For adults who want a real account boundary while keeping eligible shared benefits, use separate adult accounts linked through Amazon Family, then review what Alexa and other household services share.
First decide whether to share one login or link separate accounts
A shared Amazon login is one account, not separate family profiles with private account histories. Amazon says purchase history and household settings are accessible in Your Account, so anyone who can use that login should be treated as potentially able to view its account information. Hiding or changing one type of history does not change that underlying access.

Amazon Family is a different arrangement: adults keep separate accounts and can share eligible Prime benefits and digital content. It creates an account boundary for each adult, but it is not a promise that every Amazon service or household activity stays separate. Amazon describes the service as a way to manage shared benefits and content while maintaining separate accounts. The details below reflect Amazon’s U.S. help information as accessed October 13, 2026; eligibility and terms can change.
| What matters | One shared login | Separate adult accounts linked through Amazon Family |
|---|---|---|
| Account-level purchase and browsing information | Kept in one account; a person with login access may be able to see account information. | Adults retain separate accounts. Amazon’s Family information describes benefit sharing, not unrestricted access to each other’s account histories. |
| Prime and digital content | Available through the shared account, subject to the account’s subscriptions and settings. | Eligible Prime benefits and digital content may be shared, subject to marketplace and benefit requirements. |
| Payment arrangements | Payment methods and account activity are part of the same account. | For newly created Families, Amazon describes one-way payment sharing from the organizer to the other adult for household verification. Associated adult payment methods are authorized for use in the Family context. |
| Alexa and household features | Alexa activity and features are associated with the account used on the device. | Linked adults may share Shopping Lists, compatible Alexa calls and messages, household-device use, and some notifications; Amazon Photos may appear on Echo devices with screens. |
What Amazon Family does and does not solve
Amazon’s current U.S. page allows one other adult, up to four teens subject to the page’s eligibility rules, and up to four children in a household. For Prime sharing, the adults must meet same-primary-residential-address and payment-verification requirements. Prime Video sharing has a U.S. billing-address requirement. Prime Video Ad Free requires an individual subscription and is not shared through Family. Two adult accounts sharing digital content through Family Library require payment-method sharing for verification.

Existing Families created before September 18, 2026 with two-way payment sharing continue under that arrangement until a member is added or removed; that change triggers a transition to one-way sharing. Check Amazon’s current Family terms for the marketplace and benefits you intend to use before linking accounts. These limits and requirements are specific to the U.S. information described here, not a guarantee that the same rules apply in every country.
Think of the choice as a trade-off rather than a single privacy switch. One login is simpler, but all account-level information sits together and a person who knows the credentials can access the account. Family allows adults to retain separate accounts, while still creating selected household connections: payment sharing may be part of verification, and Alexa or other shared services can expose particular activity. If the household needs both eligible benefits and separate adult account histories, Family is the documented option to examine; review its current terms before joining because a benefit being shareable does not mean every service is private.
The membership limits are household caps, not privacy guarantees. Amazon’s U.S. page describes one other adult and up to four teens and four children; the page’s own eligibility conditions apply, especially for teens. Do not assume that adding a person as a household member gives them a separate Amazon login automatically. The meaningful boundary for adults is separate accounts linked through Family, not multiple people taking turns on one set of credentials.
Reduce browsing-history and recommendation exposure
Amazon’s Privacy Notice directs customers to Your Browsing History to edit browsing history and to recommendation settings to remove items from recommendations. These controls address different things: changing what appears in browsing history or recommendations does not make the underlying shared login inaccessible to another user. Anyone still able to sign into that account should be considered able to inspect account information.
- Review browsing history: Sign in to the relevant Amazon account and open Your Browsing History. Use the history controls there to edit the browsing history associated with that account.
- Review recommendations: Open Amazon’s recommendation settings and remove items you do not want used in recommendations, where the relevant controls are available.
- For browsing that should not be linked to an account: Amazon says to sign out and block cookies in the browser. This is not a convenient replacement for a separate account: Amazon warns that blocking cookies can interfere with the cart, checkout, and sign-in functions.
- On a shared computer: Sign out when finished and use a unique Amazon password. Signing out protects the account from the next person using that browser session; it does not conceal information from another person who knows the shared account credentials.
If the goal is to keep adult purchase and browsing activity apart, changing history controls is not an equivalent substitute for separate adult accounts. Those controls affect display, personalization, or account linking for browsing; they do not revoke another person’s access to a shared login.
It helps to separate three goals that are often bundled together. Editing browsing history addresses what history is displayed. Removing items from recommendations addresses personalization. Signing out and blocking cookies is Amazon’s suggested way to browse without linking browsing history to the account, but the cookie change can disrupt core shopping functions. None of those steps creates a separate purchase account or changes who can sign back into the shared account.

