OBS Studio is the best-documented free starting point if you want to key out a green screen while recording or building a live scene. If you would rather record first and apply the effect while editing, Microsoft Clipchamp offers a timeline-based green-screen workflow. Neither tool is established here as producing a cleaner key than the other: the choice depends on when you want to apply the effect and which controls fit your workflow.

Use OBS Studio for a keyed source in a recording scene
OBS suits a workflow where you want to compose a webcam, screen capture, and other visual sources into scenes, then record or stream that production. Its listed source types include window captures, images, text, browser windows, webcams, and capture cards. The OBS Project describes the software as “Free and open source software for video recording and live streaming.” (OBS Studio)

- Install the current OBS Studio release for your operating system from the official OBS site. Check the site for current compatibility information; the listed release and supported operating systems are volatile.
- Create or select a scene, then add your webcam or other green-screen footage as a source. Add the screen capture, image, or other elements you want in the composition.
- Open the source’s filters and add the Chroma Key filter. OBS documents this filter for Windows, macOS, and Linux.
- Choose the key color that matches the backdrop, then adjust Similarity, Smoothness, and Spill Reduction while watching your own preview.
- Record a short sample and review the edges and retained details before making a longer recording or starting a live production.
How to tune OBS without losing detail
- Similarity: This controls how aggressively OBS removes the key color. Increasing it can also remove pixels you meant to keep, so raise it only as far as needed.
- Smoothness: Adjust it against your footage to refine the transition around the keyed area.
- Spill reduction: Use it to address key-color spill; judge the result in the preview rather than relying on a universal setting.
OBS documents the controls, but not a preset that works for every camera, backdrop, or lighting setup. Tune them for the recording in front of you.

Use Clipchamp to add the effect on an editing timeline
Clipchamp is a better fit if you want to assemble and edit footage after recording rather than key a source inside a recording scene. Microsoft describes its green-screen, or chroma-key, effect as removing green, red, or blue colors from footage and replacing them with another video or image. Its workflow is an editing effect, not a live-scene setup. (Clipchamp green-screen feature)
Apply the green-screen effect
- Open a Clipchamp project and add the keyed footage and the video or image you want to use as the replacement background.
- Place the screen footage on an upper timeline layer and the replacement video or image beneath it.
- Select the screen footage and apply the green-screen effect.
- Choose the screen color—green, blue, or red—and adjust the threshold slider while previewing the composite.
- Review the full edit, then export it using the resolution and account entitlements available to you.
What the free plan includes
Microsoft’s product page says all users can save in 1080p. It also describes a limited selection of green-screen stock footage and templates for free users, with all green-screen stock and templates requiring an upgrade. Those are separate things: an effect workflow is documented, but you should not assume every stock asset or template is included free. Clipchamp’s browser and Windows app availability, and access connected to Microsoft 365 Personal or Family accounts, can depend on account type and may change. Check the current Clipchamp plan details before relying on a particular entitlement.

Prepare the backdrop and lighting
You do not necessarily need to buy a green screen. Microsoft says the background can be green, red, or blue material, or a painted wall. A suitable existing surface may be enough; an optional green-screen backdrop or fabric is only worth considering if you lack a usable surface.
- Use a smooth surface: avoid creases and folds that create uneven patches.
- Light the backdrop generously and avoid shadows across it.
- Preview the actual recording in your chosen app and adjust the key controls for the resulting footage.
These setup points matter because both workflows remove a chosen color from the recorded image. A consistent backdrop makes it easier to tune the effect, but neither vendor documentation nor the available feature descriptions establish a universal lighting arrangement or guaranteed result.

Choose by workflow, not an unverified quality ranking
- Choose OBS if you want the green-screen effect applied in a scene as part of a recording or live-production setup, and you want documented controls for similarity, smoothness, and spill reduction.
- Choose Clipchamp if you prefer a timeline editor where the keyed footage sits above the replacement background and you adjust a threshold before exporting.
- Check your access first if Clipchamp stock footage, templates, or an account-linked entitlement is important to your project.
No controlled comparison establishes chroma-key quality, hardware performance, or ease of use for these two products. Try a short clip with your own backdrop before committing a full production to either workflow.
