How to Manage Xbox Storage Before Installing a Large Game

Free space before installing a large Xbox game by removing titles you no longer need, or compare USB storage with the Series X|S Storage Expansion Card.

Before buying extra storage, free space by uninstalling games and apps you no longer use. If you want to keep your library, a USB external drive can hold games and free room on the console; for added storage that Xbox says matches the custom SSD’s performance on Series X|S, consider its dedicated Storage Expansion Card.

Start by removing games and apps you no longer need

Uninstalling a game removes its installed files from the console and is the quickest no-purchase option when you are ready to make room. Xbox lists uninstalling games among its recommended ways to gain storage space. Review installed games and apps, then remove items you are unlikely to play soon. Check the current storage-management controls on your console for the exact menu labels; Xbox Support’s Manage storage page is the relevant official guide.

Choose added storage based on where you want to play

Extra capacity and a place to launch every game are not always the same thing. Decide whether you mainly need an archive for games you want to keep, or additional storage from which you can play without moving them.

Option Best fit What to consider
Uninstall unused games or apps Make room without buying hardware. You will need to reinstall a removed game before playing it again.
USB external drive Keep games on hand and free console SSD space. Some games may need to be moved to internal storage or an expansion card to play. Check the behavior of each title on your console.
Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card Add game storage with the performance Xbox describes as matching its custom SSD. It connects through the console’s expansion port. Check current prices and availability before buying.

Use a USB drive to keep games without filling the console

A USB external drive can store games and help free the console’s internal SSD. That makes it useful if you want to keep a game installed in your library but do not need to launch it directly from the external drive. Playability depends on the specific game and current console behavior, so check the title rather than assuming every game can launch from USB.

Xbox Wire’s guidance distinguishes storing games from playing them: it points to internal storage or the expansion card for improved load times and specifically notes that Xbox One and earlier titles can be played from an external USB drive. Its November 6, 2020 article also described plugging an existing USB 3.1 drive into Series X|S, but that is an older statement; verify current device compatibility before relying on a particular drive.

Choose the expansion card for console-speed added storage

Xbox describes the dedicated Series X|S Storage Expansion Card as added game storage with the same performance as the console’s custom SSD. It connects through the expansion port and is the direct choice when you want more storage designed to provide that performance, rather than using USB storage primarily as a place to keep games.

How much built-in storage does an Xbox have?

Xbox lists Series X|S consoles with either a 512 GB or 1 TB internal drive. Those are advertised drive configurations, not a guarantee that the full amount is available for game installs. Check the available space shown on your own console before deciding whether cleanup or added storage will be enough.
