Managing risk starts before you open a leveraged crypto position: identify the exact contract, calculate its notional exposure, check the venue’s margin and liquidation rules, and decide what loss you can tolerate. Leverage magnifies gains and losses relative to posted margin; neither a stop order, extra collateral nor a displayed liquidation price guarantees an exit price or caps losses.
What kind of leveraged crypto position are you considering?
“Crypto leverage” can describe different products, and their mechanics are not interchangeable. Before comparing leverage settings, establish what you would actually hold:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Spot margin: You trade the underlying asset using borrowed funds. Check borrowing terms, interest, collateral rules and whether the venue can sell collateral or close the position.
- Dated futures: A contract settles on a specified date. Check whether it is cash-settled or delivers the underlying, and how its settlement index or auction price is determined. The CFTC’s virtual-currency advisory says many virtual-currency futures are cash-settled and urges customers to understand the settlement reference.
- Perpetual futures: These contracts have no fixed expiry, but may involve periodic funding payments between long and short positions. Check the live contract terms, funding mechanism and rate; there is no universal rate to use in a risk estimate.
Also establish which market price the product tracks and which price the venue uses for margin and settlement. Futures exposure can differ from spot-price movements. A joint SEC/CFTC staff alert about funds trading in Bitcoin futures describes tracking differences in that fund context; it is not a general rule about every retail derivative.

There is no universally safe leverage setting, and the available official and venue sources do not establish a suitable amount for an individual trader. Choose risk limits by considering the position’s notional exposure and potential loss—not by aiming for the highest leverage a venue permits.

Leverage is the relationship between a position’s notional value and the margin supporting it. For a given notional position, using more leverage generally means posting less initial margin. It also means each price move has a larger effect relative to that margin. The CFTC warns that volatility’s gains and losses are amplified in margined futures and that customers can lose more than their initial investment. The relevant exposure is therefore not just the cash you deposit: it is the size and risk of the position the deposit supports.
For illustration, a Binance hypothetical example uses a 20x leveraged, 1 BTC notional position entered at $55,000 and shows a long liquidation price of $50,200 and a short liquidation price of $59,750. These figures are Binance’s example, not a typical liquidation distance or a recommendation. They do not transfer to another contract, account balance, margin mode or date. See Binance’s liquidation example, updated 2026-01-02.

To compare choices, calculate the notional exposure and required initial margin under the current contract specifications, then consider how an adverse move, fees, funding or borrowing charges, and slippage could affect the account. The live venue fee and contract pages matter: the sources cited here do not establish a current, universal fee schedule or perpetual funding rate.
What margin and liquidation rules determine whether a position stays open?
Initial margin is not a loss limit
Initial margin is collateral required to open or support a position; it does not necessarily limit the amount you can lose. Maintenance margin is the collateral threshold required to keep a position open. A venue may calculate it using notional-value tiers, so requirements can change as position size changes. Binance describes tiered maintenance margin and warns that failure to meet its requirement may lead to liquidation. Its rules apply to its own products and may change; check the current specifications for the exact contract and account.

Find the liquidation trigger and price reference
Read the venue’s rules to identify the price used to trigger liquidation—such as mark price, rather than the last traded price—and how the displayed liquidation estimate is calculated. Binance’s futures guidance describes mark price as its liquidation reference. It also warns that volatile conditions can cause actual liquidation execution to differ from the initially calculated price. A liquidation price is a rule-based estimate, not a promised execution price.
Check whether the contract uses partial liquidation, charges liquidation fees, or has an insurance fund or auto-deleveraging process. These mechanisms affect how a venue handles liquidations; they do not make the position loss-free. Binance’s explanation of its processes is available in Binance Futures Liquidation Protocols; consult the live rules because venue procedures and figures may change.

What is the difference between cross margin and isolated margin?
The distinction is about which collateral supports a position under a venue’s rules—not about whether the trade itself is safe.
- Isolated margin assigns a defined amount of margin to a position. Losses and liquidation risk are generally limited to that position’s allocated margin, subject to the venue’s contract rules and any additional collateral you add.
- Cross margin shares eligible account collateral across positions. That may give a position more collateral before liquidation, but losses in one position can put more of the shared balance at risk and affect other positions.
Names and precise behavior vary by venue, account type and product. Verify which balances are shared, how unrealized profit and loss is treated, and whether a margin-mode change affects open positions. Do not assume that isolated mode limits total account loss in every circumstance or that cross margin provides protection from liquidation.

How do I avoid liquidation when trading crypto with leverage?
You cannot guarantee that a leveraged position will avoid liquidation. You can, however, check the key conditions before entry and monitor the factors that can move the position toward its maintenance threshold.
- Read the exact contract specification. Confirm the product, settlement method, price index or reference, and whether it is spot margin, dated futures or a perpetual.
- Calculate notional exposure and required initial margin. Use the venue’s current contract details. Do not treat the deposited margin as the maximum possible loss.
- Locate the maintenance-margin schedule. Check the applicable notional tier, whether a larger position moves into a different tier, and how the venue handles requirement changes.
- Identify the liquidation reference and process. Find the trigger price input, estimated liquidation price, possible liquidation fees, and any partial-liquidation, insurance-fund or auto-deleveraging rules.
- Set a position size you can afford to lose. Reducing notional exposure reduces the amount at risk from a given price move. A stop order may help manage an exit, but gaps, slippage, order execution rules and fast markets can prevent execution at the intended price.
- Account for carrying and trading costs. Include trading fees, borrowing interest or perpetual funding payments, as applicable, as well as slippage and liquidity. Recheck live rates and terms rather than assuming a fixed cost.
- Monitor collateral and the position. Venue alerts can provide information but are not a substitute for monitoring. Binance advises reducing a position or increasing margin before collateral falls below maintenance margin. Adding margin can expose more funds to loss and does not guarantee that liquidation will be avoided.
What risks remain beyond the margin calculation?
A margin calculator cannot capture every market or platform risk. The CFTC lists volatility, flash crashes, manipulation, cyber risks and weak or absent government supervision among risks in virtual-currency cash markets. Thin liquidity or a sudden price gap can also complicate an exit. For derivatives, check the venue’s execution and settlement rules as well as the underlying market reference.
Venue protections and oversight depend on the product and jurisdiction. Before trading, check whether the product is available and regulated where you live, how the venue handles customer assets and complaints, and which protections actually apply. Do not assume a regulator supervises every crypto cash market or that an exchange’s educational material is independent confirmation that the platform suits you.

The CFTC’s customer advisory says, “There is no such thing as a guaranteed investment or trading strategy,” and advises, “Do not invest in products or strategies you do not understand.” The advisory is investor-service material, not a legal interpretation or statement of CFTC policy.
Pre-trade decision checklist
- Can you explain the contract, settlement method and price references?
- Have you calculated notional exposure, initial margin and the relevant maintenance-margin tier?
- Do you know what price triggers liquidation and how the venue executes it?
- Have you checked whether margin is isolated or shared, and what collateral could be exposed?
- Have you accounted for fees, borrowing or funding charges, slippage, liquidity and gap risk?
- Can you accept the full possible loss, including losses that may exceed initial margin?
If any answer is unclear, do not treat a leverage setting, buffer or notification as a substitute for understanding the product and its risks.
