Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo extend a color e-reader’s battery life, lower the front-light brightness, turn off Wi-Fi when you do not need it, and use sleep or shutdown during idle periods. The exact controls vary by model, but these are the settings to check first; a new charging cable can fix charging trouble, not increase runtime between charges.
Why is your color e-reader battery draining quickly?
Battery use depends on how often you read and which features are active, so a single runtime figure cannot predict how long every color e-reader will last. Rakuten Kobo’s general charging guidance says its eReaders can last “up to two months depending on how frequently you use your eReader”; that is a broad manufacturer estimate, not a color-model-specific test or a guaranteed result. Kobo’s US product page describes its eReaders as having “weeks of battery life” without specifying a controlled usage protocol. Kobo charging guidance · Kobo US eReader page

Start with the light and wireless connection, then check what the device does while idle. Menu names and behavior differ by brand, model, and software version, so use your e-reader’s own settings or manufacturer instructions rather than assuming a universal path.
How to extend battery life
1. Lower the front-light brightness
Set the built-in light to the lowest level that is comfortable in your reading environment. On Kobo readers, you can adjust ComfortLight from the reading view by swiping along the left edge, or use the brightness menu; the available gesture and menu can vary by device. Kobo’s instructions explain how to adjust the light but do not identify a universally optimal brightness percentage. Kobo brightness instructions

ComfortLight PRO is described as an eye-comfort feature. The cited instructions do not establish that changing the warm-light or color-temperature setting independently saves battery, so focus on reducing brightness rather than treating warmth as a power-saving control.
2. Turn off Wi-Fi between syncs and downloads
If your books are already on the device and you do not need to sync, download a book, or visit the store, switch off Wi-Fi and reconnect when you need it. Kobo explicitly says, “This will extend your eReader’s battery life.” Its help article also says the connection turns off after five minutes of inactivity; that behavior is Kobo guidance, not a rule for every brand or firmware. Kobo Wi-Fi instructions
3. Choose sleep or shutdown for idle time
Use sleep for a short break when you want to return to the same reading screen. Shutdown may suit a longer period when the reader will not be used: on Kobo, waking from sleep returns to the previous screen, while restarting after shutdown returns to Home. Kobo says both options help battery life, but does not quantify a runtime difference between them. Kobo power instructions

4. Set an automatic idle action if your model offers one
Kobo includes making the eReader turn itself off sooner among its battery-life suggestions. Check your model’s display, power, or energy settings for an auto-sleep or inactivity-shutdown option; there is no single menu path that applies to all readers. Kobo charging guidance
Does a color cover or charging cable affect runtime?
The sleep-screen cover is not the cause
Kobo identifies the Libra Colour and Clara Colour as color-screen models. It says color appears on pages designed with color rather than being added to black-and-white page content, and that showing a book cover in color while the device is asleep or off does not affect battery life. A color cover image, by itself, is therefore not an explanation for unusually fast drain on those Kobo models. Kobo color eReader information
A cable can address charging, not how long a full charge lasts
If the battery is not charging reliably, Kobo recommends using the supplied cable where possible. A replacement USB cable should support data transfer, and Kobo gives a standard 10 W, 5 V adapter as troubleshooting guidance. The company cautions that high-wattage fast-charging adapters may affect charging performance or battery life. Check connector and model compatibility before replacing a cable. These steps address the charging setup; they do not increase reading time from a full battery. Kobo charging guidance

If the issue is that the device will not charge properly, check the cable and adapter against the manufacturer’s charging guidance rather than expecting them to improve runtime.
For a non-Kobo reader, look for equivalent brightness, wireless, and idle-power controls in that model’s manual. Recommendations and automatic behaviors documented for Kobo should not be assumed to apply to Kindle, BOOX, or another brand.
