Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThere is no single export setting that turns an Adobe project into a fully editable file in every free design app. Keep the original Adobe file as your master, make a separate handoff copy in a format suited to the kind of content and the next app, then open that copy in the destination and check what survived. For vector artwork, SVG is usually the first format to try in Inkscape; for a page intended mainly to look right, PDF is often more appropriate; and for Photoshop or InDesign projects, the right choice depends on whether you need editable layers, page layout, or just the image or text.
Choose the handoff by what you need to preserve
“Export” can mean different things: preserving editable paths, carrying a layered image into another editor, delivering a page that looks consistent, or extracting text for reuse. Those outcomes require different formats. A file that opens is not necessarily a file that retains the Adobe project’s full structure, effects, fonts, links, or behavior.

First save the native Adobe project and leave it untouched. Then make an export or interchange copy for the receiving app. Adobe recommends keeping Illustrator artwork in AI while work is in progress and exporting the needed delivery or exchange format afterward (Adobe’s Illustrator save guidance). The same principle is useful for Photoshop and InDesign: treat the original PSD, PSB, or INDD as the master, not the converted copy.
Before choosing a format, answer two questions: does the recipient need to keep editing the project, or only use its finished appearance? And what kind of content is most important—vector paths, raster pixels, a multipage layout, or the story text? A vector export may keep shapes scalable but change the way an effect looks; a raster export can preserve the intended appearance while removing the ability to edit individual objects. A PDF can be useful for delivery without being a convenient working file.

| What you want next | Format to try | What it preserves—and what it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Continue editing vector artwork | SVG | Maintains vector artwork for an SVG-capable app such as Inkscape, but may not reproduce every Adobe-specific feature or effect. |
| Share or output a page | Useful for page delivery and visual presentation. It is not automatically a lossless, fully editable interchange file. | |
| Deliver a rendered image | PNG or JPEG | Provides pixels rather than a complete vector or layered project. PNG supports transparency and lossless compression; JPEG is lossy. |
| Move Photoshop work to another image editor | PSD or PSB, tested in the receiving app | GIMP documents support for these formats, but that does not guarantee that every layer feature or effect will transfer intact. |
| Reuse InDesign story text | RTF, plain text, or Adobe Tagged Text | Text formats are for copy, not a complete page-layout handoff. Plain text drops character formatting; Tagged Text is documented for retaining formatting. |
| Attempt to move an InDesign layout | IDML | Adobe documents IDML as a cross-version exchange format; support and fidelity in a particular free layout app must be checked separately. |
No format wins on every measure. Decide whether visual fidelity or continued editing matters more, whether the project is vector or raster, whether it has multiple pages, and how important layers, text, effects, transparency, and linked assets are. The destination app and its version matter as much as the file extension.
There is also a practical difference between an interchange file and a delivery file. An interchange file is meant to help move content between applications, but it can still be interpreted differently by each one. A delivery file is made for viewing, placing, or printing and may intentionally flatten or simplify the work. Choose the outcome before exporting so you do not mistake a good-looking preview for an editable project.
Illustrator: export vectors for Inkscape or another vector app
For a project whose paths and shapes should remain editable, make an SVG copy first. Inkscape’s primary format is SVG, and its documentation describes importing and exporting SVG as well as working with some Adobe Illustrator and PDF content (Inkscape’s supported-formats overview). That makes SVG the practical first handoff to test—not a guarantee that every Illustrator feature has an equivalent.
If the recipient asks, “What format should I export from Illustrator so I can edit it?”, SVG is a sensible first answer when the destination is Inkscape or another SVG-capable vector editor. It keeps the handoff in a vector format, but it does not turn Illustrator-only features into universally supported features. If the recipient only needs to place the design in a document or publish it, a PDF or rendered image may be a better fit than a file intended for object-by-object editing.
Save an SVG copy
- Preserve the AI master. Save the working file as an
.aidocument before preparing a handoff. - Choose the export route. In Illustrator, use File > Export > Export As to create a format copy. Adobe also documents File > Export > Export for Screens for exporting artboards or assets in batches (Illustrator export guidance; Export for Screens guidance).
- Select SVG and export the intended artboard. Illustrator’s standard SVG save flow exports the active artboard. If you need multiple artboards or a batch of assets, use Export for Screens or explicitly select the artboards rather than assuming a single export includes them all.
- Open the SVG in the receiving app. Inspect it there instead of judging success only by the appearance in Illustrator or a browser preview.
For a batch of screen graphics, Export for Screens is useful because it supports multiple artboards or assets and offers several output choices. Adobe lists PNG, JPEG, SVG, PDF, WebP, AI, EPS, and TIFF among its options. Choose the output format separately for each use: a PNG preview and an SVG intended for further vector editing serve different purposes, even if they originate from the same artboard. If the project contains several artboards, verify that each intended one was selected and exported.
Check text, gradients, transparency, masks, effects, and placed images. Inkscape’s Illustrator-user documentation warns that some AI and PDF content has limitations: gradient meshes may be approximated, and transparency modes may not behave identically (Inkscape’s Illustrator-user guide). If a particular effect is essential, compare the handoff against the AI master and decide whether to simplify that effect, keep the design in Illustrator, or deliver a visual-only PDF or image instead.
Text is worth checking even when the lettering looks correct at first glance. Look for substitutions, changed line breaks, and text that no longer fits its original box. Also check whether placed images are present and whether their crop and scale still look right. If text or a specific effect must remain editable, test those exact elements in the receiving app rather than relying on a simpler test file.

