Choose the control that matches what looks too large: press Windows key + Minus (-) to reduce Windows Magnifier, use Ctrl + Minus (-) to zoom out on a webpage in Microsoft Edge, or adjust Windows Display settings if apps and content are consistently oversized.
First, identify what is enlarged
| What looks too large | Use this control | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| Part or all of the Windows desktop | Windows key + Minus (-) | Magnifier’s zoom level |
| A webpage in Microsoft Edge | Ctrl + Minus (-), or Ctrl + 0 to reset | The active page’s zoom |
| Apps and content across Windows | Settings > System > Display > Scale | Persistent system display sizing |
These controls affect different layers. Microsoft describes Magnifier as a tool that makes part or all of the screen larger; it is separate from webpage zoom and Windows display sizing. Microsoft’s Magnifier guide explains its views and shortcuts.

How to zoom out when the whole screen is enlarged
- Press Windows key + Minus (-) one or more times to lower Magnifier’s zoom level.
- To close Magnifier, press Windows key + Esc.
- If the shortcuts do not change the view, open Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier in Windows 11 and check whether Magnifier is on.
Magnifier can use full-screen, docked, or lens view. In lens view, the magnified area follows the pointer; docked view enlarges a portion of the screen in a fixed area. In Windows 11, Ctrl + Alt + Minus (-) toggles between the current Magnifier level and 1x. That differs from Windows key + Minus (-), which lowers the magnification level. See Microsoft’s Magnifier shortcut and view details.

How to zoom out on a webpage in Microsoft Edge
- Make the webpage the active window or tab.
- Press Ctrl + Minus (-) to reduce its zoom in 25% steps.
- Press Ctrl + 0 to restore the page’s default zoom.
You can also change zoom from Edge’s Settings and more menu. To set a default page zoom, use Edge’s Accessibility settings. These page controls do not change the Windows desktop or other apps. The shortcuts and menu options are documented in Microsoft Edge’s accessibility guidance.

Can a Dell touchpad or touchscreen zoom out?
Touchpad
On compatible Dell laptops with an ALPS touchpad, place two fingers on the touchpad and slide them closer together. Dell notes that this gesture works in applications that support zooming with Ctrl and the scroll wheel; touchpad options and application support vary. Dell’s touchpad instructions describe the gesture.
Touchscreen
On a Dell laptop with a supported touchscreen, bring two fingers closer together on the display. The gesture is application-specific, so it may not zoom out in every app. Check the laptop’s manual for its supported touch gestures; Dell’s manuals library lets you find documentation by model.

How to make Windows apps and text smaller
If Magnifier is off and content remains too large across apps, change system sizing rather than browser zoom. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Display > Scale and choose a smaller scale option. To change text without changing the size of other interface elements, open Settings > Accessibility > Text size. Windows 10 has corresponding controls under Display and Ease of Access. Microsoft’s Windows text-size guidance explains the text setting.

If zooming out does not work

- The pointer area or desktop is magnified: Check Settings > Accessibility > Magnifier; a lens or docked view can make only part of the screen look enlarged.
- Everything in Windows is oversized: Review Display Scale and Text size, since these are separate from Magnifier and browser zoom.
- A pinch gesture has no effect: The touchpad model or app may not support it. Use the relevant keyboard shortcut or Windows setting instead.
