There is no single agreed-upon best VPN for torrenting in 2026. TechRadar names ExpressVPN its overall pick and highlights PIA for port forwarding, while Top10VPN ranks PIA first and Proton VPN second. Those are editorial judgments, not a consensus. For your own choice, compare P2P access, server restrictions, privacy evidence, torrent-client safeguards, port forwarding, and the performance evidence available for each service.
This guide compares Proton VPN, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Private Internet Access (PIA), and Surfshark using those criteria. It distinguishes product documentation from reviewers’ rankings and performance claims; no independent download-speed test is presented here.

How to choose the best VPN for torrenting
A VPN can route peer traffic through its server so other peers see the VPN server’s IP rather than yours—but only if the torrent client is actually using the VPN connection. Proton VPN’s support documentation explains both the routing benefit and the risk of a client configured to use any network interface. A kill switch alone does not correct that misconfiguration. Proton VPN’s BitTorrent guidance
- P2P permission: Confirm that the provider permits peer-to-peer traffic and whether you must choose a designated P2P server.
- Privacy evidence: Look for a clearly scoped audit or assurance engagement, including who conducted it, when, and what it covered. An audit is evidence about a defined period and scope, not a guarantee of future behavior.
- Fail-safe routing: Use the VPN’s kill switch, and where your torrent client supports it, bind the client to the VPN network interface. Check the setting again after changing VPN apps or network interfaces.
- Port forwarding: It may help peers make inbound connections, but it needs configuration and opens a path for incoming connections. It does not guarantee faster downloads.
- Relevant performance data: General latency or a provider’s broad speed claim is not a torrent download-speed test. Compare like with like, and consider your distance to the server and the peers in a particular swarm.
- Ease and total cost: Check whether P2P works on all servers or only selected ones, then verify current plan terms and checkout pricing. Prices and offers change.
Proton VPN’s own selection guidance likewise emphasizes P2P permission, no-logs claims, speed, and security; that is product guidance from the provider, not a neutral industry standard. Proton VPN’s torrenting guide

Five VPNs for torrenting compared
| VPN | P2P access and setup | Port forwarding | Evidence and review context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proton VPN | Its documentation says dedicated P2P servers support BitTorrent and are available on paid plans. Follow the client-binding and server-selection instructions rather than assuming the torrent app is routed safely by default. | Available on paid plans according to Proton’s instructions; requires a P2P server and entering the active port in a compatible torrent client. The port can change after reconnecting. | Strong fit if you value documented P2P setup and port forwarding. Top10VPN ranks Proton second in its comparison; that is the publisher’s ranking, not a universal result. |
| NordVPN | The cited material does not establish whether P2P is restricted to particular servers. Check the provider’s current support documentation for the server and app behavior that applies to your plan. | Not stated in the cited evidence. | NordVPN says Deloitte Lithuania completed its sixth no-logs assurance engagement on December 12, 2025, covering systems assessed from November 10 to December 12. NordVPN describes it as point-in-time. Its 2026 account of an Artifact Security test reports performance measures, but not torrent download speeds. |
| ExpressVPN | TechRadar’s June 2026 guide says all ExpressVPN servers support P2P, making server choice simpler according to that review. | Not stated in the cited evidence; do not assume it offers port forwarding. | TechRadar ranks it first overall in its June 2026 guide. This is that publication’s editorial result, not an agreed winner across reviewers. |
| Private Internet Access (PIA) | TechRadar reports P2P support across its servers. | TechRadar reports that PIA offers port forwarding. | TechRadar ranks it third; Top10VPN ranks it first based on its own testing. The difference illustrates how priorities and methods affect rankings. |
| Surfshark | TechRadar includes it in its comparison and describes it as easy to use. The cited material does not specify P2P server restrictions. | Not stated in the cited evidence. | TechRadar places it fourth and describes it as fast and low-cost, while noting a lack of torrent-specific differentiators in its comparison. Check current feature details and checkout pricing before deciding. |
These entries are a practical comparison, not a claim that the five form a definitive market-wide ranking. Top10VPN says it tested 59 VPNs for torrenting; that is its reported test count, not a count of every available provider. The two specialist rankings disagree on the top choice, so weigh the feature that matters most to your setup rather than treating any one list as consensus. What the performance and audit figures do—and do not—show
NordVPN’s February 2026 announcement describes Deloitte Lithuania’s sixth no-logs assurance engagement. NordVPN says the assessment covered systems as they operated from November 10 through December 12, 2025, with the final report issued December 12. It calls the work a point-in-time assessment; it does not establish what the systems will do outside the period assessed. NordVPN’s audit announcement

NordVPN also reports results from a 2026 test by Artifact Security. Its post gives an average Windows route latency of 227.5 ms for ExpressVPN, 231.4 ms for Proton VPN, and 238.8 ms for NordVPN, and reports a best-route latency of 183 ms. These are latency figures from the provider’s account of that test—not measured torrent download speeds, nor a guarantee of performance on your route or in a particular swarm. Connecting to a VPN is not enough if your torrent application is still allowed to use another network interface. Proton’s support instructions explain how to bind compatible clients such as qBittorrent to the VPN interface. Exact labels and available controls vary by client and operating system, so use the relevant client documentation if your app differs.

Port forwarding can create an inbound path through a VPN firewall, which may help other peers connect to you. It is most relevant when you understand the setting and have a reason to improve inbound peer connectivity; it is not a promise of faster downloads in every swarm.

For Proton VPN, the documented setup requires a P2P server, a compatible client, and entering the currently active forwarded port in that client. Proton notes that the port can change when you reconnect. Because an open port permits incoming connections, use trusted software and avoid leaving ports open when they are not needed. Quick Recap
Best Value
- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
Which one should you shortlist?
- For documented port-forwarding setup: Start with Proton VPN if a paid plan and the required configuration suit you; PIA is another candidate because TechRadar reports it supports port forwarding.
- For broad server choice: TechRadar says every ExpressVPN server supports P2P, which may reduce the need to find a designated server.
- For a provider with a recent published assurance engagement: Review NordVPN’s stated audit period and scope, rather than treating “no logs” as an unconditional promise.
- For a different ranking perspective: Compare TechRadar’s and Top10VPN’s results, noting that they name different leaders.
- For any provider: Verify current plan limits, server rules, client-binding options, and price on the provider’s own site before subscribing.
