A Selenium 4 end-to-end test in Java starts a browser, follows a user workflow, waits for the resulting page state, asserts what the user should see, and closes the browser session. Selenium supplies browser automation—not a test runner or assertion library—so pair it with JUnit or TestNG and put setup and cleanup in the runner’s lifecycle.
1. Add Selenium and choose a test runner
Add Selenium’s Java library to your Maven or Gradle project, then choose the test framework your team already uses or can support. Selenium’s installation guide documents the org.seleniumhq.selenium:selenium-java dependency for both build tools; pin a release deliberately and verify that it fits the Java runtime and browser environment you will run. Selenium installation instructions
JUnit and TestNG are both options named in Selenium’s documentation. They provide the test lifecycle and assertions; Selenium drives the browser. Choose based on team familiarity, fixture and hook needs, parameterized tests, reporting integrations, and parallel execution. Selenium’s organizing guide notes that its coverage is incomplete, so it should not be treated as a full framework comparison. Selenium: organizing and executing code
Maven dependency
In pom.xml, add Selenium as a dependency. Add the JUnit Jupiter test dependency and a compatible Surefire configuration according to the versions used by your project; the exact current test-plugin versions are project-specific.

<dependencies>
<dependency>
<groupId>org.seleniumhq.selenium</groupId>
<artifactId>selenium-java</artifactId>
<version>${selenium.version}</version>

Replace 4.x.y with the Selenium release you have selected; it is an explanatory placeholder, not a valid version. The dependency coordinates and Gradle option are in the official install guide.
Gradle dependency
For a Gradle project using the Java plugin, add the same library to the test configuration:
dependencies {
testImplementation 'org.seleniumhq.selenium:selenium-java:4.x.y'
}
Replace 4.x.y with the selected release. Configure JUnit Jupiter or TestNG separately so the build can discover and execute your tests.

2. Write a complete browser test
This JUnit 5 example tests a form submission. Replace the example URL and locators with the application’s actual page and stable controls. The code shows the test lifecycle end to end; it is illustrative, not a claim that this specific application or code has been run.

The test expresses a user-visible contract: the form is available, the user submits it, and a confirmation appears. Use application-specific data and locators, and keep the assertion in the test framework so a mismatch is reported as a test failure. The Selenium first-script guide demonstrates the same basic navigation, interaction, result inspection, and session shutdown flow. Selenium: write your first script
Why cleanup belongs in a fixture
The @AfterEach hook runs after each test, including when an assertion fails, and calls quit() to end the browser session. For a larger suite, use the runner’s lifecycle hooks rather than repeating setup and cleanup inside every test. Keep each test’s initial state predictable; shared browser state can make failures difficult to diagnose.

3. Wait for page conditions, not guessed delays
Use an explicit wait for the exact state required by the next action: for example, an element becoming visible before typing, becoming clickable before a click, or appearing after submission. WebDriverWait is a FluentWait<WebDriver> specialization and its Java API accepts a Duration. It ignores NotFoundException by default while checking its condition. WebDriverWait Java API
In the sample, the visibility wait prevents typing before the email field is ready, and the second wait synchronizes the assertion with the confirmation appearing. Choose a timeout appropriate to the application and test environment. A timeout is a maximum wait, not a delay that must always elapse.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Prefer:
visibilityOfElementLocatedwhen the next step needs a visible control, orelementToBeClickablewhen it must be clickable. - Avoid: blanket
Thread.sleepcalls. They slow down fast runs and can still be too short for slow ones. - Do not treat implicit wait as a universal fix: Selenium’s first-script page describes it as a placeholder and says it is rarely the best general solution.
4. Do you still need to download ChromeDriver?
Usually, not for a standard Selenium 4 setup. Selenium Manager is included with Selenium releases starting at 4.6 and is used by the bindings as a fallback when a driver has not otherwise been supplied. It can locate, download, and cache drivers. Selenium’s documentation describes automated browser management as available starting with Selenium 4.11.0. The Selenium project documentation calls it “the official driver manager for Selenium, shipped out of the box with every Selenium release.” If your team needs tightly controlled binaries, a preconfigured environment, or a particular driver-management arrangement, supplying a driver manually or using another manager remains an option. Selenium Manager is the ordinary fallback, not a requirement to remove all explicit environment configuration.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.5. Run locally, then decide whether to scale
Start with a local browser run: it is the simplest loop for debugging locators, page behavior, and waits. As the suite grows, use the chosen runner’s hooks, grouping, and reporting capabilities to make repeated runs maintainable. Selenium lists JUnit and TestNG but does not rank them; choose based on the suite’s needs rather than assuming one is universally better. Selenium runner guidance
When tests need to run in parallel across machines and browser types, Selenium Grid is the Selenium project’s option for distributed execution. It introduces infrastructure and environment coordination, so adopt it when the benefits of distributed runs justify that operational complexity; the project documentation does not prescribe one universal CI configuration. 6. Troubleshoot common failures
- Browser or driver cannot be started: confirm the Selenium dependency is present, the intended browser is installed or otherwise available, and the test environment permits Selenium Manager to resolve what is missing. If your environment requires controlled binaries, configure and provide the matching driver explicitly.
- Wait times out locating an element: check that the test navigated to the expected page, the locator matches the current markup, and the element is not inside a frame or another context that must be selected first. Wait for a condition that represents the state the test actually needs.
- Element is found but interaction fails: it may not yet be visible or clickable, or another page element may be intercepting the action. Wait for the relevant state and check the page’s current behavior instead of adding a fixed sleep.
- Test passes locally but fails in a suite: inspect setup and teardown, test data, and state shared between cases. Ensure each test starts from the expected conditions and that
quit()runs even after a failure. - Test framework does not discover the case: verify the framework dependency, test annotations, source-set location, and build-tool test configuration. Selenium automates the browser but does not itself discover tests or provide framework assertions.
- Parallel run behaves differently from local execution: confirm the remote browser and machine configuration support the capabilities and concurrency you are requesting. Grid distributes sessions; it does not remove the need to make test data and setup safe for concurrent runs.
Or skip the browser setup
If the task is to capture a page rather than interactively test an application workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API and MCP server. A single GET request can return a PNG, JPEG, WebP, or PDF; it is not a replacement for Selenium’s browser-driven interaction and assertions.
For example, using the supplied cURL pattern with the page you want to capture:
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://example.com -o shot.webp
See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options. Cookie banners are accepted and removed before the shot, along with known newsletter popups and chat widgets; each step can be disabled. Bot checks, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits cost nothing, and response headers identify page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server lets AI agents use take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf. The free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots. Frequently Asked Questions
Can Selenium test an entire user journey across multiple pages?
Yes. A test can navigate through the application’s pages and assert the outcomes at each important transition; keep the workflow focused enough that a failure is diagnosable.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan I use Firefox or another browser instead of Chrome?
Yes. Selenium supports browser-specific drivers; use the corresponding driver class and ensure the browser and driver-management setup are available in the environment where the test runs.