PDF is often the better handoff when the receiver needs to view, print, or place the design as a page or graphic, rather than continue editing every path. In Illustrator’s PDF save options, Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities retains Illustrator data in the saved PDF. That can help when the file may return to Illustrator, but it does not mean another app can interpret all of that embedded information or recreate Illustrator’s effects. Adobe explains the save options in its artwork-saving documentation.

Do not choose PDF solely because it seems more universal. It can preserve a page’s appearance while still being awkward to edit as native objects in the destination app. Open the PDF in the intended software and inspect the actual objects and text if continued editing is a requirement.
Think of the Illustrator editing-capabilities option as a way to retain Illustrator data inside the PDF, not as a setting that makes every external program behave like Illustrator. If the receiver needs only a dependable visual reference, PDF may be suitable. If they need to alter paths, colors, or text in their own vector editor, export and test SVG instead. When the PDF is the chosen delivery, confirm the page or artboard dimensions and check the result in the software that will actually use it.
Use PNG or JPEG when you need a rendered asset
For an image-first handoff—such as a preview, web graphic, or placed illustration—export PNG or JPEG. PNG supports transparency and lossless compression; JPEG compresses with loss of image data and is commonly suited to photographic output. Neither carries a complete editable vector project. Adobe lists PNG, JPEG, SVG, PDF, and other export choices in its Illustrator export documentation.

There is no single ideal resolution for every use. The appropriate output depends on where the image will be used and the receiving party’s requirements. For print production, follow the printer’s specifications rather than relying on a universal preset.
Before sending a PNG, confirm whether the receiving workflow expects a transparent background or a solid one. Transparency is useful for placing an illustration over another background; it is irrelevant or undesirable if the receiver expects a complete rectangular image. JPEG does not preserve transparency and is lossy, so it is not the right choice when transparent pixels or repeated editing of the exported image matter. In either case, remember that the exported pixels no longer contain the Illustrator paths.
Photoshop: move an image project to GIMP carefully
GIMP’s developer documentation covers PSD and PSB among its image file formats, so those are reasonable formats to test when the next step is image editing (GIMP’s image-format documentation). The documentation does not establish that every Photoshop feature, layer effect, or other project detail will survive unchanged. Treat the handoff as a compatibility check, not a promise of feature parity.
If someone asks, “Can GIMP open my Photoshop project?”, the practical answer is to try a copy of the PSD or PSB in the installed version of GIMP and inspect the parts that matter. File-format support tells you that the format is relevant; it does not prove that every document-specific feature will be retained. For a valuable or complex project, test one representative file before converting a batch, and keep the source untouched so you can return to it if the result is incomplete.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTest the layered file before committing
- Keep the source. Preserve the original PSD or PSB, then make a separate copy for testing or delivery.
- Open the copy in GIMP. Confirm that it opens without an error or warning that changes what you need.
- Compare the structure and appearance. Check representative layer visibility, the composite appearance, and any effects or elements important to the job. If the project is large, test a representative file before converting a batch.
- Choose a different handoff if the required structure is missing. If the recipient only needs the finished image, export a flattened PNG or JPEG from Photoshop rather than implying that a flattened image is still a layered project.
For the comparison, do not check only the initial composite. Toggle representative layers to see whether they remain individually available, and look at areas where effects or transparency affect the finished appearance. If a layer or effect is central to future editing, make that the focus of the test. A file that renders as expected but has lost a needed editing component may still be unsuitable for the recipient’s task.

