How to Manually Bring Up the Keyboard on Android (and Fix It When It Won’t Appear)

Tap a text field and the Android keyboard should appear. If it doesn't, here are the fixes for a missing keyboard app, a glitchy Gboard, and tablets with physical keyboards.

Tap a text field in an app that accepts typing, and the on-screen keyboard should appear. Google’s Gboard help puts it in one line: “Tap where you can enter text.” If nothing appears, the cause is almost always one of four things: no active text field, no keyboard app set up, a misbehaving Gboard, or a physical keyboard connected to a tablet.

The basic method: tap a text field

  1. Open an app with somewhere to type, such as messaging, notes, email, or a browser’s search bar.
  2. Tap inside the text field, such as the message box or the address bar.
  3. The on-screen keyboard should slide up from the bottom of the screen.

The keyboard belongs to the text field, not to the system. There is no universal “keyboard” button on the home screen or in the Quick Settings panel. If you are on a screen with nothing to type into, such as a home screen or a photo gallery, no keyboard will show. Open an app that accepts text first.

Check that a keyboard app is installed

Gboard may already be the default keyboard on some Android devices. If your device has no working on-screen keyboard, Google documents how to install Gboard and set its options in its “Set up Gboard” help page. Install it from the Play Store, then enable it when Android prompts you, and tap a text field again.

Fix Gboard problems

If Gboard is installed but crashes, freezes, or doesn’t respond, follow Google’s order from the “Fix problems with Gboard” page. Try the simpler steps first.

  1. Restart the device. This clears many temporary glitches.
  2. Update Gboard. Install any pending update from the Play Store.
  3. Clear the cache. Open Gboard’s app info and clear its cache. This doesn’t reset your settings.
  4. Force stop Gboard and reopen it. Then tap a text field again.
  5. Clear data, if needed. This resets Gboard to its default state, so your custom settings are lost.
  6. Reinstall Gboard. If Gboard is your only keyboard app, Google says to install a secondary keyboard before removing it, so you aren’t left without one.

Tablet with a physical keyboard

Android treats a connected hardware keyboard as the main input method, so the on-screen one can stay hidden. Google’s physical-keyboard help describes a setting for this. Its wording: “Use on-screen keyboard: Turn this on if you want to keep your virtual keyboard on the tablet’s screen when the physical keyboard is active.”

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Go to System → Keyboard → Physical keyboard.
  3. Turn on Use on-screen keyboard.

Google notes that some physical-keyboard steps work only on Android 14 and up. Alternatively, disconnect or switch off the hardware keyboard, and the on-screen one should return when you tap a field. Buying a keyboard is never a fix for a missing virtual one. It only adds a second way to type.

If your menus look different

Settings layouts vary by Android version and manufacturer. Google’s Gboard guidance warns that custom Android versions may require checking with the device maker. If System → Keyboard isn’t where you expect, open Settings, use the search bar, and type “keyboard”. Don’t assume one path works on every phone or tablet.
