Scene Collections organize different sets of scenes and sources; Profiles save stream and output settings. They do different jobs, so use both when you need separate production layouts and output configurations.
Plan scenes around the moments in your broadcast
Scenes are layouts you select within OBS; they are not separate YouTube broadcasts. Start with only the scenes your show needs, for example:

- Welcome: a title card, starting message, or camera view while you prepare.
- Main content: gameplay, a desktop or application capture, and any relevant camera or overlay.
- Discussion: a camera-focused layout for talking to viewers.
- Break: an intermission screen if you need to step away.
- Ending: a closing screen or final camera view.
Name scenes clearly so you can identify them quickly while live. OBS uses scene and source names throughout its interface, so avoid giving a source the same name as a scene.

Build a scene with sources
A scene is the layout; sources are the content placed in it. Depending on your production, sources may include a game or window capture, camera or capture card, image, text, browser overlay, or media source. OBS describes sources and their setup in its Sources Guide.

- In the Scenes dock, add a scene and give it a recognizable name.
- With that scene selected, use the Sources dock to add the capture or media sources it needs.
- Arrange sources in the preview by selecting and positioning or resizing them.
- Check the source order: items higher in the Sources list appear over items below them. Drag a source to change its layer.
- Use the eye control beside a source to hide or show it in that scene.
- Repeat for each scene, adding only the elements required for that layout.
A browser overlay or other source may still use system resources when it is hidden. Keep collections focused, and avoid accumulating expensive sources you do not need; OBS notes that large or complex collections can affect responsiveness.
Switch scenes without showing your preparation
Directly selecting a scene sends it to the live output. That is convenient when the scene is ready, but it can expose unfinished changes. For a more controlled change, enable Studio Mode: OBS shows the current live scene and a separate edit/preview scene. Prepare the next layout in the edit side, then use Transition to put it on air. OBS notes that viewers cannot see whether Studio Mode itself is enabled; they see the output you send live. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.

Cut and Fade are available at first launch. OBS also lists Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color, and Luma Wipe as additional options. Select the active transition and set its duration to suit the program. A cut is immediate; a fade or other transition takes time and changes the feel of the handoff. There is no universally best choice—use the one that fits your pacing and the change you need to make.

Use Scene Collections for layouts and Profiles for output settings
These two OBS features are easy to confuse. A Scene Collection holds scenes and sources; a Profile holds settings such as the streaming service, video, and output configuration. OBS documents the distinction in its guides to Scene Collections and Profiles.

| OBS feature | What it is for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Scene Collection | A set of scenes and sources for a production layout. It also contains Global Audio Sources configured under Settings → Audio. | Separate layouts for a podcast, a gaming show, or recording-only work. |
| Profile | Stream, video, and output settings; it does not store scenes. | A distinct output configuration for a different streaming setup. |
Use separate Scene Collections when production formats need different source and layout sets. Use Profiles when the output or stream settings need to differ. A Scene Collection is not a complete backup of every system setting; keep that distinction in mind when organizing your setup.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
YouTube’s encoder workflow is intended for productions such as gameplay or screen sharing, external audio/video hardware, and setups with multiple cameras or microphones. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and use the server URL and stream key provided for the encoder. If OBS does not offer a direct YouTube selection, enter those values in its stream settings. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup instructions for the available interface and connection steps.

- Confirm the intended scene is selected and each capture source shows the right content.
- Check that text and browser overlays are readable and positioned correctly.
- Speak or play audio and watch the OBS audio meters for the expected input.
- In Studio Mode, prepare a different scene and test the transition before relying on it live.
- Confirm YouTube receives the encoder feed and its stream preview appears before you start the broadcast.
- Make sure the stream key is not visible in any captured window or overlay.
Troubleshoot common scene problems
A source is missing or covered
Check that the correct scene is selected, the source is present in its Sources list, and its eye control is on. If it appears behind another item, move it higher in the list. Recheck its position and size in the preview.
The wrong scene went live
When Studio Mode is on, distinguish the live/program side from the edit/preview side. Prepare the desired scene in preview and use the intended transition. If you select a scene directly, it changes the live output immediately.
Switching scenes makes OBS sluggish
Large or complex collections can reduce responsiveness, and some sources continue to use resources while not visible. Remove sources that are not needed, limit expensive sources such as excessive Browser Sources, and split unrelated productions into focused Scene Collections. OBS has further guidance in Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

Check that OBS is connected using the correct YouTube server URL and stream key, and verify the feed in Live Control Room. If this is the first time the channel has enabled live streaming, YouTube’s stated activation time may be up to 24 hours.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube stream of prerecorded video rather than switching OBS scenes during a live production, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