Amazon’s Privacy Notice also identifies purchase history, household settings, payment options, and profile information as information in Your Account. That is why a browsing-history change should not be treated as a way to hide an order or account details. When multiple people share the same login, ask whether the objective is to reduce recommendations, prevent the next computer user from inheriting a signed-in session, or establish separation between adults. Those are different problems and require different controls.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReview Alexa recordings, requests, and linked-account sharing
Manage voice recordings and activity
Alexa has its own privacy controls. In the Alexa app, go to More > Alexa Privacy > Manage Your Alexa Data to review history and recording controls. Amazon says deleting voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests removes those items from its cloud, but other interaction records may remain. Examples include attachments, information supplied during an interaction, actions Alexa took, products searched for, and other information related to the request. Some information may also be needed for functions such as reminders or orders, so deleting recordings should not be read as deleting every trace of an interaction.
In practical terms, use this menu to review Alexa data associated with the account and manage the specific recording or request controls available there. Do not assume that deleting a recording erases every related detail or action: Amazon distinguishes the recordings, transcripts, and typed requests from other records connected with an interaction. For example, the record of an action Alexa took or a product searched for may be separate from the audio or transcript itself. The available controls concern Alexa data; they do not change the account history or account access described above.
Understand what Family-linked Alexa use can share
When adults link accounts through Amazon Family, Amazon says members may use compatible Alexa devices and household devices. The linked experience can include shared Amazon Shopping Lists, calls and messages between linked accounts on compatible devices, and Amazon Photos displayed on Echo devices with screens. Alexa Profiles remain associated with the Amazon account on which they were created; creating or using a profile is not the same as creating a separate Amazon account.
Amazon also says payment methods associated with an adult account are authorized for use in the Family context. If that implication is not acceptable for your household, review the Family arrangement and payment-sharing terms before linking accounts rather than assuming the Alexa settings alone will isolate purchases or payments.
These are separate sharing paths, so review each one according to what the household wants. A shared Shopping List is not the same as a call or message between linked accounts, and neither is the same as Photos appearing on a screen-enabled Echo. Turning off notifications may reduce alerts but does not, by itself, turn off the list, compatible communications, device access, or photo visibility. Likewise, Alexa Profiles remain attached to the Amazon account where created; choosing a profile should not be mistaken for a second adult account with its own private account history.

Turn off linked-account notifications
- Open the Alexa app and go to Settings > Notifications > Notifications Preferences.
- Turn off Received from Linked Accounts to reduce notifications arriving from linked accounts.
- Turn off Send to Linked Accounts to reduce notifications sent to linked accounts.
These toggles concern notifications. They do not undo other Family sharing such as Shopping Lists, compatible calls and messages, or household-device access.
Check both directions rather than assuming one switch covers all alerts: Received from Linked Accounts concerns notifications coming to the account, while Send to Linked Accounts concerns notifications sent out. If a household wants to stop only one direction, adjust that corresponding setting. These preferences do not replace reviewing the underlying linked features that can generate shared activity.
Limit access to a shared Amazon Photos group
For an Amazon Photos group, the specific control Amazon documents is Link sharing. With link sharing off, Amazon says access is limited to the group owner and people invited to the group. Only the owner can remove or block group members, so an invited member cannot use this control to remove someone else.
In the Amazon Photos mobile app
- Open Sharing and select the group.
- Open the group’s information.
- Review members and, if you own the group, add, remove, or block members as needed.
- Switch off Link sharing to limit access to the owner and invited people.
On the Amazon Photos website
- Open Sharing and select the group.
- Open Settings.
- In the Privacy tab, switch off Link sharing.
Check who is invited as well as whether link sharing is on: turning off a link restricts access to invited people, but it does not remove those invitees from the group.
That last distinction matters when a group has been shared widely. Switching off link sharing limits access to the owner and invited members, but invited people remain members until the owner removes or blocks them. If you are not the owner, you can review what access control Amazon provides, but only the owner can manage membership in this way. Review the member list as well as the link setting when tightening a group’s access.
Do not assume archiving an order makes it private
Amazon’s Privacy Notice identifies purchase history as information available in Your Account. The current evidence here does not establish whether an archived order is hidden from another person using the same login, so do not rely on order archiving as a privacy boundary. If an order needs to be private from another account user, the dependable decision is to avoid putting that purchase in an account they can access; history controls cannot change who has the credentials.

