How to Manage Visual Testing Baselines and Branches

A practical guide to choosing, syncing, and reviewing visual-testing baselines across feature branches, with tool-specific notes for Playwright, Chromatic, and Percy.

A visual-testing baseline is the approved screenshot a later run compares against. To manage baselines safely across branches, choose how your tool selects and approves references, keep the capture environment consistent, and review every meaningful difference before accepting it. Then regularly bring changes from the base branch into feature branches so comparisons do not mistake already-approved upstream work for new changes.

Decide what owns the baseline

Baseline management starts with an approval policy: which screenshot is the reference, who may change it, and whether approval applies to a repository change, an entire test build, or an individual snapshot. These choices affect how a pull request behaves when branches diverge.

Approach How comparison and approval work Useful when Main consideration
Playwright screenshot references Reference images live in a directory next to tests. Commit and review updates in version control. You want to keep baseline files in your repository and use your existing Playwright workflow. Rendering can vary by host environment, so generate and compare references in a consistent environment. Playwright documentation.
Percy Git Percy finds a base-branch build through Git commit history; reviewers approve or reject the build as a whole. Visual tests run in CI on feature branches and approval fits a pull request or build-level review. Approval granularity is the whole build. BrowserStack documentation.
Percy Visual Git Each branch has a branchline of approved snapshots. Reviewers approve snapshots individually; teams can sync snapshots from the central baseline or merge branchline snapshots into it. Tests run separately from commit-based CI, or reviewers need snapshot-level approvals. Understand when to sync from the baseline and when to merge changes into it. BrowserStack documentation.
Chromatic UI Tests and UI Review UI Tests use accepted baselines by branch. UI Review compares snapshots from two branches using their Git merge base rather than the same baseline method. Storybook or component work, including Playwright-based snapshots, needs branch-aware visual review. Keep relevant branch builds available and understand sync and history-rewrite behavior. Chromatic documentation.

Pick the workflow that matches where you want references stored, how much reviewers approve at once, and whether comparison depends on Git ancestry. These approaches use different selection and approval models; there is no universally best choice.

Create a trustworthy first baseline

  1. Start from a known-good application state. Run the visual tests only after confirming that the UI and test data represent the intended reference state.
  2. Fix the capture environment. Record the browser and version, operating system or container, viewport, fonts, locale, timezone, and rendering setup. Keep test data and network-dependent UI predictable where applicable.
  3. Generate references in the environment you will use for comparisons. Playwright notes that OS, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode can affect rendering. It recommends using the same environment used to generate the reference screenshots. Playwright visual comparisons.
  4. Review before accepting. Confirm the screenshots show intended UI, not a transient loading state or unexpected content, then approve the initial reference according to your team’s chosen workflow.
  5. Make ownership explicit. Decide who reviews baseline changes and whether approval is recorded in Git, on a complete hosted build, or per snapshot.

For Playwright, screenshot reference files are stored in a separate directory next to the test. Its documentation recommends committing and reviewing the files rather than treating regenerated screenshots as disposable output.

Keep feature-branch comparisons current

A branch can have a valid baseline that is nevertheless stale relative to the rest of the project. For example, a shared component change may be approved on the integration branch while a feature branch still compares against screenshots from before that change. The feature branch can then report differences that are upstream work, not regressions in its own change.

  1. Run visual checks on the relevant base and pull-request branches. Some review workflows need builds on both branches. Chromatic UI Review, for example, needs builds on the head and base branch to produce a changeset. Chromatic branches and baselines.
  2. Periodically merge or rebase the latest base or integration branch into the feature branch. Do this often enough that unrelated approved changes do not accumulate.
  3. Run the visual tests again and inspect each difference. Decide whether it is a genuine feature change, an expected upstream change, or an unexpected regression before updating any reference.
  4. Accept only intentional changes. Reject unexplained differences and investigate them before regenerating references. This review-first policy prevents an automatic refresh from hiding a real UI problem.

Chromatic tracks UI Test baselines by branch. A new branch inherits a baseline from its branch point, then maintains an independent branch baseline; an accepted change on one branch does not automatically update every other feature branch. Its UI Review workflow is distinct: it compares branches from their Git merge base rather than using the same baseline method. Chromatic branch behavior.

Handle merges, rebases, and rewritten history carefully

Chromatic baseline selection during merges

When a merge gives Chromatic multiple candidate snapshots, it generally selects the most recently approved change. The preferMergedBaselines option can make accepted baselines from an incoming integration branch take precedence; it uses the baseline from the last sync point. If the feature branch is substantially behind the base, sync it first rather than assuming the option will select the newest-looking reference. Chromatic merge behavior.

Rebases, squash merges, and history rewrites

After a rebase or other history rewrite, check that the baseline selected by the tool is still the one you intend. Chromatic retains accepted baselines from the latest build on the current branch even if Git ancestry changes. If commits that Chromatic has already built are removed or altered, its stored history can include commits no longer visible in Git; its documentation advises running Chromatic after a rewrite to update its view. Chromatic also documents detecting squash and rebase merges with provider APIs and using accepted baselines from the pull request head when the merge build runs. Chromatic history behavior.

Percy branchlines

Percy Git and Visual Git should not be treated as interchangeable approval modes. Git mode locates a base-branch build through commit history and accepts or rejects the complete build. Visual Git maintains approved snapshots on branchlines, with explicit actions to sync from the central baseline or merge branchline snapshots into it. Choose the action that matches the intended direction of change; branchline approval alone is not the same workflow as approving a whole Git-based build. Percy branch approvals and Percy Visual Git.

Make screenshots reproducible

A baseline is useful only when a new capture is comparable to it. Playwright specifically identifies the host OS, browser version and settings, hardware, power source, and headless mode as possible sources of rendering variation. Match the environment used to create the references wherever practical. Playwright visual comparisons.

As project-level controls, also consider holding viewport, fonts, locale, timezone, test data, animation state, and network-dependent content steady. These are practical reproducibility measures, not a claim that Playwright requires a particular value for each setting. If a difference appears across many unrelated screenshots after a runner or browser update, check for an environment change before approving a large batch of new references.

Troubleshoot unexpected diffs

  • A feature branch shows changes already accepted on the base branch: its reference may predate the upstream change. Merge or rebase the current base branch, rerun the checks, and review the resulting diffs before approving.
  • Visual diffs appear across many tests at once: compare the current runner, browser version and settings, OS/container, headless mode, and other capture conditions with the baseline-generation environment. Restore a consistent environment or deliberately review the resulting reference update.
  • A comparison has no expected branch changeset: verify that builds exist on both the head and base branches when using Chromatic UI Review, which requires those builds to produce a changeset. Chromatic documentation.
  • The selected baseline seems wrong after a merge: check which branch or build supplied the candidate snapshot and when it was approved. For Chromatic, confirm the feature branch is synced before relying on preferMergedBaselines.
  • Git history no longer matches the visual tool’s branch history: after a rebase or rewrite, run the relevant build and verify the selected reference. Chromatic documents that its accepted-baseline history can outlast commits removed from Git.
  • A baseline update would accept an unexplained visual change: do not refresh it yet. Inspect the rendered page and test state, identify whether the change is intentional, and approve only after that review.

Or skip the browser setup

For a single page capture, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-request alternative to configuring a browser screenshot run. It accepts cookie or consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. One thousand screenshots per month are free without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. This is useful for capturing reference images, but it does not replace your test runner’s branch comparison and approval policy. See ScreenshotNeo and the API documentation.