GIMP can rasterize SVG, but rasterizing turns vector artwork into pixels. If the goal is to continue editing vector paths, use a vector application such as Inkscape rather than expecting an image editor to preserve SVG’s path-based editability (GIMP format documentation).
Choose a flattened export by image needs
Use PNG when transparency or lossless pixel storage matters; use JPEG when photographic content is appropriate for lossy compression. These are rendered-image deliveries, not substitutes for a PSD or PSB master. Keep the layered source if later changes may be needed.
A flattened image is often the cleanest handoff when the receiving person needs to place or view the finished result, not edit its construction. But flattening removes the separate layers and their editing relationships. If a recipient needs to adjust a particular element later, give them a tested layered file or a separate asset where possible rather than promising that a PNG or JPEG can serve as the editable project.

InDesign projects combine page geometry, typography, graphics, and often multiple pages. A PDF or image export is suitable when the next person needs the page output; a text export is better when the copy is what matters. Neither should be mistaken for a complete, universally editable replacement for an INDD document.
This distinction answers two common questions: “Can free design software open InDesign files?” and “How can I reuse text without transferring the whole layout?” For the first, IDML is worth testing as an exchange route, but actual support depends on the receiving app and version. For the second, export the story text in a format suited to the recipient instead of trying to move all of the page-layout structure.
Deliver pages as PDF or images
Retain the INDD master, then export a PDF for page delivery. Use JPEG or PNG when a raster image of a page, spread, or object is what the receiver needs. Adobe’s InDesign export documentation covers pages, objects, and text, including page-image export options (InDesign export guidance). A raster page image is useful for a preview or visual placement, but its text and objects are no longer independently editable.
Choose a page output according to how it will be used. If the document must remain readable as a page or multipage file, use a PDF handoff. If someone needs a single visual preview or a page image to place elsewhere, JPEG or PNG may be more appropriate. An image export is not a substitute for a multipage editable layout: it represents the exported page or object as pixels. Check the page count, dimensions, and orientation in the resulting file.

Export story text for editing or reuse
If the recipient mainly needs the words, export the story as RTF or another text format. Plain text removes character formatting. Adobe documents Tagged Text as an option in the text-export workflow for retaining formatting (InDesign export guidance). Choose based on the receiving workflow: plain copy for clean reuse, RTF for formatted text exchange, or Tagged Text when retaining formatting is important and the recipient can work with it.

Text export is deliberately narrower than layout conversion. It helps separate copy from InDesign’s page geometry, but it does not recreate the pages, placed graphics, or complete typography of the INDD file. If the exact visual design matters, provide a page-output file as well as text where appropriate. If the copy alone matters, choose a text format the recipient can use and tell them that plain text does not retain character formatting.
Try IDML only as a tested layout exchange
Adobe lists IDML as an interchange format for cross-version exchange (InDesign supported file formats). That makes IDML a possible experiment when moving layout content, but Adobe’s statement about cross-version exchange does not establish perfect conversion into any specific free page-layout program.
An older Scribus 1.5.2 data sheet lists IDML and IDMS among supported inputs (Scribus 1.5.2 data sheet). That version-specific listing is not a current compatibility guarantee. Check the documentation for the Scribus version actually installed and test an IDML copy of the project. Review page dimensions, text flow, fonts, placed graphics, and page breaks before relying on the converted layout.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a copy of the IDML file for the trial, then open it in the actual free layout app and inspect more than the first page. Check whether text still flows as intended across the document, whether page breaks remain sensible, and whether graphics are present. If the result needs extensive repair or a critical element is missing, use a PDF for visual delivery and a separate text export for copy rather than treating the converted layout as a complete replacement.

