How to Manage Geofencing Permissions in Windows 11

Manage Windows 11 location permissions, understand the geofencing notice, and learn what device, user, and app controls can—and cannot—block.

Windows 11 does not provide a separate master switch for geofencing. To manage it, open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Location, check which location controls are enabled, and review the page for the notice that an app is currently using geofencing. Geofencing is an app feature that depends on location access for that app.

Check Windows 11 location settings

  1. Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
  2. Check Location services. This device-wide setting controls whether Windows location services can be used; changing it may require administrator permission. If you are not an administrator, the control may not appear.
  3. Review Let apps access your location. This applies to the current user account. If device Location services is off, Windows will not let you turn app access on.
  4. Review the app-specific controls shown on the page. Where available, choose which listed apps can access precise location and check the recent-access information to see when location was last used.
  5. Look for the message “One or more of your apps are currently using geofencing”. It identifies current geofencing use; it is not a separate geofencing master switch.

Microsoft explains that an app can use geofencing to turn services on or off, or show information, when the device enters an area defined by the app. As Microsoft puts it, “An app can only use geofencing if location has been turned on for that app.” Microsoft Support: Windows location service and privacy.

Understand what each permission controls

Windows location settings work at different scopes. Knowing which one you changed helps explain what the setting does—and what it does not do.

Control Scope What it means for geofencing
Location services Device-wide; controlled by an administrator Turning it off blocks Windows and apps from accessing device location through Windows location services, subject to the exceptions Microsoft describes.
Let apps access your location Current user account Turning it off stops apps from receiving location through this Windows app-location setting for that user.
App-specific access and precision Individual listed apps, where controls are offered Allows you to manage which listed apps can access precise location. Approximate location is less accurate and may be obfuscated; precise location is the most accurate location the system can determine.

These settings are related but not interchangeable: the device control governs Windows location services, while the user and app controls narrow access within that framework. The options shown can vary by app and account permissions.

Know which apps Windows can control

Apps listed in Location settings

For apps that appear in the location privacy controls, use the available app-specific options to manage access and, where offered, precision. The recent-access details can help identify when location was last used.

Desktop apps

Desktop apps might not appear in Windows privacy lists, and they may access data differently from Store apps. Windows Settings generally does not offer the same per-app controls for desktop apps. Check the app’s own location or privacy settings and its privacy policy. Microsoft details this limitation in its Windows privacy settings that apps use guidance.

What turning location off cannot guarantee

Turning off Windows location services or app access controls access through Windows location services, but it does not guarantee that every app or service cannot estimate where the device is. Microsoft notes that some third-party services may infer location using other signals, including Bluetooth, an IP address, or cellular connectivity. Windows location controls also do not replace browser permissions: in Microsoft Edge, for example, websites have separate location permission prompts and controls. See Microsoft’s location service and privacy guidance.

If a setting is unavailable

  • The device-wide switch is missing: You may not have administrator rights. Ask the device administrator to review Location services.
  • A setting says it is managed by your organization: An organization policy may prevent you from changing it. Contact your IT administrator.
  • An app is not listed: It may be a desktop app, which might not appear in the privacy lists. Review its own settings and privacy policy.
  • You cannot enable app access: Check whether device Location services is off; Windows prevents the user-level app setting from being enabled in that case.

Microsoft’s App permissions page also identifies Location under Windows 11’s Privacy & security settings.
