Start by checking for damage, ask your landlord before changing hardware, and preserve an exit that opens from inside without a key.
Inspect the door and frame before adding hardware
Check the door, frame, hinges, deadbolt, and strike area for looseness, cracks, warping, or other damage. Operate the deadbolt and confirm that its bolt extends and retracts cleanly into the strike opening. A lock can be sound while the surrounding door or frame is weak; Seattle Police emphasizes that the strike plate and frame should be anchored to the home’s main construction in its home-security guidance.

If the door or frame is damaged or loose, report the problem to the landlord rather than relying on added hardware to compensate for a weak assembly. A reinforcement plate cannot repair a cracked frame or a badly fitting door.
Ask the landlord before modifying the entry
Get approval before drilling into or replacing the door, frame, hinges, strike plate, or lock. Lease terms and local rules differ, and some security-device requirements also place duties on landlords. Texas law, for example, addresses installation requirements for certain residential security devices and landlord responsibilities when devices are inoperable; it does not establish a universal rule for tenants everywhere. When you contact the landlord, describe what you found and ask whether they will inspect or approve a compatible reinforcement. If the door or frame needs repair, ask for that repair first.
Reinforce the strike area only with an approved, compatible fit
The strike plate is the metal fitting on the frame that receives the deadbolt. If the landlord approves and the existing door and frame can accept it, a heavy-duty strike plate fastened securely to the framing can strengthen this part of the assembly. Seattle Police recommends a deadbolt with at least a one-inch throw for exterior doors and discusses a four-screw heavy-duty strike plate with 3–4 inch screws in its door-security bulletin. These are general recommendations, not universal code requirements or a guarantee against forced entry.

Do not assume that a particular plate or screw length will suit every apartment door. The right hardware and fasteners depend on the door, frame, existing lock, and what lies behind the frame. Have the landlord or a qualified installer confirm compatibility rather than drilling on the basis of a generic product listing.

Keep a quick, key-free exit from inside
Any security improvement must leave residents able to get out promptly in an emergency. Portland’s code says applicable dwelling doors must open from inside without a key or special knowledge or effort; requirements vary by jurisdiction. See the Portland City Code, Chapter 24.85. New York City housing guidance says double-cylinder locks on apartment doors that can trap residents during a fire are illegal; consult the NYC tenant rights and responsibilities guidance.

Do not install a lock or add-on device that requires a key to leave or makes the exit difficult to operate. Seattle Police puts the trade-off plainly: “Security improvements should not be made at the expense of fire safety.” Its home-security guidance is practical advice, not a substitute for the rules that apply where you live.

- Door or frame repair: Address visible damage or looseness through the landlord before considering an added plate.
- Strike-plate reinforcement: Consider a heavy-duty plate only if it fits the existing assembly, is securely fastened as appropriate, and the landlord approves the work.
- Lock changes: Confirm the lock is compatible and that it allows immediate exit from inside without a key.
- Any other device: Check lease terms and local building or fire requirements before installing it; a product’s general security claims do not establish legality or compatibility.
Official guidance supports these as sensible checks, but it does not quantify how much a particular upgrade reduces burglary risk or establish that one product is best for every apartment.
