To avoid a last-minute download or update, check the game’s library and available drive space first, queue its files ahead of less urgent downloads, and launch it once before the playtest to confirm it is ready. Steam’s Download Manager, update settings, and Storage controls let you prepare the game without guessing at a universal space buffer or finish time.
1. Check the game’s installation and available space
In Steam, open Settings > Storage to see the library locations on your drives and identify where the target game is installed. Compare the available space with the game’s displayed requirements. Steam does not specify a universal free-space buffer; leave reasonable headroom for updates based on the game and your system.

If the current library is short on space, use Storage to add a library folder on another drive, or choose an existing library with enough capacity when installing. Check that the drive is compatible with your computer and suitable for the playtest’s performance needs. Steam supports multiple library folders, but cautions against installing Steam itself on an external hard drive because of potential performance issues (Steam Support: Moving a Steam Installation and Games).
Move an installed game without downloading it again
If the game is already installed and you have added or selected another library, move it through either of Steam’s documented routes. The Storage interface is useful for managing several titles at once; the game Properties route targets an individual title.

- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the drive containing the game, then select the game (or games) to move.
- Choose Move and select the destination library.
- Alternatively, open Library > right-click the game > Properties > Installed Files > Move Install Folder.

2. Queue the game and schedule updates
Open the Downloads page from Steam’s client link or choose View > Downloads. The Download Manager shows download progress, queue order, and completed updates. Move the playtest game ahead of less urgent work so it has priority in the queue; a higher queue position does not guarantee a finish time, since delivery and local installation also affect when the game is ready.

In Steam > Settings > Downloads, review the update schedule and bandwidth limit. Choose a download window that leaves enough time before the session, and limit Steam’s bandwidth if other people or applications need the connection.

Choose the per-game update behavior deliberately
Open Library > right-click the game > Properties > Updates to review its automatic update preference. Selecting Only update this game when I launch it can defer an update, but launching with a pending update forces it to begin then. That can turn a planned playtest start into update time. Use the setting only if you know when the update will happen and can allow time before the session. Steam also offers a high-priority choice for a game’s automatic update. 3. Estimate download time without mixing units
Steam displays download throughput in bytes per second, while internet plans usually advertise bits per second. Since one byte is eight bits, the figures will look different even when they describe the same rate. Steam Support gives the example that 768 KB/s equals 6,144 Kb/s, or 6 megabits per second (Setting Client Rates (Limit Download Speed) in Steam; Slow Downloads and Connection to Content Servers).
For a rough estimate, convert the connection and download figures to consistent units, then allow for other network activity and Steam’s delivery capacity. Installation work on the computer can also take time after data arrives. Without the game’s download size, your connection conditions, and the test machine, there is no reliable exact finish-time estimate.

4. Keep downloads from disrupting the playtest
Steam automatically pauses downloads when a game launches to prioritize the game’s network activity (Steam Support: Downloads automatically pause when launching a game). For a playtest where network conditions matter, finish downloading and updating beforehand, then launch the game early enough to confirm it opens on the intended build.

If you need downloads to continue during gameplay, enable Allow Downloads During Gameplay in Steam > Settings > Downloads. Steam advises considering a bandwidth limit if downloads affect gameplay network performance. Allowing downloads can be useful when time is tight, but it may compete with the playtest’s network traffic.

5. Troubleshoot only when something goes wrong
Steam is slower than expected
- Check the units before treating the displayed rate as unusually low.
- In Steam > Settings > Downloads, check the selected Download Region. Choose your region or a nearby one; Steam says trying another nearby region may help if a content-server region is slow or overloaded.
- Consider whether other network use or a bandwidth limit is affecting the transfer.

An installation or update fails
Steam lists clearing the download cache, repairing the Library folder, verifying installed files, and trying another drive among the troubleshooting options for installation and update problems. Use the steps relevant to the specific error rather than treating diagnostics such as disk or RAM checks as routine pre-playtest maintenance. See Steam Support: Update & Installation Issues.
