A USB extended-storage drive can archive PS5 games but cannot run them directly; a compatible M.2 SSD can store and run PS5 games. Check the game’s current store listing or the download prompt for the space it presently requires—there is no safe universal free-space number for every title.
How do I make room on my PS5 before downloading a big game?
Start by measuring the space the console has now, rather than guessing from a game’s advertised size. On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Storage. The storage screen separates space used by games, media and saved data, so you can choose the least disruptive item to remove.

Next, decide whether you need an immediate download or want to keep older games playable without waiting for a copy operation. Deleting a game is the quickest no-cost option. Moving an infrequently played PS5 game to USB extended storage preserves its installation but requires copying it back before play. Installing a Sony-compatible M.2 SSD adds a location from which PS5 games can be installed and played.

Check exactly what is consuming console storage
Use the Storage screen first
- From the home screen, select Settings.
- Select Storage.
- Review the categories for games, media and saved data, along with the available console space.
This view tells you whether a large game installation is actually the main problem. If media or multiple applications occupy more space than expected, removing one of those items may avoid touching a game you still use. The storage report is also the right place to verify the result after every deletion or move.
Check the download’s present requirement
Open the game’s current store listing or begin the download far enough for the PS5 to show its space requirement. Treat that figure as the requirement for that edition and release at that moment, not as a rule for other games. Do not rely on a generic claim that every large title needs a particular amount of free space.
Sony’s storage guidance is documented in How to manage PS5 console storage space. The page is written for US English; menu wording and account or store availability can differ by region.
Delete a game or application without losing the purchase
When deletion is the best choice
Delete an installed game or application when you need space now and do not need that software immediately. It is normally the fastest way to reclaim console storage without adding hardware. The trade-off is download time later: the installation is removed, so you must download it again before playing.
Use the Games and Apps list
- Open Settings > Storage.
- Select Console Storage.
- Open Games and Apps.
- Select the game or application you no longer need installed.
- Choose the delete command and confirm only the item you intend to remove.
Check the free-space figure on the Storage screen after the operation. If the download still will not start, return to the game’s listing or download prompt and compare its current requirement with the newly available amount.

What happens to a purchased game?
Deleting the local installation does not remove the purchase entitlement from your account. Sony states: “Don’t worry, you won’t lose access to any deleted games or applications — you can re-download your purchases from your game library whenever you like.” You can therefore remove a purchased title to make room and retrieve it later from the game library, provided you use the account that owns the purchase. The quotation and the storage procedure appear in Sony’s storage-space guide.
Deletion still removes the installed game files from the console. Plan for a new download, updates and any optional content when you reinstall; the exact amount and time depend on the title and your connection.
Remove only unused parts when a game offers Customize
Look for the game-specific option
Some games expose a Customize option in the Games and Apps storage view. Sony says this can let you manage separate portions of a game, such as unused add-ons or parts you have already completed. Use it when you want to keep the core installation while removing content you no longer need.
- Go to Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
- Highlight the relevant game.
- Look for Customize.
- Review each listed portion and select only the add-on or completed section you are certain you will not use.
- Confirm the removal, then check the available-space figure.
Do not expect this control on every game. Its availability and the portions shown are determined by the game’s installation design. If Customize is absent, use the ordinary delete, move or expansion options instead of assuming that a partial uninstall is possible.
Move installed games to USB extended storage
What USB storage can and cannot do
USB extended storage is useful when you want to keep PS5 game data without occupying the console’s internal storage. It is an archive location for PS5 games: the games must be copied back to console storage or to an M.2 SSD before you can play them. That copy-back step is the key limitation, so USB is best for titles you play occasionally or want to retain between downloads.

PS4 games have different behavior. Sony says PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage, while PS5 games cannot. A drive that is convenient for a PS4 library therefore does not remove the copy-back requirement for PS5 titles.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChoose USB when the delay is acceptable
- Good fit: you need to clear console space, already have suitable USB extended storage, and can wait for a PS5 game to copy back when you decide to play it.
- Less suitable: you switch among several PS5 games every day and want each one immediately playable.
- Useful bonus: PS4 games can run from the extended-storage drive instead of using console storage.
Use Sony’s regional instructions for setup, moving and the requirements that apply to the drive: USB extended storage on PS5 consoles. That page is in Australian English; check the requirements for your console and region before formatting a drive.
Plan the move around your next play session
Move a less-used PS5 game before starting a large download, then leave the game on the USB drive until you want it. When you are ready to play, copy it back to console storage or M.2 storage first. Moving data does not turn USB storage into a direct-play location for PS5 software, so do not disconnect the drive and expect the game to launch from the archive.
Add an M.2 SSD when PS5 games must remain playable
Why M.2 storage is different
A compatible M.2 SSD expands the locations that can hold and run PS5 games. Sony supports downloading games directly to M.2 storage and moving installed games there, so you can use the added space without the USB archive-and-copy-back cycle.
Compatibility is not automatic. The SSD must meet Sony’s current specifications, and the console installation has its own requirements. Do not select a drive solely because it is an M.2 model or because its capacity appears large enough.

