What’s actually slowing this PC down?

You can reduce avoidable SSD wear, but no setting can guarantee a longer life or prevent sudden failure. The useful steps are straightforward: leave your operating system’s TRIM optimization enabled, avoid needless sustained writes, keep some free space, follow the drive maker’s health and firmware guidance, and maintain a separate backup.
How do I make my SSD last longer?
SSD flash has finite write endurance. One published measure is TBW, or total bytes written: Solidigm describes it as the amount of data that can be written over a drive’s life. Check the endurance rating for your exact model and capacity rather than relying on a generic lifespan estimate. Workload and model matter, and no single maintenance tweak guarantees extra years.

- Leave normal operating-system storage optimization enabled so supported drives can receive TRIM requests.
- Avoid generating large, repeated writes that serve no practical purpose.
- Do not keep the system volume completely full; follow the manufacturer’s instructions if you use explicit over-provisioning.
- Use the drive maker’s supported tools and guidance for health information and firmware.
- Keep an independent backup of important files.
Normal browsing, reading files, and routine operating-system activity are not reasons to panic. Microsoft notes in its server-cache guidance that reads do not significantly affect flash lifespan; that is not a promise that reads can never be involved in any device issue, but it does make read-reduction tweaks a poor target for ordinary users.
Does TRIM help SSD lifespan?
TRIM tells supported storage that logical sectors are no longer needed, allowing the storage system to manage those blocks. Deleting a file by itself does not necessarily tell the SSD that its underlying sectors are available. Microsoft’s Optimize-Volume documentation lists the default operation for an SSD with TRIM support as “-Retrim.” Microsoft also describes TRIM as a hint about sectors that are no longer needed in its TRIM and UNMAP guidance.
#1 Best Overall
- Get NVMe solid state performance with up to 1050MB/s read and 1000MB/s write speeds in a portable, high-capacity drive(1) (Based on internal testing; performance may be lower depending on host device & other factors. 1MB=1,000,000 bytes.)
- Up to 3-meter drop protection and IP65 water and dust resistance mean this tough drive can take a beating(3) (Previously rated for 2-meter drop protection and IP55 rating. Now qualified for the higher, stated specs.)
- Use the handy carabiner loop to secure it to your belt loop or backpack for extra peace of mind.
- Help keep private content private with the included password protection featuring 256‐bit AES hardware encryption.(3)
- Easily manage files and automatically free up space with the SanDisk Memory Zone app.(5). Non-Operating Temperature -20°C to 85°C
For a typical Windows setup, leave built-in drive optimization scheduled rather than installing a third-party “optimizer” or repeatedly forcing manual maintenance. Windows’ optimization behavior is media-aware. RAID, virtualized, external, or thin-provisioned storage can change how TRIM or UNMAP passes through, so consult the platform and drive documentation if your storage is configured that way; Microsoft discusses these considerations in its thin-provisioning guidance.
Should I defrag an SSD?
Do not schedule HDD-style manual defragmentation as an SSD-life hack. Microsoft’s SQL Server storage guidance says, “Defragmentation of solid-state media is therefore unnecessary.” The context is its discussion of solid-state media and SQL Server storage, but the practical point for a general PC user is not to treat an SSD like a spinning hard drive. Windows’ built-in optimization can perform retrim for supported SSDs instead of applying a blanket hard-drive routine.

Which write-heavy habits are worth changing?
Large repeated downloads, scratch files, build artifacts, surveillance recordings, database logs, or constant cache regeneration can add writes, depending on the workload. If one of those tasks is part of your normal work, choose storage rated for that workload and compare its published endurance rather than trying to eliminate necessary activity.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no supported universal write budget or number of years saved by moving a cache or disabling a feature. Do not turn off paging, hibernation, indexing, antivirus, browser caches, or system restore as a blanket lifespan strategy. These functions have performance, stability, or recovery roles, and the evidence does not establish that disabling them is worthwhile for typical users.

- Capacity Display Variance: 500GB external ssd often appears as around 465GB on Windows. MacOS can show full 500 GB capacity. This is binary calculation difference and doesn’t affect SSD hard drive actual physical storage
- 1050 MB/s Speed: Instantly access to your files with blazing-fast 10Gbps external SSD read up to 1050MB/s and write up to 1000MB/s. LED Light indicates USB SSD instant activity
- Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
- USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
- Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity
Likewise, do not disable write caching simply to reduce SSD wear. Windows normally caches file writes and flushes them on an operating-system schedule. Microsoft’s documentation on disabling write caching concerns transactional NTFS consistency conditions and warns of significant performance consequences; it is not an SSD-life recommendation. See Microsoft’s file caching documentation and Transactional NTFS deployment guidance.
How much free space should I leave?
Avoid running the system volume completely full, but do not assume there is one magic free-space percentage that every consumer should reserve. Samsung says over-provisioning—reserving unallocated space—can improve performance and lifespan for supported Samsung drives. That is model- and vendor-specific guidance, not a universal percentage. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions if you choose to configure over-provisioning.

- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
How do I check SSD health?
Use the drive manufacturer’s supported health and firmware information for your particular model. For example, Samsung Magician reports health and total usage for supported Samsung SSDs, but Samsung says the information depends on supported SMART attributes and that features vary by model. It is designed for Samsung products, not as a universal SSD utility. Check the maker’s own support pages for other drives.
Install a firmware update when the manufacturer recommends it for your model or a relevant issue. Before maintenance that could affect a drive, make sure important files are backed up. A health indicator or wear estimate is useful information, not a prediction that covers every possible failure mode.

When should you replace an SSD?
If health information or the manufacturer’s guidance indicates a problem, back up important data and assess the drive against its exact model specifications and warranty terms. When choosing a replacement, compare rated TBW, warranty terms, intended workload, interface and physical compatibility, and the manufacturer’s health and firmware support. The evidence here does not establish a universally best SSD or a consumer-wide lifespan figure; choose for the computer and workload rather than a generic rule.
