Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Help Google find important pages through ordinary links, give it a clean sitemap of the URLs you prefer in Search, let it fetch the pages and resources it needs, and make duplicate and JavaScript-driven pages unambiguous. Then use Search Console and server logs to find access or processing problems. These steps make a site easier to discover and interpret; they do not guarantee crawling, indexing, ranking, or a particular timeline.
What crawling does—and what it does not do
Google Search works in stages. Google first discovers URLs and fetches their content. It then analyzes pages and may add them to its index. When someone searches, Google decides which indexed content to serve. A page can be discovered but not fetched, fetched but not indexed, or indexed without being selected for a particular query. Improving crawlability addresses access and discovery; it cannot compel Google to include a page or rank it.

Google Search Central describes the system this way: “Google Search is a fully-automated search engine that uses software known as web crawlers to explore the web regularly to find pages to add to our index.” The crawler’s automated process means there is no reliable button or submission that guarantees a page will be crawled immediately.

Think of the practical goal as removing avoidable obstacles: make each important page reachable, expose its preferred URL, allow the necessary fetching and rendering, and provide consistent signals about the page’s identity. This helps Google process the site; it does not replace useful, index-worthy content.

Make important pages reachable through links
Internal links are a primary way for Google to discover pages and understand how they relate to one another. Put links to important pages on pages Google can already find, such as the main navigation, category pages, or relevant articles. A page that is only accessible through a site search box, a form submission, or a script interaction may be much harder to discover than one with a normal link pointing to it.
Use crawlable links with meaningful text
Use an HTML anchor element with an href destination. For example, the basic structure is <a href="/guides/site-security/">site security guide</a>. The visible text should tell a person what the destination is about. “Read more” repeated across dozens of links gives less context than specific wording such as “site security guide.”
Google says it can generally crawl links reliably when they are expressed as anchor elements with an href. A clickable-looking element implemented only with a JavaScript event handler is not an equivalent substitute. Buttons are useful for actions such as submitting a form; use links for navigation to another URL.
Build a navigable page hierarchy
Organize the site so that a visitor can move from broad sections to relevant detail pages. Link related pages where the connection is useful, not just from a sitemap. This gives crawlers routes into the site and helps clarify which content belongs together. Avoid leaving valuable pages as isolated URLs that are known only to the people who manage the site.
Check navigation on mobile and desktop, and confirm that links lead to the intended final URL rather than a broken destination or an unnecessary chain of redirects. A site can have a sitemap and still have weak internal discovery if its important pages are not linked in the site itself.

Publish a sitemap that reflects the pages you want considered
A sitemap is a file that helps Google learn about URLs on a site. Treat it as a discovery aid and a preference signal, not an instruction: including a URL does not require Google to crawl it, ensure indexing, or improve its ranking by itself.
Keep the sitemap focused and accurate
- Include the absolute URLs of pages you prefer to appear in Search.
- Use the same preferred URL consistently in internal links, canonical annotations, and the sitemap.
- Keep the file updated as pages are added, removed, or moved.
- Provide accurate last-modified information when it is available; do not use a fabricated or routinely refreshed date.
- Do not add URLs that you intend to keep out of Search or URLs that merely duplicate a preferred page.
Google supports standard sitemap formats and does not state a preference among them. XML is versatile; a sitemap index or multiple sitemap files can help organize a large inventory. Each sitemap file is limited to 50 MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs. If the site exceeds either limit, split the inventory into multiple files and use an index as appropriate.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallAfter publishing or updating the file, submit it through Google Search Console. Re-submitting an unchanged sitemap repeatedly is not a substitute for improving links, access, or page quality. A sitemap tells Google where to look; it does not settle whether a URL should be indexed.
Check that Google can access pages and rendering resources
Access controls can prevent Google from fetching a page or the files needed to display it. Review the site’s robots.txt rules and make sure they do not unintentionally block important pages, CSS, JavaScript, images, or other resources needed to render those pages. A page whose text or layout depends on blocked resources may be more difficult for Google to interpret.
Use robots.txt for crawl access, not removal
robots.txt controls crawler access; it is not a dependable way to remove a URL from Google’s index. Blocking crawling does not itself establish that a URL should be absent from Search. Do not use a crawl restriction as if it were an indexing-removal mechanism. Make sure the directives express the access policy you actually intend.

Robots rules are scoped to a host, protocol, and port. A rule on one host or protocol should not be assumed to apply to every version of a site. When investigating a page that Google cannot fetch, check the exact URL and the relevant host configuration rather than relying on a rule inspected for a different site variant.
Investigate server and network failures
Successful crawling depends on Google being able to reach the server and receive a usable response. Look into network failures, server errors, and unexpected status codes when Search Console or logs show a fetch problem. Google may slow its crawling when a site’s server signals trouble, so trying to increase crawl activity before fixing reliability can be counterproductive.
Also check for unintended noindex directives. A page can be accessible to a crawler but explicitly marked not to be indexed. Review both the page-level signals and the HTTP response where relevant; fixing a robots rule alone will not correct a separate indexing directive.
Choose one preferred URL for each page
One page may be reachable through several URL variants—for example, alternate paths or versions of a URL with and without tracking parameters. When signals point to different versions, Google has to determine which one represents the page. Choose a preferred URL and align links, redirects, canonical annotations, and sitemap entries around it.
| Method | Signal strength | When it fits | What happens to the variant |
|---|---|---|---|
| Redirect | Google describes redirects as a stronger canonical signal than sitemap inclusion. | Use when an old or duplicate URL should be retired and visitors should move to the preferred URL. | The redirect sends visitors and crawlers to the destination. |
rel="canonical" |
Google describes canonical annotations as a stronger signal than sitemap inclusion. | Use when a duplicate or closely similar URL needs to remain accessible, but another URL is preferred for Search. | The alternate URL can remain available while indicating the preferred version. |
| Sitemap inclusion | Weaker preference signal than redirects or canonical annotations. | Use to include the preferred URLs you want considered for Search. | Including a preferred URL does not redirect or remove its variants. |
These methods can be combined where appropriate: redirect variants that should no longer be used, keep canonical annotations consistent for accessible duplicates, and list preferred URLs in the sitemap. Canonical signals guide Google but do not dictate its choice; Google may select a different canonical URL.

