Start at Settings > Sound and Screen > Display Area Settings; Sony says the adjustment works only for some applications.
What the PS4 display-area setting changes
Aspect ratio is the proportional shape of an image. The PS4’s Display Area Settings adjust the game-screen area for supported applications so it can match the visible area of your TV. Sony’s guide does not describe this as a system-wide aspect-ratio selector or a control that changes every game and video. Sony’s Display Area Settings guide notes: “This setting is effective only for some applications.”

How to make the PS4 screen fit your TV
- From the PS4 home screen, open Settings.
- Choose Sound and Screen > Display Area Settings.
- Use the on-screen adjustment to fit the visible game area to your TV.
- Return to the game or application where you noticed the issue and check the result.
The adjustment may help if the edges of a supported game screen are cut off, but its effect can vary by application.

If the picture is still cropped or does not look right
Only one game or app is affected
Look in that game or app for its own display, screen, or safe-area setting. Such controls vary, and the available official documentation does not establish a universal menu path or guarantee that each title has one.

The PS4 interface and several apps are affected
Check your television’s picture-size or overscan controls. Menu names and options differ by TV, so use the television’s own instructions rather than assuming a particular label.
The image is stretched or has the wrong proportions
Display Area Settings are for fitting the game-screen area; they are not documented as a control for forcing a different aspect ratio. Check the picture-size settings on the TV and any relevant options in the affected game or app.

The screen is blank
Safe Mode’s Change Resolution option is a separate troubleshooting step: PlayStation says it sets the display to 480p on restart and may help when the screen is blank. It is not the first option to try for ordinary cropping or black borders. See PlayStation’s Safe Mode options.

Display Area Settings and Video Output Settings appear as separate entries in the PS4’s Sound and Screen menu; they are not interchangeable. Sony’s PS4 User’s Guide menu documentation lists them separately.

The PS4 connects to a screen over HDMI; PlayStation’s console setup instructions cover that connection. The documented display-area adjustment is a console setting, and the available guidance does not suggest buying another HDMI cable as a way to change image geometry.
