide on each purpose separately, and check all relevant access controls—not just one robots.txt rule—before assuming a page is available to Search.

Check referral traffic without mistaking it for citation coverage

OpenAI says ChatGPT referrals include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can be used in web analytics. Referral visits show traffic that reached your site through those links; they do not reveal every time a page was considered, cited, or shown without a click.

How do I get my website into Google’s generative AI features?

Google treats visibility in its generative AI features as part of Search, not as a separate optimization system with a special markup requirement. Its guidance points site owners back to conventional SEO foundations: make pages crawlable, publish original and useful material, organize it clearly, and provide a good page experience. Google says these features can use retrieval-augmented generation and query fan-out, in which related queries are generated to gather relevant information. Google Search Central’s guide was last updated July 10, 2026.

What to prioritize on the page

  • Answer a specific reader question with material that adds genuine detail, evidence, or expertise.
  • Use descriptive headings and a logical page structure so people can understand the answer and its supporting context.
  • Make important information available in the page’s main content and ensure the page is accessible to Google’s crawler.
  • Use structured data where it serves existing Search or rich-result purposes, but do not treat it as a requirement for generative AI visibility.

Google’s guidance is explicit that useful content matters more than special AI-oriented rewrites: “Creating content that people find unique, compelling, and useful will likely influence your website’s presence in generative AI search in the long run more than any of the other suggestions in this guide.”

What Google says you do not need

Google says site owners do not need llms.txt, special AI markup, tiny content chunks, or a special rewrite of pages for generative AI Search. It also advises against inauthentic mentions. These may be discussed as GEO tactics elsewhere, but Google does not require them for its generative features.

Technical compliance is not a serving guarantee. Google cautions: “Just because a page meets all requirements, best practices, and complies with the policies, doesn’t mean that Google will crawl, index, or serve its content.”

How do I optimize my site for Perplexity?

Start with useful, well-organized pages and verify the platform’s current publisher instructions before changing crawler access. Perplexity’s official Perplexity Crawlers documentation is the appropriate place to check its current rules. The documentation available here does not establish current bot names, robots.txt behavior, distinctions among crawler purposes, or reporting features, so do not apply OpenAI’s crawler guidance to Perplexity by analogy.

Should I allow AI crawlers in robots.txt?

There is no single answer for every crawler or purpose. First identify which platform and use you mean, then consult that platform’s current documentation and decide whether the relevant pages should be accessible. A rule intended to control potential training use is not necessarily the same decision as access for search discovery.

  • Google generative features: Google’s guidance points to ordinary Search crawlability and eligibility; it does not call for a special AI crawler setting.
  • ChatGPT Search: OpenAI advises publishers not to block OAI-SearchBot if they want content considered for summaries and snippets. GPTBot is a separate consideration associated in the FAQ with potential training use.
  • Perplexity: Verify its current crawler names and rules in its official documentation before editing robots.txt or other access controls.

After changing access rules, check that they match the intended policy and that important public pages remain reachable by the crawlers you chose to allow. Recheck platform guidance periodically because crawler identities and product behavior can change.

How should developers measure GEO?

Use measurements each platform actually exposes, and interpret them as partial signals rather than a complete record of citations.

Platform What a site owner can track What that signal does not establish
Google Search Console’s Generative AI performance report, as identified in Google Search Central’s guidance. It is not a cross-platform view of citations in every answer engine.
ChatGPT Search Referral visits carrying utm_source=chatgpt.com, as described in OpenAI’s FAQ. Visits do not reveal every citation or appearance that generated no click.
Perplexity Its official crawler documentation should be checked for current publisher controls. The available documentation does not establish a reporting feature or citation metric.

No cited source establishes a current cross-platform citation-rate benchmark, typical traffic lift, or conversion gain. Track indexing and organic performance alongside platform-specific signals, but do not infer total citation exposure from referral traffic alone.

A practical GEO workflow

  1. Choose a real reader question. Publish a page that resolves it with original detail and reliable sourcing rather than rewriting the same generic answer found elsewhere.
  2. Make the page usable and discoverable. Keep the main content legible, organize it with meaningful headings, and check ordinary crawl and indexing access.
  3. Apply Google’s standard Search foundations. Follow its current technical and content guidance; do not add AI-specific markup or fragment the page into micro-chunks just to target generative features.
  4. Review ChatGPT access separately. Check that OAI-SearchBot is not blocked if you want the page considered for ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. Make any GPTBot decision independently.
  5. Verify Perplexity’s current rules. Read its official crawler documentation before changing access settings for that platform.
  6. Measure what is visible. Review Google’s Search Console generative report and ChatGPT-tagged referral visits in analytics, while treating both as incomplete views of answer visibility.
  7. Revisit the controls. Check official documentation again when you review your robots.txt rules or investigate a change in discovery, since platform behavior and reporting can evolve.
