Set FFmpeg’s output dimensions to the resolution you want YouTube Live to ingest; preserve the source aspect ratio unless you deliberately want to crop or pad it. Resolution is only one part of the encoder setup: choose a frame rate and bitrate that fit the content and your upload capacity, then test the complete stream before going live.
Choose the resolution YouTube should ingest
YouTube detects encoder settings automatically by default. If you use a custom stream key and enable manual settings in Live Control Room, you can select the stream resolution there. In either case, configure FFmpeg to send dimensions that match the intended ingest target. YouTube transcodes the incoming live stream into multiple viewer formats; you generally configure the ingest feed, not a separate FFmpeg output for every viewer rendition.

Choose a target based on the detail and motion in your source, the frame rate you need, and the upload capacity available to the encoder. A higher resolution or frame rate is not automatically better if the connection cannot sustain its bitrate.
Match FFmpeg dimensions without distorting the picture
FFmpeg’s scale filter can set one dimension and calculate the other proportionally. For example, scale=1280:-2 targets a width of 1280 pixels and calculates a compatible height. The negative multiple lets FFmpeg keep dimensions compatible with common encoder requirements while preserving the source proportions.

This is a filter fragment, not a complete streaming command. The full command depends on the input, installed FFmpeg build, encoder, stream URL and credentials, and how audio is handled. Check the actual output dimensions with your installed FFmpeg and test before the event.
When the source and target aspect ratios differ
Decide how to handle the shape difference rather than stretching the image. You can fit the whole source within a target box, add padding to fill the remaining area, or crop part of the source. FFmpeg documents force_original_aspect_ratio for keeping output within or beyond specified width and height bounds. Which approach is right depends on whether preserving all the picture or filling the frame matters more.

Set frame rate, codec, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1; supports frame rates up to 60 fps; recommends constant bitrate (CBR); and recommends a two-second keyframe frequency that should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build actually provides the encoder and options you intend to use.
For H.264, YouTube Help’s current encoder-settings page, accessed October 3, 2026, gives these ingest bitrate values. They are recommendations, not guarantees of stable delivery on a particular connection.

| Ingest target | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These figures apply to the listed H.264 ingest resolutions and frame rates. Check YouTube’s current live encoder settings for the applicable guidance, and check that your upload connection has enough capacity to sustain the chosen stream reliably.
YouTube’s other recommendations include square pixel aspect ratio, progressive scan, CABAC, two B-frames, Rec. 709 for SDR, and AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. Treat these as parts of a complete encoder configuration, not substitutes for matching the output dimensions.

Configure and test the stream in order
- Pick the ingest target. Select resolution and frame rate based on source detail and motion, then check the corresponding bitrate guidance and your available upload capacity.
- Choose YouTube’s detection mode. Leave encoder settings on automatic detection, or use a custom stream key and enable manual settings in Live Control Room if you need to select the ingest resolution yourself. Consult YouTube’s stream setup guidance for the current interface and setup details.
- Resize proportionally. Apply FFmpeg’s
scalefilter to produce the intended frame dimensions. If the source and target shapes differ, deliberately choose fit, padding, or crop. - Complete the encoder settings. Use a supported codec, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not above four seconds under YouTube’s recommendation), and a bitrate suitable for the target and connection.
- Test a representative stream. Use similar audio and movement to the actual programme. Confirm the output dimensions and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages during the test and the live delivery.
Do not treat -vf "scale=1280:-2" as a universal command to go live: it only illustrates the resizing filter. Protocol, credentials, encoder availability, input handling, and audio settings must be correct for your particular setup.

- The picture looks stretched. The output dimensions may not preserve the source aspect ratio. Use proportional scaling and choose padding or cropping when the target shape differs.
- The stream is unstable at the chosen resolution. Check whether upload capacity can sustain the bitrate for that resolution and frame rate. Test a lower target or frame rate if the connection cannot reliably carry the selected rate.
- The selected resolution is not available as expected. Check whether Live Control Room is using automatic detection or manual settings with a custom stream key, and verify that FFmpeg is sending the dimensions you intend.
- FFmpeg rejects the encoder or an option. Encoder availability depends on the installed FFmpeg build. Verify the build’s supported encoders and options rather than assuming every documented codec is available locally.
- YouTube reports stream-health problems. Review its messages, verify the full encoder configuration, and repeat a test using audio and motion similar to the real stream.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuous YouTube channel using uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live.
