You can reduce who sees your Facebook profile details and posts by reviewing audience, discovery, and tagging controls. Instagram has a separate set of controls; do not assume Facebook settings apply there. Neither platform’s privacy settings make an account invisible, and login security is a separate concern.
Make Facebook posts and profile details less visible
Facebook groups many privacy controls under Settings & privacy > Settings > Audience and visibility. Open the profile menu to get to Settings & privacy. The exact options can vary by device, region, and profile type. Meta also offers Privacy Checkup as a guided review. See Meta’s overview of Facebook privacy settings.

- Posts: Review the default audience for future posts, then check the audience on content you have already shared. Changing a default does not automatically make older posts private.
- Stories and reels: Review their audiences separately; do not assume a post setting controls every format.
- Profile and tagging: Inspect who can see posts you are tagged in and how tagged content is handled on your profile.
- Followers and public content: Review which content and interactions are available beyond your friends.
- Blocking: Use blocking for specific accounts you do not want to interact with or see your profile, subject to Facebook’s controls.
Understand tagged posts before changing the setting
A tagged post’s visibility can depend on both the audience the original poster chose and the audience settings you select in Profile and tagging. The option to add people to the audience when you are tagged can broaden who sees that post. Review the explanation in Facebook’s guide to who can see a post you’re tagged in before choosing a tag default.

Limit how people find you and view your friends
In Audience and visibility, open How people find and contact you. Review who can send friend requests and who can see the Friends section on your profile. Facebook says that section is public by default; you can choose a narrower audience in the Friends-section settings.
That choice only controls what your profile displays. It cannot override what your friends reveal on their own profiles, and mutual friends may still be visible.

Know what Facebook privacy settings cannot hide
Facebook says your current profile photo and cover photo are public. Treat them as visible to people beyond your chosen post audience.

Set Instagram privacy in Instagram’s own controls
Instagram settings are distinct from Facebook’s, and the available official information here does not establish a complete, current walkthrough for account privacy, audience, mentions, tags, or discoverability. Open Instagram’s current in-app settings and review those controls directly; do not follow Facebook menu paths as if they were identical.

Protect account access separately from profile privacy
Two-factor authentication and login alerts help protect access to your account. They do not change who can see profile details, posts, or tagged content. Facebook places security-key registration at Accounts Center > Password and security > Two-factor authentication. Meta’s account security guidance covers security features.

A compatible U2F/FIDO2 security key is an optional physical second factor. Depending on the key and device, it may connect through USB, NFC, Bluetooth, or a device-specific connector; check compatibility with your device and browser before buying. An authenticator app or another supported method may suit you better if you prefer not to carry a physical key. A security key protects the login step, not profile visibility.
