How to Manage Claude Team Seats, Access, and Billing

Admins can manage members, but only the Primary Owner can provision new Claude Team seats. Learn how invitations, seat changes, renewals, billing, and cancellation work.

Claude Team separates membership administration from billing: Admins and above can manage members, but only the Primary Owner can add seats. Removing someone ends their access and frees a seat; it does not lower the subscription’s paid seat allocation. This guide explains who can do what, how to change seats, and when those changes affect the bill. Details and US prices below reflect Anthropic’s Help Center guidance checked October 7, 2026.

Who can manage Claude Team members, seats, and billing?

Claude Team uses distinct permissions for member administration and subscription billing. “Admins and above” means Admins, Owners, and the Primary Owner for the member-management actions described below; it does not mean that Admins can change billing settings or buy seats.

Action Who can do it
Invite or remove ordinary members; cancel their invitations Admin, Owner, or Primary Owner
Invite or remove Admins or Owners; modify roles Owner or Primary Owner
View or pay invoices; add or change billing methods Owner or Primary Owner
Provision new seats Primary Owner only
Reassign seat types through the documented Team workflow Admin or higher

All roles can create and modify chats and use projects. An organization can have only one Primary Owner, and that role consumes a plan license. Anthropic’s roles and permissions guide states: “Team and Enterprise organizations can only have one Primary Owner.”

How to invite members and manage pending invitations

  1. Open Organization settings > Members.
  2. Select the option to add a member, enter an address on an allowed organization domain, choose the seat type and role, and send the invitation. Use Bulk add for multiple invitations.
  3. Check the member list for pending invitations. Each pending invite occupies an available seat before the recipient accepts it.

Invitations expire after 21 days. If one expires, send it again. The current Team and Enterprise member-management guide also describes invite links, enabled by default for new Team organizations. Admins can disable a link, which invalidates existing links; regenerating a link does the same. Member-to-member invitations may also be available, with organization approval settings determining whether an admin must approve a request. Check the organization’s current settings before relying on either invite-link flow.

Check permitted email domains

For organizations not using domain capture, an Owner can review permitted domains at Organization settings > Identity and access, where domains can be added or removed. The account creator must use a business email address; public domains may be added as permitted domains for other members. Anthropic describes these requirements in its business email FAQ and Team getting-started guide.

What happens when you remove a member?

An Admin or higher can remove a person from Organization settings > Members. Their organization access ends immediately, and the occupied seat becomes available to assign to someone else. If the person is later added again using the same email address, their account history is maintained.

An Owner or Primary Owner cannot remove themself; another Owner or Primary Owner must remove them. Most importantly, removing a member does not reduce the subscription’s total purchased seats or create an immediate credit or refund. It frees a seat for reassignment.

How to reassign a seat or reduce the total allocation

Move a member between Standard and Premium

Within the existing allocation, an Admin or higher can reassign seat types. The billing result depends on the direction of the change:

  • Premium to Standard: The change takes effect at renewal, with no immediate prorated refund.
  • Standard to Premium: The price difference is prorated and charged immediately. If no Premium seat is available, the Primary Owner must purchase an additional Premium seat.
  • No seat assigned: The person remains in the organization but cannot use Claude until assigned a seat.

Lower the number of paid seats

  1. An Owner or Primary Owner opens Organization settings > Organization and access.
  2. Under Total seats, select Manage, change the count, review the billing impact, and confirm.

A decrease takes effect at the next renewal; submitting it does not produce a prorated refund. Pending invitations continue to count toward the seat limit, so account for them when planning a reduction. See Anthropic’s Team seat-management guide for the documented workflow.

What does Claude Team cost, and when are charges made?

Anthropic’s current Team overview lists these US prices before applicable taxes. Prices and tax treatment can vary by location, so use the current price shown on Claude’s upgrade page for your organization.

Seat type Billed monthly Billed annually
Standard $25 per member per month $20 per member per month
Premium $125 per member per month $100 per member per month

Team requires at least two members and supports up to 150 seats, according to Anthropic’s current Team plan overview. These are vendor-published prices, not a guarantee of the amount shown in every region; Anthropic notes that plans and prices may change.

The payment method is charged at the start of each billing cycle based on the subscription and member count then. Adding members or upgrading seats during a cycle triggers an immediate prorated charge. Removing a member does not trigger an immediate credit; the newly available seat can be reassigned. If usage credits are enabled, usage beyond included seat limits may add charges. Anthropic’s Team billing FAQ and usage and credit guidance explain those billing rules.

How to manage payment methods, invoices, and cancellation

Payment methods and invoices

An Owner or Primary Owner can update the payment method at Organization settings > Billing. Anthropic says Team accepts credit, debit, and prepaid cards; ACH bank transfers are not accepted at this time. Owners can view invoices in the Billing page’s Invoices section and download them from the associated Stripe page. Invoices are also emailed automatically to the organization’s billing email addresses.

Changing the billing email or adding invoice recipients requires a request to Support authorized by an Owner. See the billing FAQ for the current payment and invoice details.

Cancel the Team subscription

An Owner or Primary Owner can cancel at Organization settings > Billing. The organization will not be charged for the next cycle, but users retain access through the end of the current billing period. After cancellation, the settings interface no longer offers member removal; contact Support if a member must be removed while the plan is cancelled. Anthropic documents this in its Team cancellation guide.
