To make an iPad mini last longer on today’s charge, check Settings > Battery first, then target the drain it shows: lower an unnecessarily bright screen, reduce heavy background activity, or use Low Power Mode. To slow battery-capacity loss over time, avoid excessive heat and use an 80% charge limit only if you have an iPad mini (A17 Pro).
Find what is using power before changing settings
Open Settings > Battery and review the Daily Usage chart along with app and system activity. Battery life—the time the iPad works before it needs recharging—depends on how you use it and which apps are active, so the most useful fix is the one that matches your usage pattern. Apple’s battery-drain guidance explains how to read this information and follow any suggestions shown on your iPad.

- If the display is bright, lower brightness. If Apple suggests Auto-Brightness or Auto-Lock because either is disabled, consider enabling it.
- If an app has substantial background activity, reduce your use of it or its background activity where its settings allow.
- If an app’s notifications frequently wake the screen, review that app’s notification settings.
After an iPadOS update or initial setup, battery use may be temporarily higher while background work finishes. Check Battery for an update or setup insight and look again after a few days.
Extend the charge you have now
Use Low Power Mode when runtime matters more than speed
Go to Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode, or add Low Power Mode to Control Center for quicker access. Apple says it reduces power use, but some tasks may run more slowly. It switches off automatically when the iPad charges to 80% or higher. This is an immediate runtime measure, not a battery-health repair.

Choose a better network connection
Use Wi-Fi when it is available and the signal is strong; Apple says Wi-Fi uses less battery than mobile networks, while weak coverage increases energy use. If you will be somewhere without coverage for a while, Airplane Mode can help. You do not need to routinely turn off Wi-Fi and Bluetooth as a universal fix: Apple says they use minimal power when they are not connected.
Use a portable charger only when you need power away from an outlet
A USB-C power bank can recharge compatible iPad minis while travelling, but it does not make the iPad more efficient or restore worn capacity. Check your iPad’s connector before buying: Apple identifies the iPad mini (A17 Pro) and iPad mini (6th generation) as USB-C models. A power bank is an optional convenience, not a substitute for diagnosing unexpected drain.

Protect battery capacity over the long term
Keep the iPad away from excessive heat
Apple’s ideal ambient operating range is 16°C to 22°C (62°F to 72°F). Avoid using or charging an iPad above 35°C (95°F); Apple warns that this can permanently reduce battery lifespan. Cold conditions may shorten runtime temporarily, with performance returning as the battery warms to its normal operating range. See Apple’s charging and battery-maintenance guidance.
Use the 80% charge limit only on the supported mini
On iPad mini (A17 Pro), the charge limit is at Settings > Battery > Battery Health. Apple says limiting time spent fully charged can reduce battery wear. This setting is for preserving capacity over time; it does not increase the runtime available from the charge currently in the iPad. Do not assume the option is available on other mini generations. Apple documents the feature and supported models in its battery-maintenance information.

Understand charging and battery aging
Apple says iPad batteries are designed to retain 80% of original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles, depending on regular use and charging. That is a manufacturer design statement, not a guarantee for every battery. Overnight charging is safe; when convenient, unplugging after a full charge reduces the time spent fully charged.

On supported models, open Settings > Battery > Battery Health to see capacity and related details. If Battery Health is not available, Apple says the model does not support that feature. If the screen displays Service, Apple recommends considering service to restore full performance and capacity. Consult Apple’s iPad battery and performance guidance if the indicator appears or abnormal runtime persists.

Apple’s current iPad mini specification lists up to 10 hours of Wi-Fi web surfing or video playback and up to 9 hours of cellular-data web surfing. Those are Apple’s specified test-use categories, not a prediction of typical runtime or of how many hours a particular setting will add. No individual setting has a guaranteed battery-savings figure.