The key question is not whether an order has been moved out of a default view, but whether another person can access the Amazon account where the purchase was made. The documented account-level fact is that purchase history is accessible in Your Account. Without confirmation that a particular display control changes another user’s access, treat the shared login as shared visibility and plan accordingly.

A practical setup for a household
- Give each adult a separate Amazon account if one person’s purchase or browsing history should not sit in the same account as another’s.
- Check Amazon Family eligibility and terms for your marketplace, address, payment verification, and the specific Prime or digital benefits you want to share.
- Choose deliberately whether to link accounts after reviewing the payment-sharing model and household features, including Shopping Lists, Alexa communications, notifications, and screen-enabled Echo photo visibility.
- Review each service separately: use Your Browsing History and recommendation settings for browsing and personalization; Manage Your Alexa Data for Alexa history; notification preferences for linked-account alerts; and Link sharing and membership controls for Photos groups.
- Secure every login: use a unique password and sign out on shared computers. If other household members know the password for one account, account-level privacy controls cannot make that account private from them.
Amazon’s device terms also say that the account holder accepts terms on behalf of household members and others using devices or services under the account. Treat shared devices and linked services as household arrangements with their own data flows, not simply as screens attached to an otherwise private account.
Before changing anything, make a short inventory: which adults sign in to the Amazon account, which benefits the household wants to share, which Alexa devices are linked, whether lists or calls are used across accounts, and whether any Echo has a screen that can display Photos. That makes it easier to choose between continuing with one shared login and linking separate adult accounts, then to check the right service controls. Revisit the settings if people are added or removed from Family, because payment-sharing arrangements may change when membership changes.
Finally, keep expectations specific. Separate adult accounts create a meaningful account-level boundary; Alexa, linked-account notifications, device access, payment verification, and Photos groups each have their own sharing behavior. Browsing controls, Alexa deletion options, and Photos link settings can reduce particular forms of visibility, but none should be treated as a universal private mode for every Amazon service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I hide my Amazon browsing history from my family?
Use Your Browsing History to edit the history associated with the account and recommendation settings to remove items from recommendations. These controls do not prevent someone with the shared login from accessing account information. Amazon says you can browse without linking history to an account by signing out and blocking cookies, but warns that this can interfere with the cart, checkout, and sign-in.

Best Value
Can someone on my Amazon account see my orders?
Amazon says purchase history is accessible in Your Account. Treat anyone who can sign in to the same account as potentially able to view its account information. Do not rely on archiving an order as a privacy measure; the available information does not establish that it hides an order from another user of the same login.
How do I stop Alexa from sharing my lists or notifications?
For linked-account notifications, open the Alexa app and go to Settings > Notifications > Notifications Preferences, then turn off Received from Linked Accounts and/or Send to Linked Accounts. Those switches address notifications, not shared Shopping Lists, compatible calls and messages, or household-device access. Review the linked features separately if you want to change those arrangements.
Does deleting Alexa recordings delete everything Alexa knows about a request?
No. Amazon says deleting voice recordings, transcripts, and typed requests removes those items from its cloud, but other interaction records may remain. These can include attachments, information supplied, actions Alexa took, products searched for, and other request-related information.

How do I keep an Amazon Photos group from being accessible through a link?
In the mobile app, open Sharing, select the group, open its information, and switch off Link sharing. On the website, open Sharing, select the group, go to Settings > Privacy, and switch it off. Amazon says only the owner and invited people can then access group photos. Only the group owner can remove or block members.
The Bottom Line
A shared Amazon login means shared account-level access: history controls and Alexa or Photos settings can limit specific kinds of exposure, but they do not hide the account from someone who can sign in. For adult separation with eligible shared benefits, consider separate accounts linked through Amazon Family, and review its payment, Alexa, notification, device, and Photos-sharing implications before joining.
