To reduce a prerecorded video’s file size for YouTube, export from the best available original as an MP4 using H.264, progressive scan, variable bitrate, and the recording’s frame rate. Then lower resolution or bitrate only as far as a representative export still looks acceptable. For a live stream, use YouTube’s separate live-encoder guidance: it calls for constant bitrate (CBR), and its recommended rate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. These settings can reduce the size of a file you upload or store, but they do not establish how a separate cloud archive compresses its copy.
First, identify which video you want to make smaller
“YouTube stream video” can mean a prerecorded video uploaded to YouTube, a live stream sent to YouTube, or a separate file kept in cloud storage. They are different workflows:

- Prerecorded upload: You control the export file before uploading. YouTube’s upload recommendations describe encoding settings for that file.
- Live stream: An encoder sends a real-time feed to YouTube. Use the live ingestion settings, not the prerecorded upload bitrate table.
- Separate cloud archive: The size depends on the file you put there and the archive service’s handling of it. YouTube’s guidance does not establish how another cloud service stores or compresses a copy.
YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers; that delivery process is not a guarantee about the size of your original upload or a separate archive. See YouTube Help’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Make a prerecorded YouTube upload smaller
Use a sensible export format
YouTube Help recommends MP4 with H.264 video, progressive scan, variable bitrate, and the same frame rate as the recording. Its upload guidance also specifies High Profile, 4:2:0 chroma subsampling, and placing the MP4 moov atom at the beginning of the file for Fast Start. Follow your editor or encoder’s equivalent controls where available; no particular commercial application is required.

Start from the best available original rather than repeatedly re-encoding an already compressed export. That is cautious workflow advice, not a quantified YouTube rule: repeated lossy exports can compound visible degradation, but the official settings page does not give a fixed loss figure.
Choose resolution and bitrate together

| Output resolution | Standard frame rates (24, 25, 30 fps) | High frame rates (48, 50, 60 fps) |
|---|---|---|
| 720p SDR | 5 Mbps | 7.5 Mbps |
| 1080p SDR | 8 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
For other resolutions, HDR, or additional settings, consult the current YouTube recommended upload encoding settings. Lowering resolution usually removes spatial detail; lowering bitrate gives the encoder less data to represent the picture. How noticeable either change is depends on the footage, especially fast movement, fine detail, gradients, and small text. Make a short export that includes those challenging parts and inspect it before encoding the full video.

YouTube says content should be encoded and uploaded at the frame rate at which it was recorded. Common rates include 24, 25, 30, 48, 50, and 60 fps. Its higher-frame-rate recommendations are greater than its standard-rate recommendations, so changing frame rate solely to shrink a file can alter motion as well as size.

For SDR, YouTube recommends BT.709 color space. Preserve correct source color metadata; changing bitrate alone will not fix incorrect color. YouTube may convert unsupported color spaces. See the full upload encoding guidance.
Do not add bars to force the picture shape
YouTube’s player adapts to the video’s aspect ratio and the viewer’s device. Avoid adding black bars or padding directly to the picture just to force a particular shape; YouTube says that can interfere with dynamic player sizing. See Video resolution & aspect ratios.

Set up a smaller-bitrate live stream correctly
For live ingestion, YouTube lists RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1, with support up to 60 fps. Its recommended bitrate depends on the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not treat these live values as predictions of archived-file size or substitute the upload table above.

These are YouTube Help live-ingestion recommendations accessed in 2026; the page does not show a publication date. Check its current live bitrate table for other combinations, rather than extrapolating from these examples. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.

- Check your upload connection. Run a speed test and choose a stream quality your connection can sustain. Leave headroom rather than setting the encoder at the connection’s measured maximum.
- Set the encoder for the selected live profile. Choose RTMP/RTMPS, a supported codec, resolution, and frame rate; set CBR and use YouTube’s bitrate recommendation for that exact combination.
- Set keyframes. Use a two-second keyframe frequency and do not exceed four seconds.
- Test representative content. Include the audio and movement expected during the event. Monitor stream health and adjust if the connection cannot reliably sustain the selected rate.
YouTube says it automatically transcodes a live stream into multiple output formats so viewers on different devices and networks can watch. That viewer delivery does not mean your source feed or separate archive will have a particular file size.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Keep the storage goal separate from the delivery goal
If the aim is to reduce a file stored outside YouTube, export a smaller version before placing that version in the archive, and retain the original if you may need to edit or remaster it. If the archive receives the original, lowering the YouTube upload export does not necessarily reduce the archived copy. YouTube’s upload and live help pages do not specify how a separate cloud-storage provider stores, transcodes, or charges for archived files.
If the aim is smoother playback for viewers, YouTube’s transcoding and adaptive player handle delivery formats and display sizing. You can control the upload file or live feed you supply, but the published guidance does not promise a particular playback result from a given export bitrate.

- The export is still too large: Check the output resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Test a lower resolution or bitrate on a representative segment, then inspect it before exporting the full video. There is no universal reduction percentage that applies to every source.
- The smaller export looks blocky or loses detail: The chosen rate may be too low for the motion, texture, or text in your footage. Compare a short sample at a higher bitrate or resolution rather than assuming the recommended figure guarantees acceptable results for every video.
- A live stream buffers or loses health: The connection may not sustain the configured upload rate. Recheck the speed test, lower the live profile to one supported by the connection, and test again with representative audio and motion.
- Only lower resolutions appear after upload: YouTube may still be processing higher-quality versions. Its upload troubleshooting guidance notes that new uploads can initially be available only at lower quality while processing continues. See Troubleshoot audio or video issues with uploads on YouTube.
- The player shows bars or sizing looks wrong: Check whether bars or padding were baked into the video. YouTube’s player adapts to aspect ratio; avoid adding padding solely to force a shape. See YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the real task is keeping prerecorded videos live on a YouTube channel 24/7, StreamNeo is a cloud service: upload a recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay powered on at home. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. It plays uploaded videos, not camera feeds, and streams to YouTube.
