Playwright is a flexible do-it-yourself option: read and validate the URLs, capture each page, and save a matching filename. For repeated or larger batches, a screenshot API can take some browser setup off your hands.
Choose a consistent thumbnail profile
A webpage thumbnail is a browser-rendered screenshot, not a page preview generated from its URL alone. Decide what you want the images to show before capturing them: a standard viewport is usually easier to compare in a directory, while a full-page capture includes content below the fold. That distinction is based on the available capture modes, not on testing these particular sites.

- Viewport: Set one width and height for every page. Use a desktop profile for a directory intended for desktop viewing, or a mobile profile if the directory is meant to represent phone layouts.
- Format: Choose one image format and use it throughout the batch. The Playwright examples below save PNG files; other tools may offer additional formats.
- Wait strategy: Use the same navigation wait condition and, if needed, the same short delay for every URL. Dynamic pages can render differently, so inspect a sample rather than assuming navigation completion means every visual element has appeared.
- Names: Keep each original URL associated with its output filename, for example in a CSV or JSON manifest. This makes it possible to identify redirects, failures and images later.

Generate thumbnails locally with Playwright
The example below uses Node.js and Playwright. It reads one URL per line from urls.txt, creates a thumbnails directory, and saves a viewport PNG for each URL. It also records per-URL errors in the terminal and continues to the next site.

1. Install Playwright
- Install a current Node.js release suitable for your environment.
- In a new project directory, run
npm init -y. - Install Playwright with
npm install playwright, then install its browser withnpx playwright install chromium.
2. Prepare the URL list
Create urls.txt with one complete URL per line. Include the scheme, such as https://example.in. Blank lines and lines beginning with # are ignored. The script does not establish whether a site permits automated capture or reuse of its images; check the applicable site terms and rules for your intended use.
3. Save and run the capture script

The script uses a 1280 × 800 viewport, waits for the DOM content to load and then waits 1.5 seconds before taking a screenshot. Those are example settings, not tested optimal values for coaching institute sites. Increase the delay or use a different wait condition only if review shows the pages need it.

Viewport versus full page
To capture the entire scrollable page instead, change the screenshot call to await page.screenshot({ path: path.join(outputDir, file), type: 'png', fullPage: true });. A long page may produce an image that is too tall for a compact thumbnail grid. Playwright also supports capturing a specific element; consult its documentation for the relevant API and adjust the script if every site shares a suitable selector. A selector that is not present on a site will need error handling.
Review failures and keep the batch reliable
The script records an outcome for each valid URL, but it does not guarantee a useful screenshot for every site. A page may redirect, display an error, take longer than the timeout, or need more time for images and other dynamic content. No specific coaching institute website was tested for this article.

- Open a sample of the saved PNGs at their intended display size; confirm the page is visible and the framing is useful.
- Check
thumbnail-results.jsonfor the final URL, HTTP status where available, and any navigation or screenshot error. - Retry only the failed or visibly incomplete pages with a longer timeout or adjusted wait strategy, rather than slowing every capture unnecessarily.
- Keep the manifest alongside the images so duplicate hostnames, redirects and failed captures can be traced to their original input URLs.

When a hosted batch service is worth considering
Hosted tools can reduce the work of managing browser infrastructure and may offer queued processing. AddScreenshots describes asynchronous bulk processing for URL lists in its API documentation. Site-Shot advertises desktop, tablet and mobile captures and country options at its service page; check current availability and plan terms before relying on those options. Capture 815 describes bulk website screenshots and an API at its service page. These are provider descriptions, not independent performance tests, and the available batch size, per-URL error reporting, storage and retries should be confirmed with each provider before adoption.

Practical checks before publishing the thumbnails
- Confirm your output dimensions and format fit the directory, report or application where images will appear.
- Review licensing, site terms and applicable jurisdiction for both automated capture and the planned use of screenshots.
- For a hosted service, check current request limits, pricing, retention, storage location and API-key handling directly with the provider.
- Do not treat a successful image file as proof that the intended page content loaded; inspect representative outputs and use the recorded final URLs and statuses.