Verify compatibility before buying or installing
- Read Sony’s current requirements in How to add an M.2 SSD to a PS5 console.
- Match the candidate drive to every requirement Sony lists for your PS5 model and software, rather than relying on a retailer’s generic “PS5 compatible” label.
- Follow Sony’s installation and formatting procedure exactly; an incompatible or incorrectly installed drive may not be available for game storage.
- After setup, confirm that the M.2 location appears as a storage destination and move or download a game there.
The linked instructions are Philippines English. The supported specification and installation guidance can change, so use Sony’s current page at the time you make the purchase.
Choose M.2 when convenience matters more than avoiding hardware
- Choose it for: a library of PS5 games that should stay installed and playable without repeated copy operations.
- Expect: an installation task, a need to verify current compatibility, and the cost of a separate drive.
- Do not assume: any particular capacity, speed or price is sufficient unless Sony’s current requirements and the drive’s specification both confirm it.
Keep saves, installations and media separate
Game installations are not saved games
Deleting or moving an installed game addresses the game files. Saved-game data is a separate category in Sony’s storage table, so do not treat a game deletion as a substitute for a save-data backup plan. If you are unsure which item a menu is offering to remove, stop and verify the category before confirming.
PS5 saves and PlayStation Plus cloud storage
Sony’s storage guidance lists PlayStation Plus cloud storage for PS5 saved data. Cloud storage is for saves, not for installed game data. Uploading a save does not create room for a large game installation, and deleting an installation does not by itself move the save to the cloud.
PS4 saves, screenshots and video clips
PS4 saved data and screenshots or video clips have different USB handling from PS5 saved data in Sony’s guidance. Keep those categories distinct when planning a cleanup: a USB workflow that applies to PS4 saves or media should not be assumed to be a destination for PS5 saves. The storage screen identifies the category before you remove anything.

| Option | Best use | Constraint to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| Delete an installed game or app | Free console storage immediately without buying hardware | You will need to download the software again; Sony says purchased items remain in the library for redownload. |
| Remove a game portion | Keep a game while removing supported unused add-ons or completed content | Only games that provide Customize offer this control. |
| USB extended storage | Move less-used PS5 games off console storage; play PS4 games from the drive | PS5 games must be copied back to console or M.2 storage before play. |
| Compatible M.2 SSD | Add storage that can hold and run PS5 games and receive direct downloads | Verify Sony’s current compatibility and installation requirements first. |
| PlayStation Plus cloud storage | Store PS5 saved data in the cloud | It stores saves, not installed game files. |
Use this decision rule: delete when you need the fastest result and can redownload; use Customize when the game supports a smaller selective cleanup; use USB when PS5 games can wait for a copy-back; choose M.2 when they need to stay playable from expanded storage; use cloud storage for saves rather than installations.

A safe cleanup workflow before you press Download
- Record the target requirement. Read the game’s current store listing or the PS5 download prompt and note the space it requests for your edition.
- Measure available space. Open Settings > Storage and inspect games, media and saved data.
- Protect anything irreplaceable. Identify saves, screenshots and clips before selecting a deletion category. Use the save and media handling that applies to the platform and service; do not assume ordinary USB storage is a PS5-save destination.
- Pick the least disruptive action. Try Customize if it appears; otherwise delete a redownloadable title or move a less-used PS5 game to USB.
- Recheck the figure. Return to the Storage screen and confirm that the available amount changed as expected.
- Start the download. If the prompt still reports insufficient space, cancel rather than deleting at random and review another category or storage location.
- Choose a permanent fix if this recurs. A compatible M.2 SSD is the option that lets PS5 games remain playable in expanded storage; USB remains an archive-and-copy-back workflow.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
The download still says there is not enough space
Reopen Settings > Storage and compare the available amount with the current requirement shown by the game’s listing or download prompt. You may have removed less than expected, or another category may be using the remaining space. Repeat the review instead of relying on a typical game-size estimate, because no single free-space threshold applies to every title.
The game is gone from the home screen
If you deleted the installation, look in the game library under the account that owns the purchase and redownload it. Deletion removes local files, not the purchase entitlement, according to Sony’s storage guidance.
A PS5 game on USB will not start
That behavior is expected for USB extended storage. Copy the game back to console storage or to an installed M.2 SSD before launching it. PS4 games are the exception and can be played directly from USB extended storage under Sony’s guidance.
Recommended Free Tools
Customize is missing
The game may not support selective content removal. Sony describes Customize as an option available when a game offers manageable portions, not as a universal PS5 control. Use full deletion, a supported move, or additional storage instead.
You are considering an M.2 SSD but cannot confirm it is suitable
Pause the purchase and compare the drive with Sony’s current M.2 requirements and installation instructions. Do not infer compatibility from the connector, brand description or capacity alone. The official instructions are at Sony’s M.2 SSD support page.
The practical answer for your next large download
For a one-time space shortage, open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, remove a title you can redownload, or use Customize if the game exposes removable portions. If you want to keep PS5 installations without using internal space, move seldom-played titles to USB and plan to copy them back. If you want expanded storage where PS5 games can stay installed and playable, install an M.2 SSD only after verifying Sony’s current compatibility requirements. Keep save data and media decisions separate from game-file cleanup, and let the specific game’s store listing or download prompt—not a generic number—determine how much room you need.
