To improve Fitbit’s step-based distance estimate, measure your walking and running stride lengths separately, then enter them in the Google Health app under Profile picture or initial > Google Health settings > Activity > Stride Length. If you prefer, a GPS-tracked run can update stride length automatically, but that option depends on a usable GPS signal and the way your device records GPS.
How Fitbit estimates distance
For step-based distance estimates, Fitbit uses steps × stride length = distance traveled. The default stride-length estimate is based on your height and sex. If that estimate differs from your actual stride, the distance calculated from steps can be off. Fitbit’s formula and stride-length settings are described in the Google Health Help Center.

During a GPS activity, Fitbit uses GPS distance after it obtains a signal. Before GPS connects, it estimates distance from steps. That means your stride-length setting is most relevant to step-based estimates and the part of a GPS activity recorded before a signal is available.
Choose manual measurement or a GPS run
| Method | What you need | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Measure manually | A reliably known distance and at least 20 counted steps | You control the value directly and can set walking and running separately. |
| Let a GPS run update it | A GPS-tracked run recorded by a compatible device or phone | It can update automatically, but the result depends on GPS availability and signal quality. |
Choose manual measurement if you can use a accurately measured route and want direct control. Choose a GPS-tracked run if you can record one with GPS and are comfortable with signal-related uncertainty. You can also measure manually and later let a GPS run update the value.

Measure your stride length manually
- Find a known distance. Use a track or another route whose distance is reliably measured. A measuring tape is optional if you need to establish or check a distance.
- Count at least 20 steps. Walk or run naturally over the measured distance. Measure walking and running separately if you want values for both activities.
- Divide distance by steps. The result is your average distance per step for that trial. Convert the answer into a unit that is convenient to enter if necessary.
- Enter the value in Fitbit settings. Follow the app steps below, and save the walking or running value you measured.
For example, covering 20 meters in 25 steps gives 20 ÷ 25 = 0.8 meters per step. This is a calculation example, not a typical stride-length statistic.
Change stride length in the Google Health app
- Open the Google Health app and tap your profile picture or initial.
- Tap Google Health settings, then Activity.
- Tap Stride Length.
- Adjust Walking or Running, then save.
This is the path in the current Google Health help instructions. If your app labels differ, search its settings for “Stride Length.” The same help page documents an alternative on Fitbit.com: open Settings > Advanced Settings > Stride Length, choose a custom value, submit it, and sync your device.

Let a GPS-tracked run update stride length
Fitbit says a GPS-tracked run can update stride length automatically. For best results, it recommends running at a comfortable pace for at least 10 minutes. See Google Health Help’s Fitbit accuracy guidance.

- If you start moving before GPS connects, Fitbit estimates distance from steps until the signal is available.
- A weak or unavailable signal can affect the route and activity data, so a GPS total may be less accurate when the signal is poor, especially at the start.
- A GPS run is not a guaranteed substitute for manual measurement when you need a value you can verify directly.
Check the result
- Confirm you entered the measured value under the correct activity: walking or running.
- Make sure the value uses the unit expected by the setting; convert meters to centimeters or inches if that makes entry clearer.
- After using Fitbit.com settings, sync your device as instructed by the help page.
- When evaluating a GPS activity, account for whether GPS had connected and whether the signal remained strong.
