You can make Windows 11 feel more familiar by moving the taskbar icons to the left, simplifying Start and taskbar contents, and changing the desktop’s colors and theme. Those built-in settings do not restore the Windows 7 shell. If you specifically want a classic Start menu, Open-Shell is an optional third-party route, but check its current documentation for your Windows build before installing it.
Move Start and the taskbar icons to the left
- Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors and set Taskbar alignment to the left option, if it is available in your Windows 11 build.
This changes where the taskbar icons sit; it does not turn the taskbar into the Windows 7 taskbar. See Microsoft’s Windows Start menu customization guide for the documented alignment control.

Make Start and the taskbar less cluttered
Curate the Start menu
In Settings > Personalization > Start, remove pins you do not use, arrange related apps into folders, and choose a Start layout that suits how you work. Where the option is available, add shortcuts such as Documents or Downloads beside the power button. These changes organize Windows 11’s Start menu; they do not replace it with the Windows 7 menu. See Microsoft’s Start menu instructions.
Hide taskbar buttons you do not need
Open Settings > Personalization > Taskbar to manage taskbar items and turn off buttons you rarely use, such as Task View. Pin frequently used applications so they are easy to reach. The available controls are described in Microsoft’s taskbar customization guide.

Change the desktop’s colors and theme
Choose colors and accent effects
Go to Settings > Personalization > Colors. Choose Light, Dark, or Custom mode, select an accent color, and decide whether to show the accent on Start and the taskbar or on title bars and window borders. You can also adjust transparency effects. Some apps use their own appearance settings, and not every app supports dark mode. Details are in Microsoft’s color personalization guide.
Customize or save a theme
Open Settings > Personalization > Themes to change the background, color, sounds, and mouse cursor. You can save your combination as a theme for later use. A theme changes the desktop’s presentation, not the underlying Windows shell. See Microsoft’s guide to Windows themes.
Use Open-Shell if you specifically want a classic Start menu
Open-Shell is a third-party customization option rather than a Windows setting. In its guide to the utility, Windows Central describes a “Windows 7 style” Start menu, an optional replacement Start button, a Windows Aero skin, and a classic Explorer bar. These are specific menu and Explorer customizations, not evidence of a complete Windows 7 recreation. Follow the setup guidance in Windows Central’s Open-Shell guide.
Before installing any utility that changes shell behavior, review its current project documentation and compatibility information for your Windows build. Open-Shell’s guide is not a guarantee that every feature will work on every current build, and third-party software may require maintenance as Windows changes. The Open-Shell guidance above is attributed to Windows Central, not presented as hands-on testing.
How much can you change?
| Approach | What it can change | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Windows personalization settings | Left alignment where available, Start pins and shortcuts, selected taskbar buttons, colors, transparency, background, sounds, and cursor. Microsoft’s guides: Start, taskbar, colors, and themes. | A replacement Windows 7 shell or Start menu. |
| Open-Shell | Windows Central’s guide describes a Windows 7-style Start menu, optional Start button, Aero skin, and classic Explorer bar. Read the guide. | A complete Windows 7 recreation or guaranteed compatibility with every Windows 11 build. |
Other third-party utilities worth investigating include ExplorerPatcher, StartAllBack, and Start11. Their inclusion here is not a compatibility ranking: check each project’s current support information for your Windows build before choosing one.

The cited Open-Shell guide describes a classic Explorer bar, but the available documentation here does not establish a full Windows 7 File Explorer recreation. Treat that feature as a specific customization, not a promise that Explorer will match the older operating system throughout.
