In Playwright, pass a locator for the volatile element in the screenshot’s mask option. Playwright overlays the element’s bounding box with a solid color before the screenshot is compared, so changes inside that box do not create visual diffs. Keep the locator tight: anything inside the masked box—including a genuine regression—is hidden from that comparison.
Mask a changing region with Playwright
Use mask on the screenshot assertion that performs the visual comparison. A stable test attribute is usually less fragile than a positional selector:

Playwright covers the matched element’s bounding box with a solid overlay. The default color is pink (#FF00FF); set maskColor to change it:

});The overlay makes the changing area visually consistent for comparison, but it also conceals everything in the covered box. If a timestamp container is larger than the text, the whole container is masked, including any layout, styling, or content regression there.
Choose what to mask—and what not to
Use a narrow, stable locator
Prefer a dedicated attribute such as data-testid or a reliable semantic locator. Avoid selectors that depend on element order or styling details likely to change. Mask only the smallest element that contains the nondeterministic pixels.

Prefer deterministic test data when possible
If you can freeze a clock, mock an API response, or otherwise control the test state, do that instead of masking. Deterministic content remains visible to visual testing, so changes to its typography, spacing, or layout can still be caught. Masking is appropriate when a region genuinely must vary and its visual content is not the subject of the assertion.
Review the actual captured image
Inspect both the screenshot and the diff after adding a mask. Confirm that the overlay covers only the intended region and does not overlap nearby content. A broad or misplaced bounding box can make the comparison pass while hiding a meaningful change.

Keep baselines and rendering conditions consistent
Playwright Test creates a reference screenshot on the first run of toHaveScreenshot() and compares later captures against that reference. See Playwright’s visual comparisons guide.
Screenshot output can vary with operating system, browser version, settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode. Playwright recommends using the same environment for baseline creation and comparison. A changed rendering environment can produce diffs even when the page code has not changed.

- Keep the browser and operating-system environment aligned with the one that generated the baseline.
- Use a consistent viewport and test state so layout and content are comparable.
- When a diff appears, inspect it before refreshing the baseline. Updating a reference records the new image; it does not prove the page is correct.
Other visual-testing tools use different region controls
The region-selection method is not identical across tools. Percy’s Playwright integration documents ignore regions selected by selectors, XPath, or custom coordinates. Applitools documents capturing a specific region and ignoring regions in visual testing. Those descriptions establish available controls, not that their behavior is equivalent to Playwright’s capture-time bounding-box overlay.

Troubleshoot masks and unexpected diffs
The changing area still produces a diff
Confirm that the locator matches the intended element at screenshot time and that it is included in the mask array passed to the screenshot assertion. Check the saved screenshot to see whether the overlay appeared where expected.

The mask hides too much
The mask covers the matched element’s full bounding box, not only pixels that changed. Target a smaller child element or revise the test markup to expose a stable, narrowly scoped test attribute. Then inspect the new output for overlap.
The screenshot differs outside the mask
Check whether the baseline and current run use the same rendering environment, viewport, browser settings, and test data. Playwright documents several environmental factors that can affect screenshot output; align the baseline and comparison runs before treating every pixel difference as a page regression.
A baseline update makes the test pass, but the page may be wrong
Review the diff and the page behavior first. Accept a new reference only when the visual change is intended. A baseline update alone is not validation.
