In your first month, measure three things: financial health (cash, revenue and expenses), acquisition (where visitors or leads come from), and customer outcomes (orders, qualified leads or bookings). First make sure your main business action is trackable; then review results weekly and choose one or two next steps. Early data is directional evidence, not proof of what will work long term.
Decide what counts as a result
Choose one main outcome for the month before you start interpreting dashboards. For an online store, that might be a completed paid order. For a service business, it could be a qualified lead or a booked consultation. Define the outcome in operational terms: for example, what information or level of intent makes a lead “qualified.”

Also write down who you are trying to reach and which acquisition channels you plan to use, such as search, paid campaigns, referrals, email or social. Check that the relevant checkout, form, booking flow or other key action can be recorded. A spreadsheet or bookkeeping system you already use is enough to begin if you update it consistently. Record money movement separately from business performance: cash available and when money enters or leaves are not the same as booked sales or profit. The U.S. Small Business Administration explains cash and accrual accounting and recommends keeping records of income, expenses and other relevant assets and liabilities. Its bookkeeping guidance says those records can help track capital and project cash flow: SBA: Manage your finances.

- Customer outcomes: Orders or qualified leads, plus refunds, cancellations or missed bookings where relevant.
- Operational issues: Note problems that can affect results, such as a broken form, delayed fulfillment or unavailable inventory.
Use a consistent accounting basis and check the record-keeping and tax rules that apply where your business operates. General guidance cannot determine the right accounting treatment for a particular business or jurisdiction.
Separate acquisition from what happens after the visit
For organic Google Search, Search Console reports impressions, clicks and queries: what happened in search results before a visitor arrived. Google Analytics reports activity after people arrive and can help identify traffic sources. They answer different questions, so use each for its own domain rather than expecting their totals to match. In a weekly review, look at which sources brought visitors or leads and what outcomes followed. Include only channels your tracking can identify reliably. Search impressions and clicks indicate visibility and visits from search, not whether those visits produced sales. Analytics engagement and returning-user measures can help diagnose behavior, but they are not substitutes for orders or leads.

- Cash position and cash flow: What is available, and how quickly are receipts and payments occurring?
- Revenue and expenses: What came in from sales, and what did the business spend?
- Orders or qualified leads: Did the intended customer action happen?
- Acquisition by source: Which identifiable channels brought visits or outcomes?
- Search visibility: What queries produced Google Search impressions and clicks?
- Conversion rate: A derived measure such as orders divided by eligible website sessions, provided you define the numerator and denominator consistently.
- Engagement or return behavior: Diagnostic context for how visitors behave, not a standalone success measure.
Be careful when calculating rates: do not mix user-, session- and event-based figures as if they shared the same denominator. Google Analytics uses different scopes for acquisition dimensions and reporting: Analytics traffic-source dimensions.
Review once a week, then act on the clearest signal
- Check the records: Update cash, revenue, expenses, orders or qualified leads, and relevant refunds or cancellations.
- Check whether tracking is working: Confirm that the main action is being recorded and that the source information you need is present.
- Compare channels or offers consistently: Consider cost, number and quality of outcomes, downstream revenue or margin if known, time to result and confidence in the tracking.
- Identify the largest observed bottleneck: For example, few relevant visitors, visits that do not reach the key action, or leads that do not become customers.
- Choose one or two next actions: Make a small change or test that addresses the bottleneck, and note what result would support continuing it.
The SBA recommends comparing marketing costs with generated revenue, measuring return on investment and updating the marketing plan. In a new business, treat that comparison as directional: a handful of conversions and uncertain attribution do not establish that a channel caused the outcome. Set expectations from your own business, not a borrowed benchmark
There is no universal first-month target for traffic, conversion rate or organic-search share established by these sources. Results depend on the offer, target customer, market, location, competition, pricing and sales process. The SBA recommends researching demand, market size, competition, location and pricing when assessing a market: SBA: Market research and competitive analysis.
Use the first month to establish a dependable baseline and learn where the clearest constraint appears. A rise in visits is not automatically evidence of demand; revenue is not profit; and engagement is not a business outcome. Keep comparisons consistent and let the quality of the evidence determine how confidently you act.