Before changing URL handling, identify which variants are actually duplicates and which represent meaningfully different pages. Redirecting distinct content to one URL can make the destination misleading to visitors and crawlers. For site-specific routing decisions, account for the platform and URL structure rather than applying a blanket rule.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Make JavaScript pages understandable
Google can render JavaScript, but relying on rendering does not remove the need for clear URLs, crawlable links, and consistent page signals. A single-page application should expose individual content pages at distinct URLs. If several screens share one address and change only after a script interaction, it is harder for a crawler—and a person sharing a link—to identify each screen as a separate destination.
Check the rendered page, not just the source template
Verify that the important page content is present after rendering and that Google can fetch the resources required to produce it. If the initial HTML is sparse, confirm that the rendered result contains the text and links visitors are meant to see. Ensure that navigation between content pages uses real anchor links with destinations rather than only client-side click handlers.
Keep titles and canonical signals aligned
Give each distinct page a descriptive title that reflects its content. Keep canonical declarations consistent between the original HTML and the rendered page. If the initial response points to one preferred URL but JavaScript changes the canonical to another, the conflicting information can make the page’s identity less clear.
Recommended Free Tools
Rendering and URL design solve different problems: rendering helps Google access content generated by scripts, while distinct URLs and consistent metadata identify which page that content belongs to. Check both when a JavaScript-driven page is missing from Search or appears under an unexpected URL.

Use Search Console and logs to find the specific obstacle
Search Console offers free diagnostics for checking how Google sees a site. Use the URL Inspection tool to investigate an individual important URL, and review the Page Indexing report for broader patterns. These checks can help distinguish an access problem from a URL that was fetched but not selected for indexing.
- Start with the exact preferred URL. Inspect the URL you intend to appear in Search, not a redirecting or parameterized variant by mistake.
- Review the URL Inspection result. Check whether Google can access the URL and whether the reported status points to a fetch, indexing, or canonical-selection issue.
- Compare patterns in Page Indexing. Look for groups of affected URLs that share a template, access rule, status code, or duplicate pattern rather than treating every URL as a separate mystery.
- Check server logs. Review requests attributed to Googlebot alongside response codes and times. Logs can show whether Google is reaching the server and whether failures coincide with particular paths or periods.
- Fix the underlying issue and recheck. Correct blocked resources, unintended directives, broken links, server errors, or conflicting canonical signals before requesting another inspection.
Search Console status and server logs answer different questions. Inspection and reports show Google’s view of URLs and indexing patterns; server logs show requests reaching the site. Together they can help isolate whether a problem lies in discovery, access, response reliability, or the page’s signals.
Troubleshoot by symptom
An important URL is unknown or not discovered
- Add a contextual internal link from a page that is already reachable.
- Confirm the link is an anchor with a valid
hrefto the preferred URL. - Include the preferred URL in the sitemap if it is meant to be considered for Search.
Google cannot fetch or render the page
- Check the exact URL’s host and protocol against the applicable
robots.txtrules. - Confirm that CSS, JavaScript, and other necessary resources are not unintentionally blocked.
- Investigate network failures, server errors, and unexpected response codes in Search Console and server logs.
The page is accessible but not indexed
- Check for unintended
noindexdirectives. - Check whether the URL duplicates another page and whether canonical signals agree.
- Verify that the page is represented by a distinct URL if it is a distinct screen in a JavaScript application.
Google selects an unexpected URL
- Use one preferred URL consistently in internal links and sitemap entries.
- Align canonical annotations, including those in the original HTML and rendered page.
- Redirect variants that should be retired; use a canonical annotation when an alternate URL must remain accessible.
Do not treat repeated submission as a fix when the underlying issue remains. A request to inspect a URL can help prompt a check, but it cannot promise indexing or establish a same-day schedule.

A practical maintenance checklist
- Important pages have clear internal links from pages that are themselves discoverable.
- Navigation uses anchor links with real destinations and useful visible text.
- The sitemap contains current preferred URLs, accurate modification information where available, and no unnecessary duplicate inventory.
- Sitemap files stay within 50 MB uncompressed and 50,000 URLs per file.
- Robots rules allow crawling of pages and resources needed for rendering.
- Canonical annotations, redirects, sitemap URLs, and internal links express a consistent preference.
- JavaScript content has distinct URLs where content represents distinct pages, and rendered titles and canonical signals remain coherent.
- Search Console reports and server logs are checked when important URLs cannot be fetched or indexed.
The exact implementation depends on a site’s CMS, framework, URL structure, access controls, and server behavior. Without inspecting a specific site, no universal setting can identify its particular crawl issue. The sequence above is a way to make the important pages easier to find and their signals easier to interpret, then diagnose what Google reports rather than assuming every unindexed URL has the same cause.