Prepare a safe copy
- Save the original Adobe project in its native format and export a separate copy.
- Choose the format based on the recipient’s task: editing vectors, editing pixels, delivering pages, or reusing text.
- For batch asset or artboard output in Illustrator, use Export for Screens; Adobe lists options including PNG, JPEG, SVG, PDF, WebP, AI, EPS, and TIFF (Export for Screens guidance).
- If saving a PDF for possible return to Illustrator, review Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities. Do not treat that setting as a guarantee for external applications.
Keep the handoff clearly separate from the master. A simple naming convention such as a project name plus the destination format can help distinguish the test copy from the working Adobe file. Do not overwrite the native source when trying a new format or a revised export setting; keeping both makes it possible to compare alternatives and redo the handoff without reconstructing the project.
Inspect the exported file in the destination app
Opening the file in the receiving software is the only useful way to confirm how that app handled the handoff. Check the elements that could materially change the result:
- Text and fonts: look for substitutions, changed line breaks, and text wrapping.
- Transparency and color: check transparent areas, blending, and visible color shifts.
- Gradients, masks, and effects: compare complex effects against the Adobe original, especially where the destination app documents limitations.
- Images and links: confirm placed images are present and appear at the intended scale and crop.
- Page or artboard geometry: verify dimensions, orientation, page count, and which artboards or spreads were exported.
- Editability: confirm that the paths, layers, text, or page objects you need are actually editable—not merely visible in a flattened preview.
These checks are useful even when the file opens without an error. A missing placed image, an unexpected page break, a changed line wrap, or a flattened object can affect the project in ways that a quick glance at a preview will not reveal. Compare the exported file against the Adobe master at the same scale where possible, and pay particular attention to the features the receiver will need to change.
These are practical checks, not a guarantee that a particular project will convert cleanly. Color-management and print-ready settings depend on the printer or receiving party; the available format guidance does not establish one universal setting for every app, workflow, or output device. Ask the production provider for its specifications when a file is headed to print.
Best Value
How to decide when a conversion is not good enough
Judge the exported copy against the job’s essential requirements, not just whether it opens. If the receiving app changes a nonessential effect but all required paths and text remain editable, simplifying that effect may be an acceptable compromise. If the artwork’s appearance must match exactly, use a visual-delivery format and keep the native master for future edits. If the receiving app loses a critical layer, font, path, or page relationship, do not represent the converted file as a complete editable project.
When a file fails inspection, return to the preserved source and change one variable at a time: export a different format, simplify unsupported effects, or deliver separate assets and text where that better fits the receiving workflow. Reopen and inspect each revised copy in the target app. This avoids overwriting the source and makes it clear whether the problem came from the chosen format or from a feature the destination software handles differently.
When deciding whether to accept a compromise, start with the recipient’s actual task. Someone who only needs to view a design may be well served by a PDF or image even if the underlying objects are not editable. Someone expected to revise text, adjust paths, or change layers needs those elements to survive as editable content. Be explicit about what the handoff contains so that a visual copy is not mistaken for a complete working file.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I export an Illustrator file to Inkscape?
Keep the AI master, then make an SVG copy in Illustrator and open that copy in Inkscape. Check text, gradients, transparency, masks, effects, and placed images; some Illustrator features may be approximated or behave differently. Use Export for Screens or select the intended artboards if you need a batch rather than just the active artboard.
Can I open an AI file without Illustrator?
Inkscape documents support for some Adobe Illustrator content, but opening a file does not guarantee that every feature will transfer as editable content or look identical. For a more deliberate handoff, preserve the AI original and test an exported SVG or PDF in the target app.
What format should I export from Illustrator so I can edit it?
For continued vector editing in an SVG-capable program such as Inkscape, SVG is usually the first format to try. PDF may be better for visual or page delivery, while PNG and JPEG are rendered images and do not preserve the full vector project. Inspect the exported file in the receiving app before relying on it.
Can free design software open InDesign files?
IDML is an Adobe-documented cross-version exchange format, but that does not promise perfect conversion into a particular free layout app. Test an IDML copy in the version you have installed and inspect page dimensions, text flow, fonts, graphics, and page breaks. A PDF is a safer choice when the recipient mainly needs to view or print the pages.
How do I convert an Adobe project without losing quality?
There is no format that preserves every kind of project structure and behavior across all apps. Keep the native master, choose a handoff for the intended task, and inspect it in the destination. For appearance-first output, use a suitable PDF or image export; for editing, test an interchange format and verify the specific paths, layers, text, and effects you need.
Should I use PNG or JPEG for an export?
Use PNG when transparency or lossless pixel storage matters. Use JPEG when photographic output is suitable for lossy compression and transparency is not needed. Both are rendered-image formats, so neither preserves the full vector or layered project.
Does Preserve Illustrator Editing Capabilities make a PDF editable in other apps?
It retains Illustrator data in the saved PDF and can help if the document returns to Illustrator. It does not guarantee that another program can interpret all embedded Illustrator information or reproduce its effects. Open the PDF in the intended app and check whether the objects you need are actually editable.
The Bottom Line
Keep the Adobe project as the master, export a separate copy for the receiving app, and choose the format for the task: SVG for a vector-editing handoff, PDF for page or appearance delivery, PNG/JPEG for rendered pixels, PSD/PSB as a tested image-editor exchange, and RTF, Tagged Text, or IDML for the relevant InDesign text or layout workflow. Then inspect the actual file in the destination app. A file that opens is not automatically a complete, editable conversion.
