Make directory thumbnails from work each designer is authorized to display, set a consistent card crop before preparing images, and create responsive image sizes based on the directory’s actual desktop and mobile layouts. There is no universal thumbnail pixel size: the right dimensions depend on rendered card width, aspect ratio, breakpoints, and display density.
1. Choose a representative image you have permission to use
Start with a screenshot or project image that reflects the designer’s actual work. Ask the designer to confirm they have the right to display it in your directory, and keep a record of that permission. Avoid stock imagery that could lead visitors to believe it is part of the designer’s portfolio.

Choose an image with a clear focal point that remains recognizable when reduced to a listing-card size. For interface work, that might be the key screen or a distinctive interface detail; for other work, select a frame that communicates the project at a glance.

Decide how images will fit the directory cards, including their aspect ratio and cropping behavior. Apply the same ratio and visual treatment across the listing so neighboring cards feel consistent, while positioning each image to preserve its own recognizable subject. Do not assume a platform-wide standard: the appropriate crop follows your directory’s design.
#1 Best Overall
Compare candidate crops at the size visitors will actually see. Check whether the project’s key subject or interface remains visible, whether the image reads clearly on mobile as well as desktop, and whether the crop looks coherent beside other directory entries. A crop that looks good at full size may hide important details in a small card.
3. Generate image candidates for the real layout
Inspect the card’s rendered width at each breakpoint and account for the pixel density of target displays. Prepare image candidates for those display needs, rather than sending a large desktop asset to every visitor. Responsive image markup lets the browser choose among candidates using the layout width and device conditions. Google’s responsive image guidance covers the use of srcset and sizes.
For example, if a card is about 280 CSS pixels wide on one layout and 420 CSS pixels wide on another, the candidate set should be based on those measured widths and the pixel densities you intend to support. Those figures are examples of how to reason from your own layout, not universal export recommendations.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThere is no evidence-based universal file-size target or format for this directory without knowing its hosting setup and rendered dimensions. Choose an image format and quality that keep the visual details you need while avoiding unnecessary bytes, then test it in the actual listing.
4. Add responsive markup and reserve layout space
Provide intrinsic width and height attributes, or a CSS aspect-ratio that matches the card. This lets the browser reserve space before the image loads and helps prevent cards from jumping as content appears. Use lazy loading for cards below the fold; do not lazy-load a prominent image that appears immediately when the page opens. See web.dev’s guidance on optimizing layout shifts.

loading="lazy"

Replace the example paths, dimensions, and sizes conditions with values that match your image candidates and card layout. The width and height values describe the image’s intrinsic dimensions; CSS can still control the rendered crop and size.
For the first prominent card image, omit loading="lazy" so it can load eagerly. Write concise alternative text that describes what the image shows; if the surrounding card already gives the same information and the image adds no distinct content, use empty alternative text (alt="").

5. Respect image-service rules when using Unsplash
If you use the Unsplash API, use the hotlinked image URL returned by the API, and include attribution to Unsplash and the photographer with a link to the photographer’s profile. Unsplash’s API documentation describes image transformations such as width, height, crop, format, quality, fit, and device pixel ratio. Its 200-pixel thumb and 400-pixel small variants are examples of that service’s options, not recommended dimensions for every directory. The documentation also cautions that the full variant can load slowly and is not recommended for performance.
The five-megapixel minimum in the Unsplash contributor guidelines applies to images submitted to Unsplash, not to thumbnails displayed on your website.
6. Check the listing before publishing
- Confirm the image represents the designer’s work and that display permission is in place.
- Review each crop at the actual card size on mobile and desktop, not just in an image editor.
- Check that responsive candidates correspond to the layout widths and densities you intend to support.
- Verify that space is reserved before images load and that only below-the-fold cards are lazy-loaded.
- For Unsplash API images, confirm hotlinking and photographer attribution are present.
Or skip the browser setup
If you need to capture a designer’s live portfolio page as a starting image, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot through one GET request. This example requests a WebP capture of the portfolio URL; see the API documentation for request options and response behavior.

Replace the example target URL with the portfolio page you are authorized to capture. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie/consent banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and response headers indicate the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server provides take_screenshot, get_page_info, and capture_pdf tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.

Common problems and fixes
The thumbnail looks blurry
Check whether the browser selected a candidate large enough for the card’s rendered width and display density. Inspect the srcset, sizes, and actual image URL chosen by the browser; do not solve every blur issue by sending the largest file to every layout.
The subject is cut off
Revisit the crop and focal point at the rendered card size. If one crop position does not work across layouts, adjust image positioning for the affected breakpoint while keeping the card’s overall aspect ratio consistent.
The listing jumps as images load
Add matching intrinsic dimensions or an aspect ratio to the image container so the browser knows how much space to reserve before loading.
Recommended Free Tools
Mobile visitors receive oversized images
Ensure that sizes reflects the card width at each breakpoint and that srcset includes suitable candidates. Test with the actual responsive layout rather than relying on a desktop-only preview.
An Unsplash image or attribution is missing
For API use, confirm the image is served from the returned hotlinked URL and that the page credits Unsplash and the photographer with a profile link, as required by the Unsplash API documentation.
