To control biometric verification when Chrome fills saved passwords, open Chrome > More > Settings > Passwords and Autofill > Autofill settings and turn Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info on or off. Chrome can verify with a fingerprint, face, or the device’s screen lock. First check which autofill provider Chrome is using: Google or another password manager.
Set fingerprint or face verification for Chrome password autofill
- Open Chrome and tap More > Settings.
- Under Passwords and Autofill, tap Autofill settings.
- Turn Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info on or off.
Google says this added verification is on by default unless you turn it off. When enabled, Chrome may request a fingerprint, face, or another screen-lock method before filling sensitive information. If your device does not support biometrics, Chrome uses its default screen lock instead. A fingerprint or face prompt therefore is not guaranteed just because this setting is enabled.

Check which autofill provider supplies your passwords
Chrome can fill credentials from Google or from another autofill service. If the wrong saved accounts appear, check the selected provider before changing biometric settings.

- Select Autofill with Google or Autofill using another service.

A third-party service must first be added in Android settings before Chrome can use it. Android menus vary by manufacturer and version; if the path differs, search your phone’s Settings for “password” or “autofill.” Google’s instructions do not provide an exhaustive menu map for every Android device.

- 0.5s Recognition: The USB Fingerprint Reader verifies fingerprints in 0.5 seconds, securely protecting your logins and data with an advanced fingerprint security device.
Understand Android Identity Check separately
Identity Check is an Android theft-protection feature, not the same control as Chrome’s sensitive-info autofill setting. On supported devices, when Identity Check is on and the phone is away from trusted places, it requires biometrics to access saved Google Password Manager passwords and passkeys, and for password autofill in apps other than Chrome.
To check for the setting, open Settings > Google > All services > Theft protection > Identity Check. If Identity Check is not listed, Google says the device does not support the feature. Google’s guidance also lists Chrome password and payment autofill among actions for which a PIN, pattern, or password can still be used.

Keep passkeys distinct from password autofill
A passkey lets you sign in without entering a password. Android uses the device’s screen unlock to create or complete a passkey sign-in; depending on the device, that can be a fingerprint, face scan, PIN, or another supported lock. Choose a passkey manager at Settings > Passwords, passkeys & accounts. This chooses where passkeys are managed; it does not switch Chrome’s sensitive-info autofill verification on or off. Not every app or website supports passkeys.
Do not confuse password autofill with payment-card autofill
Chrome documents a separate Verify it’s you setting under Payment methods for saved cards. It is distinct from the password autofill control above. Chrome also requires the card’s security code the first time a card is used.
Quick Recap

Troubleshoot a missing or unexpected verification prompt
- No fingerprint prompt: Check that Chrome’s Verify it’s you when filling sensitive info setting is on and that biometrics are enrolled. Chrome may use the screen lock instead.
- The wrong credentials appear: Review the provider selected under Chrome’s Autofill services and make sure the desired third-party service has been added in Android settings.
- An app still requires biometrics: On a supported device, check whether Identity Check is enabled and whether the phone is outside a trusted place. Its app autofill rule applies to Google Password Manager in apps other than Chrome.
- A card prompts for verification: Check Chrome’s separate setting under Payment methods, rather than the password autofill setting.
- Your menus do not match: Android labels and paths can vary by phone maker and version. Use Settings search for “password” or “autofill”; a precise device-specific path depends on the phone and Android version.
