How to manage VS Code extensions across multiple projects

A practical guide to separating VS Code extensions by project, sharing recommendations with teammates, synchronizing personal setups, and handling remote workspaces.

Use VS Code Profiles when projects need different extension sets, settings, or interface layouts. Use workspace-specific enablement for a one-off exception, workspace recommendations for a team-shared list, and Settings Sync to carry your personal setup between computers. These features solve different problems and should be combined deliberately rather than treated as interchangeable.

Choose the mechanism that matches the problem

VS Code has four separate controls for extension management. The right choice depends on whether the configuration belongs to a project, to you personally, or to a team; whether you need to install extensions or merely switch them on; and whether the window is local or remote.

Need Use What it stores or changes Important limitation
Separate extension sets, settings, and UI for different projects or stacks Profiles A named collection of extensions, settings, and interface customizations. VS Code can remember the selected profile for each workspace. Profile synchronization is a separately selected Settings Sync category, and extensions are not synchronized into remote windows.
Turn one installed extension off for one project Workspace-specific enablement Changes whether that extension is enabled in the current workspace. It is a local setting, not a team-shared instruction and not an installation list.
Tell collaborators which tools are useful for a repository Workspace recommendations Stores extension IDs in the project so VS Code can prompt users to install them. Recommendations are invitations. They do not force installation and do not automatically enable or disable an extension.
Reproduce your personal setup on another computer Settings Sync Can synchronize installed extensions, global enablement state, settings, keybindings, snippets, and selected profiles. Sync is tied to your account and selected categories; remote windows have their own extension installation context.
Install, remove, or inspect extensions in a named profile from scripts Command-line options with --profile Targets profile-specific extension operations such as install, uninstall, and list. Requires a local command-line workflow and correct profile naming.

A useful rule is: profiles organize complete personal environments, workspace enablement handles exceptions, recommendations communicate with teammates, and Settings Sync transports personal state between machines.

Set up profiles for genuinely different stacks

A profile is the best fit when a frontend, backend, documentation, or data project needs a different working environment. For example, a JavaScript frontend profile can contain its preferred formatters and language tools, while a Python backend profile contains Python analysis and testing tools. Each profile can also have different editor settings, themes, views, and other interface choices.

Create a profile in the interface

  1. Open the Profiles interface from the Activity Bar or the Manage menu.
  2. Choose Create Profile.
  3. Give the profile a descriptive name such as Frontend, Python backend, or Docs. Names should describe a workflow rather than a temporary ticket.
  4. Choose whether to start with an empty profile or copy an existing profile. An empty profile is useful when you want to avoid carrying unrelated extensions into a specialized project.
  5. With the new profile active, open Extensions and install the tools needed for that stack. Configure profile-specific settings through Settings; those settings are stored with the profile rather than mixed into another profile.
  6. Open the target folder or workspace and select the profile from the Profiles interface. Reopen that workspace later and VS Code can restore the profile associated with it.

Keep the profile boundary meaningful. A profile that contains every extension you use is little different from the default environment. Conversely, splitting every small variation into a new profile creates maintenance work. Make a profile when the language stack, debugging workflow, or project policy is materially different.

Switch profiles without moving files

Changing profiles does not relocate a project or alter its source code. It changes the active collection of extensions, settings, and UI customizations for the current VS Code window. Use the Profiles interface to switch while the workspace is open, then verify the active profile name before diagnosing an extension as missing.

For repeatable launches, open a folder with a named profile from a terminal:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
code <folder> --profile "Profile Name"

Replace <folder> with a path and Profile Name with the exact profile name. This is useful for shell aliases, project launch scripts, or separate desktop shortcuts for distinct stacks.

Profile behavior in multi-root workspaces

A multi-root workspace contains several folders in one window. The profile applies to the window and therefore provides a consistent personal environment across all roots. Repository-specific recommendations can still be declared in the workspace file or in individual folders, so do not use a profile as a substitute for communicating project requirements.

