You can give an Android phone a more cohesive look with its wallpaper, system colors, app layout, and a few useful widgets—without adding extra apps or making everyday tasks harder. Start with one visual direction, then adjust the built-in home-screen controls your phone provides. The exact options vary by manufacturer and Android version; the steps below are specifically for Pixel phones where noted.
Start with one wallpaper and a visual direction
Choose a direction before moving icons around: for example, muted, colorful, dark, or minimal. Then pick a wallpaper that supports it. A single strong background gives you a reference for choosing icon placement, widget styles, and colors.

On Android implementations that support Material You dynamic color, colors drawn from the wallpaper can inform parts of the system palette. The Android Open Source Project describes wallpaper color extraction as part of Material You, while Google’s examples show how the feature appears on Pixel. That does not mean every phone offers the same controls or that every app adopts the palette. After setting a wallpaper, look for a wallpaper-and-style or color option in your phone’s settings. If a palette selector is available, try it and check the home screen and system interface rather than assuming it changes every app.

Clear the home screen before adding anything
Keep the home screen for apps and shortcuts you reach often. Remove items that do not help your routine, and group related apps when that makes them easier to find. Leaving some open space also lets the wallpaper show through and prevents widgets and icons from competing for attention.
On Pixel phones, Google documents arranging apps and shortcuts with long-press and drag controls, as well as creating folders. Some instructions on its support page apply only to Android 14 and later; other manufacturers may use different gestures or labels. Choose widgets for what you need to see or do
A widget can show app information or provide access to app functions without opening the app first. Android’s developer documentation groups widget uses into information, collection, control, and hybrid types. Choose widgets for specific tasks—such as checking information at a glance or using a control—and keep the selection small enough that the screen stays readable. On Pixel, add a widget by touching and holding an empty area of the home screen, opening Widgets, and dragging an eligible widget onto the screen. If its app supports resizing, touch and hold the widget and adjust its handles. Widget availability and resizing depend on the app and device.

Adjust icon size and layout
Once the wallpaper, shortcuts, and widgets are in place, adjust the layout so the screen feels balanced and remains easy to use. On Pixel phones, open Wallpaper & style → Layout and select an icon size. Available controls can depend on the Android version; Google notes that some of its home-screen steps require Android 14 or later. On another Android phone, look in the manufacturer’s wallpaper, home-screen, or display settings for equivalent controls rather than assuming the Pixel path applies.

Look at the screen as you would when reaching for an app, not only as a static design. Confirm that frequently used apps are easy to reach, widget text and icons are legible, and important information is not crowded by decorative choices. If the screen feels busy, remove a widget or shortcut before adding more customization.

The core makeover is software-led: wallpaper, color options, widgets, and layout are the controls documented in the official Android and Pixel guidance. Physical accessories change the phone’s exterior, not these interface settings. For app appearance specifically, Android’s Material Design documentation addresses how developers style apps; it is not evidence that a user can apply a particular launcher theme or icon pack.
