The Shure SM7B is a dynamic XLR option for speech that needs a preamp capable of at least 60 dB of gain. The RØDE NT1 is a cardioid condenser that RØDE explicitly lists for voice-over. The Audio-Technica AT2020 is a cardioid condenser; check whether a listing is the XLR model or a USB variant. Manufacturer specifications establish what these microphones are designed for, but do not prove which will sound best with your voice.
How to choose a voice-over microphone
Start with the conditions the microphone will work in. A microphone cannot make a noisy or reverberant room disappear, and a model’s type alone does not determine whether it will suit your voice. Compare the complete setup: microphone type, pickup pattern, connection, required preamp or interface, and accessories.

- Your room: All three models discussed here use a cardioid pattern. Cardioid mics favor sound from the front, but do not eliminate off-axis noise or room reverberation.
- Your recording chain: XLR microphones need a compatible XLR input, typically on an audio interface or preamp. The SM7B has a specific gain recommendation for voice-over use.
- Your voice and delivery: Specifications do not predict how a microphone will sound on every speaker. If possible, audition a model using your own voice, distance, and room.
- Your accessories: Plan for a suitable windscreen or pop filter where needed, as well as the cable and interface required by the chosen connection.
Three microphones to consider
| Model | Type and pattern | Connection | What the manufacturer says | Setup consideration |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shure SM7B | Dynamic, cardioid | XLR | Shure positions it for speech and professional audio. | For voice-over, Shure recommends a preamp with at least 60 dB of gain. Budget for a compatible preamp or interface. |
| RØDE NT1 | Condenser, tight cardioid | Check the exact model and generation | RØDE lists voice-over as an application and describes the microphone as having low self-noise. | NT1 product pages cover distinct generations and models. Verify the exact version before purchasing. |
| Audio-Technica AT2020 | Condenser, cardioid | Check the exact listing: XLR and USB variants exist | Audio-Technica says the cardioid pattern reduces pickup from the sides and rear. | Do not treat the XLR AT2020 and USB variants as interchangeable; confirm the connection you need. |
Shure SM7B: a dynamic XLR option for speech
Shure describes the SM7B as a dynamic, cardioid microphone for speech and professional audio. Its XLR connection means it belongs in an XLR recording chain, rather than plugging directly into a computer’s USB port. For voice-over, Shure advises selecting a preamp that provides at least 60 dB of gain. That requirement is part of the system cost and setup, not an optional detail to overlook.
Shure’s user guide recommends the standard windscreen for general voice and instrumental applications. See the SM7B product page and Shure user-guide resources for product and setup information.

RØDE NT1: a condenser with voice-over among its stated uses
RØDE explicitly lists voice-over as an NT1 application and describes its pickup as tight cardioid, with low self-noise. Its general microphone guidance also presents studio condensers such as the NT1 as suitable for studio recording and voice-overs. These are manufacturer descriptions, not independent comparative test results.
Be precise about generation: the NT1 product page and the NT1 Signature Series page refer to separate product pages. Check the exact model name and specifications on the listing you are considering. Audio-Technica AT2020: confirm XLR or USB before buying
Audio-Technica describes the AT2020 as a cardioid condenser microphone. The company says the pattern reduces pickup from the sides and rear, which can help focus on sound in front of the mic; it does not promise that background noise or room reflections will be removed. The AT2020 name appears on both XLR and USB models, so check the exact product page and connection before comparing listings.

What cardioid pickup does—and does not—do
A cardioid pattern is most sensitive toward the front of the microphone and less sensitive to sound arriving from the sides and rear. That directionality can be useful for voice-over when you position the mic between your mouth and less desirable sound sources. It is not noise cancellation: nearby sounds can still be recorded, and reflections from an untreated room can still affect the voice.
Use practical placement and room control alongside microphone choice. Keep the mic aimed toward your voice, speak consistently at a suitable distance, and reduce avoidable noise and reflections in the recording space. These steps are general setup advice; the manufacturer specifications do not establish a guaranteed result for a particular room.

Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm the connection. Determine whether the exact microphone is XLR or USB. For an XLR model, make sure you have an XLR cable and an interface or preamp with a compatible input.
- Check gain needs. If considering the SM7B for voice-over, Shure recommends a preamp providing at least 60 dB of gain.
- Plan for plosives and wind. Use the appropriate windscreen or pop filter for your setup. Shure recommends its standard windscreen for general voice applications with the SM7B.
- Test with your own voice. Record a short passage at the intended speaking distance and in the intended room. Compare intelligibility, room sound, and the amount of gain required rather than relying on a model name to predict the result.
Can the specifications identify the best-sounding microphone?
No. The cited manufacturer pages describe intended uses, connections, and pickup characteristics; they do not provide a controlled, head-to-head listening comparison that establishes a winner for all voices and rooms. Claims that one of these microphones delivers universally superior voice-over audio would go beyond those specifications. Treat the models as candidates, then audition them in your own setup when possible.