Disable one extension for one workspace

If the rest of your profile is correct and only one extension causes a conflict, use workspace-specific enablement instead of creating another profile.

  1. Open the Extensions view.
  2. Find the installed extension and open its Manage menu using the gear icon.
  3. Choose Disable (Workspace). The extension remains installed and available elsewhere, but it is disabled for the current workspace.
  4. To reverse the change, open the same menu and choose Enable (Workspace).

This option is useful for cases such as a repository that supplies its own formatter, a legacy project that cannot tolerate a language service, or a test workspace where an extension interferes with debugging. The choice belongs to your local workspace configuration. It does not tell a collaborator to disable the extension and it does not add or remove anything from the repository.

Publish team guidance with workspace recommendations

Recommendations answer a different question: “Which extensions should people consider for this repository?” They are appropriate when a team wants a common toolset but must allow developers to decide what to install.

Single-folder workspace

Create or edit .vscode/extensions.json in the repository. A minimal file has a recommendations array containing extension identifiers:

{
  "recommendations": [
    "publisher.extension-id",
    "another-publisher.another-extension"
  ]
}

Use the exact identifier shown in an extension’s details page or in the Extensions view. Commit this file so everyone opening the repository receives the same recommendation list.

Multi-root workspace

Recommendations can be listed in the .code-workspace file through the extensions.recommendations setting:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
{
  "folders": [
    { "path": "frontend" },
    { "path": "backend" }
  ],
  "extensions": {
    "recommendations": [
      "publisher.frontend-tool",
      "publisher.backend-tool"
    ]
  }
}

Individual folders can also retain their own .vscode/extensions.json files. This lets a shared workspace advertise tools for the whole window while a particular root adds a narrower recommendation.

What recommendations do not do

  • They do not silently install extensions.
  • They do not force a user to accept the recommendation prompt.
  • They do not enable an extension that is installed but disabled for the workspace.
  • They do not transfer your personal settings, keybindings, or profile.

Use recommendations for collaboration and onboarding, not for enforcement. If a build or policy truly requires a tool, document the requirement separately and provide a supported command or setup process.

Synchronize your setup between computers

Settings Sync is for carrying selected personal configuration to another installation of VS Code. Turn it on from the Manage menu by selecting Settings Sync and then Turn on Settings Sync. Sign in when prompted and choose the categories you want to synchronize.

Understand the Extensions category

The Extensions category includes installed extensions and their global enablement state. That is different from a workspace-specific disablement: a global state can affect every workspace, while a workspace exception remains local to that workspace. Profiles can also be synchronized, but profile synchronization is a separate category that must be selected.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you want a clean machine to receive the same personal extension inventory, enable the Extensions category. When you want named profiles and their associated configuration to appear there as well, select the Profiles category too. Review the category list before enabling sync; transferring every category is not required.

Exclude an extension from synchronization

If one extension should remain local, exclude it through the extension’s actions in the Extensions view or add its identifier to the settingsSync.ignoredExtensions setting. Use the complete publisher and extension ID, for example:

"settingsSync.ignoredExtensions": [
  "publisher.extension-id"
]

Ignoring an extension prevents it from participating in the synchronized extension set; it does not necessarily uninstall the copy already present on a computer.

Sync is not a remote-window installer

Extensions do not sync to or from remote windows such as SSH hosts, development containers, or WSL environments. A local VS Code installation and each remote authority maintain separate extension locations. If an extension is missing in a remote window, open that window and install the extension there, or use a profile-aware command in the environment where the extension must run.

Manage a profile from the command line

The VS Code command-line interface accepts --profile with extension operations. This is helpful when creating a repeatable workstation setup or documenting a project bootstrap script.

Install extensions into a profile

code --profile "Frontend" --install-extension publisher.extension-id

Run the command for each extension that belongs in the profile. The profile name must match the local profile exactly.

List extensions in a profile

code --profile "Frontend" --list-extensions

The output is useful for auditing what is installed in that profile or comparing two local profiles. Treat the list as a snapshot of one machine; it is not the same thing as a repository recommendation file.

