To make a Pixel last longer today, find what is using the charge, reduce screen and background activity, and turn on Battery Saver when you need to stretch a low battery. To slow battery aging over time, use charging optimization and keep the phone cool. Menu names can vary by Pixel model and Android version; if a path differs, search for the setting in Settings.
Find what is draining the battery
Start with the usage breakdown rather than changing every setting at once. Open Settings → Battery → Battery usage and review the apps and systems using power. Look for apps with substantial background activity, then check each app’s background-use setting. Google recommends leaving battery optimization set to Optimized for ordinary use where that option is available; allowing more background activity can use more battery. Google’s battery-saving guidance explains how to review app usage and optimization.

Adjust settings for more runtime today
Reduce screen power use
- Swipe down from the top of the screen and move the brightness slider lower.
- Consider enabling Dark theme.
- If you use a live wallpaper, switch to a static one.
Limit background activity and unused connections
Keep Adaptive Battery enabled. Google says it learns from your usage and can limit less-used apps in the background. Find it at Settings → Battery → Battery Saver → Adaptive Battery on the documented settings path; use Settings search if your menus differ. After a new setup or factory reset, Google says Adaptive Battery can take a few weeks to take effect. Its limits may reduce performance or delay notifications for some apps. Turn off hotspot or tethering when you are finished using it. If an app’s background activity is unusually high, adjust that app’s background-use setting, bearing in mind that limiting it can affect how promptly it syncs or notifies you.
Use Battery Saver when charge is low
Turn on Battery Saver when you need the remaining charge to last until you can recharge. It can restrict activity and convenience, so use it when the extra runtime matters. Also reduce screen-on time and avoid sustained high-drain activities such as navigation, video, gaming, GPS use, streaming, hotspot use, and heavy camera use. Google’s Battery Saver guidance covers ways to stretch a low charge.

Choose a charging setting for long-term battery health
Charging optimization is about reducing battery aging, not increasing the charge available for today. Open Settings → Battery → Battery health → Charging optimization if those labels appear on your phone. Google documents two options: Adaptive Charging and an 80% limit. Google’s charging optimization instructions explain availability and setup.

The 80% limit is optional: turn it off when you need a full charge for a particular day. There is no need to drain the battery from full to empty to “train” it.

Keep the Pixel cool
Heat can increase battery drain and damage the battery. Google warns that a battery drains much faster when the phone is hot, even when it is not in use. Avoid leaving the Pixel in hot conditions. Google’s battery guidance includes advice on heat and battery care.
Investigate drain that does not improve
After an Android update
A modest increase in battery use for a few days after a software update can be normal while the phone adjusts. If the drain persists beyond that, review Battery usage for apps or systems that are using more power than expected.

Run Battery diagnostics on supported models
On Pixel 6 and later, open Settings → Battery → Battery diagnostics → Battery draining too quickly, if that option is available. Follow the diagnostic guidance and review the usage breakdown before making broader changes. Google’s Pixel battery troubleshooting instructions cover post-update drain and diagnostics.
When you need to recharge away from an outlet
A USB-C power bank can provide an optional way to recharge while travelling or away from a wall outlet. It does not increase the Pixel’s battery capacity or repair battery health. Google documents USB-C charging and Battery Saver, but does not endorse a particular power bank. Google’s USB-C charging guidance explains charging basics.