Remove an extension from a profile

code --profile "Frontend" --uninstall-extension publisher.extension-id

Uninstalling removes the extension from that profile’s installed set. If the extension is also installed in another profile, that other profile is unaffected.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use scripts carefully

  • Quote profile names containing spaces.
  • Use stable extension IDs rather than display names.
  • Run commands against the same local VS Code installation that owns the profile.
  • Do not assume a command run against the local window installs an extension into an SSH, container, or WSL target.

A practical setup for several project types

The following arrangement keeps personal preferences separate from repository policy:

  1. Create a Frontend profile for JavaScript or TypeScript work and install only the extensions used for that workflow.
  2. Create a Python backend profile with the Python-specific language and testing tools.
  3. Associate each project workspace with the profile you want to use, then reopen each workspace once to confirm that VS Code remembers the association.
  4. For a repository shared with others, commit a recommendation file containing the tools the team considers useful.
  5. If one project conflicts with an otherwise useful extension, disable that extension for the workspace instead of cloning the entire profile.
  6. Enable Settings Sync for your personal categories and select profile synchronization if you want the named profiles available on another computer.
  7. When working in a remote window, install required extensions in that remote context and do not rely on local extension sync.

This arrangement gives a new teammate a visible, reviewable recommendation list while allowing each developer to keep a personal profile and local exceptions.

Troubleshoot extensions that appear in the wrong project

The expected profile is not active

Check the Profiles interface and confirm the active profile name before changing extensions. A workspace may have reopened with a different profile, or a command-line launch may have used another profile name. Switch to the intended profile and reopen the window if the extension list does not refresh immediately.

An extension is installed but does not run

Open its Manage menu and inspect whether it is disabled globally or for the current workspace. Workspace-specific disablement takes precedence for that workspace. Re-enable it for the workspace when appropriate, or remove the exception if it was created accidentally.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Teammates do not see a recommendation prompt

Confirm that the file is at the expected location: .vscode/extensions.json for a single-folder project, or the extensions.recommendations property in a multi-root workspace file. Check that the JSON is valid and that extension IDs are spelled correctly. Remember that a user can dismiss or decline recommendations; absence of an installation is not proof that the file was ignored.

Sync installed more extensions than expected

Review the Settings Sync categories and the profile selected on the destination computer. The Extensions category transfers your personal installed set and global enablement state, while recommendations are separate repository data. Exclude local-only extensions with settingsSync.ignoredExtensions and avoid enabling categories you do not want to transfer.

An extension works locally but not in SSH, a container, or WSL

Look at the extension’s installation location in the Extensions view. Remote-capable extensions often need a copy installed in the remote authority. Install or manage it while the remote window is active; local Settings Sync will not populate that remote environment.

A multi-root workspace has inconsistent tooling

Check both levels of configuration: the workspace file may contain shared recommendations, while an individual root may have its own .vscode/extensions.json. Also check whether a workspace-specific enablement choice was made while a different root or profile was active. Keep shared requirements in the repository and personal exceptions in your local workspace settings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep the configuration maintainable

  • Name profiles by durable workflows, not by individual clients or short-lived branches.
  • Keep recommendation files small and explain unusual choices in the repository’s contributor documentation.
  • Use workspace disablement for exceptions instead of duplicating a profile for every project.
  • Audit profiles periodically with --list-extensions so abandoned tools do not accumulate.
  • Separate personal synchronization from team configuration: Settings Sync follows your account, while recommendation files travel with the repository.
  • Test setup instructions in the same kind of window developers use. A local test does not prove that an SSH or container workspace has the required extensions.

Decision checklist

Choose a profile when the project needs a distinct combination of extensions, settings, and interface customizations. Choose Disable (Workspace) when one installed extension is the exception. Commit workspace recommendations when collaborators should be prompted about useful tools. Turn on Settings Sync when you need your personal setup on another computer, selecting Extensions and Profiles as appropriate. For remote development, manage extensions in the remote window itself.
